Ex-Inter Defender Andrea Mandorlini: “The Nerazzurri Need The Real Diego Godin”

Former Inter defender Andrea Mandorlini spoke exclusively to Italian media outlet FcInterNews yesterday, discussing the Nerazzurri, their coach and their performances so far this season.

“Antonio’s words were very harsh but dictated by the anger following Dortmund’s comeback. An unexpected stumble for the way the game was set, but that does not affect how good the Nerazzurri are doing. In Italy there is always too much haste in judging everything only by the result.”

He discussed whether he thought the current squad could win the league title.

“I’m convinced they can battle with Juventus until the end for the Scudetto. I think the club will do their best to get stronger if they’re in tune with the Bianconeri. If then an important player comes in January.”

The Italian thought that the club should focus on a forward rather than a midfielder in the transfer market.

“Up front there is only Lautaro and Lukaku who are doing very well. They are a fantastic duo, but a great club like the Nerazzurri, at this moment, after the injuries of Sanchez and Politano have only one boy, albeit talented, Esposito. A little ‘little’. ”

He wasn’t sure that veteran defender Diego Godin had settled fully with Inter yet.

“It’s useless to hide the fact that everyone was expected to have a different impact. Playing with 4 at the back is easier than with 3, but Godin hasn’t yet made the most of his skills and potential. Inter need the real Godin. He could have done much better on the second goal in Dortmund and he has a lot of responsibility.”

Mandorlini was impressed with two of Inter’s summer signings, Nicolo Barella and Stefano Sensi.

“Sensi and Barella, they’re doing very well, and it wasn’t easy to jump from a small club to a big club like Inter. They’re exciting and both have great personalities. I confess that I didn’t think they would fit in and impose themselves so quickly in Milan. Today they are two important pieces.”

Finally, Mandorlini revealed when he might return to a coaching role again.

“I hope soon. I think I can give a lot more. You have to know how to wait and I’m waiting for an opportunity. In the meantime, I’m going around Italy to watch the games, so that I’ll be ready as soon as someone needs me.”
