Contrary to reports elsewhere in the media, Naples based newspaper Il Mattino claim that Dries Mertens is not close to signing a contract extension with Napoli.

A number of reports from various other Italian news outlets have suggested that the Belgian national team attacker is set to put pen to paper on a new two year contract with the Azzurri club but Il Mattino state that this is not the case.

They go on to add that due to this situation other clubs are lining up and ready to pounce and get him on a free transfer if he does not sign an extension by the time his current deal expire at the end of June.

Inter are one such club to have shown a keen interest in the 32-year-old who is one goal away from becoming Napoli’s outright all time top goalscorer. Premier League side Chelsea are also believed to be interested.

Napoli president and owner Aurelio De Laurentiis dreams of being able to sign Mauro Icardi according to a report from Naples based newspaper Il Mattino.

The Partenopei have been linked with the Argentine striker in the past and the report claims that contact between the club and his wife and agent Wanda Nara has never truly stopped.

Icardi is facing an uncertain future and his future could well be at the Stadio San Paolo, this report suggests.

The recently turned 27-year-old is currently out on loan at reigning French champions Paris Saint Germain from Inter and PSG have an option to turn his stay into a permanent one for €70 million.

There have however been contrasting reports in the media regarding PSG’s intentions for Icardi and this has led to other clubs such as Juventus keeping an eye on the situation.

Whilst at PSG, former Barcelona academy player Icardi has netted 20 goals and tallied four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.

Legendary Inter striker Julio Cruz has taken to photo sharing social media to reminisce about his time with Inter and also send a message of solidarity with Italy amid the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.

Cruz joined Inter from fellow Serie A side Bologna in the Summer of 2003 and went on to spend six years with the club before moving on to Lazio where he would spend one season before retiring.

During his time at Inter he scored 75 goals and tallied 19 assists in 197 appearances across all competitions.

The Argentine striker, who won six trophies during his time with Inter posted: “Forza Inter and Forza Italy.”

Inter have taken to social media platform Twitter to promote their new digital project ‘Born Inter’, a project which celebrates the clubs history, which was launched to celebrate the club’s 112th birthday little over a week ago.

Born Inter allows fans to find out all that has happened with the club since their birth date from match stats to memorable matches among many other things.

Fans are given an in-depth walk through of their history supporting the club with thanks to famous images and clips being used.

Inter owned youngster Eddie Salcedo has taken to social media platform Instagram to share his belief that Italy will be able to recover from the current Coronavirus pandemic situation.

The entire country has been placed in lock down and Italy has recently overtaken China as the country where the most virus related deaths have occurred but the Italian youth national team player is confident that the nation can recover.

Salcedo, who is currently out on loan at Hellas Verona, posted: “I love Italy and its strength. The smile of the people, the courage of those who always struggle. I love Italy and I know it will rise again soon. We will do it together.”

Inter centre back Diego Godin has taken to photo sharing social media platform Instagram to share some images of himself training from home during the ongoing lock down in Italy.

The Uruguayan defender, who joined the club this past Summer on a free transfer following the expiration of his deal with Atletico Madrid, like his Inter teammates, has been following a personalised training schedule whilst house-bound and has given fans an insight into it.

Mauricio Pochettino has heaped praise upon Inter striker Lautaro Martinez and has went so far as to say that his compatriot is one of the best strikers on the planet at the moment.

Lautaro has exploded this season in his first season as a regular starter at Inter and as a result he now has several clubs reportedly keen on making Summer transfer window swoops for him.

Barcelona appear to have made the 22-year-old forward one of their top targets ahead of the Summer transfer window whilst the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea have also been linked with making moves for him.

This term the former Racing Club player, who joined Inter in the Summer of 2018, has made 31 appearances across all competitions. In just over 2400 minutes on the field, the 17 time Argentine international has scored 16 goals and provided four assists for his teammates.

In an interview with Argentine radio station Radio La Plata late on Thursday night, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino said: “He is among the best strikers in the world not just because of what he is currently showing but for what he can potentially become too.”

A number of Serie A clubs have voiced their displeasure over the possibility of Champions League and Europa League games being played on weekend’s according to a report from Italian news agency ADNKronos.

UEFA and the European Club Association agreed to lift current restrictions which mean the matches could take place at the weekends in a meeting earlier on this week but Serie A clubs are not keen on this idea and want weekend’s to remain for domestic games to be played.

There is a meeting due to take place tomorrow where the issue will be further discussed and the report goes on to claim that several Serie A sides are ready to vote against the idea.

As things stand it is presently unclear as to when the football season will even resume although Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina has recently shared hopes to resume playing from the start of May.
