Inter CEO Antonello: “New Stadium Isn’t Just For Milan But For An Area That Needs Regenerated”

Inter chief executive Alessandro Antonello has spoken further on Inter and AC Milan’s proposed new stadium and the reasoning behind the two clubs wanting to go down this route.

“It is a stadium not only for Milan but for an area that needs to be regenerated. We want to do it together with AC Milan because we have been managing San Siro together for years and we want to do it with a new stadium too,” he said in an interview with Sky Sport 24.

“To compete at a high level in Europe we need a new stadium and new infrastructures that matches the other European clubs. This stadium will serve the two clubs in order to invest and achieve new sporting successes.

“We want to sit at the table with the council and the fans, we are open to talking. Our idea is to stay at San Siro for maintaining the iconic appearance but handing down to the new generations a new stadium that brings new successes.

“The Meazza is iconic for the triumphs connected to it, we hope that the successes can make this new plant become iconic “.

He was then asked about the opinions shared by San Siro district residents at last night’s meeting, which he attended.

“Yesterday was a long and interesting meeting. It was almost a condominium meeting as part of a civil discussion. We took many ideas from it. We presented the project on July 10th, then we started the sharing process in September, we launched the survey through the site that already boasts 35,000 responses.”

He was then asked if he had a particular preference for either of the two plans in the running.

“Today there are two concepts for two completely different stadiums: one is more traditional to Milan and the other, with the two rings, symbolises the two clubs. It is premature to express my thoughts, both have a 50/50 chance and in the future we will clarify new elements to make a correct choice.”

He was then asked if ticket prices will rise due to the reduced capacity of the new stadium.

“Considering the average attendance at San Siro is around 60,000, having a stadium with that capacity means satisfying the average demand. We will not be raising prices but simply satisfying the demand for prices based on the different possibilities.

“At the San Siro there are no corporate seats, and in Milan there are many companies that want to bring business opportunities to the stadium, we want to bring the presence of seats for companies to 12%, in line with the average but this is not at the expense of pricing elsewhere.”

He was then asked if there has been a moment to reflect after Inter’s loss to Juventus.

“We think that the team can now recover energy, after a challenging start to the season with important results. Now let’s sit down for a moment, we will also think about recovering the injured players. Antonio Conte can take advantage of these days to think about the next phase of Serie A and the Champions League which is a goal we care about.”

He concluded by speaking on the importance of planning: “Today, to face the challenges that European football brings, it is necessary to make strategic planning in the medium term and to adjust the sporting results, guaranteeing an increase in resources and investments in the infrastructures that go beyond what the results on the pitch are.”
