Vecino: “Now I Have The World Cup & Champions League To Look Forward To”

A surprising goalscorer and game decider, Matias Vecino stopped to talk to Inter TV after the dramatic turn-around in the Champions League qualification decider with Lazio when Inter stole the final spot from Lazio:

“I made a good move before the goal but Andrea Ranocchia tried to steal the goal from me because he went by me. But I still managed to get to the ball first (laughs). Lazio has a great team, but at the end we managed to beat them and get fourth place. Now I have the World Cup and the Champions League to look forward to, some beautiful months are ahead of me. Unfortunately during this last period, I had some trouble with a groin injury that almost destroyed me. I needed to come back for this final in order to help the team and now I am ready to participate in the World Cup and to do well in it.”

D’Ambrosio: “We Did What We Needed To Achiever Our Goal”

Inter defender Danilo D’Ambrosio discussed qualifying for next season’s Champions League with Inter TV after the dramatic 3-2 win over Lazio.

“We all wanted to go to the Champions League and by fighting both tooth and nail we did what we needed in order to achieve our goal. I have struggled to get here with my team mates, the group is fantastic. There were moments of difficulty but we wanted to overcome them. The coach from the beginning told us that the only goal was to get to the Champions League and he directed us.”

D’Ambrosio, who scored Inter’s first goal at the Stadio Olimpico, then spoke on the season as a whole.

“How would I describe this season? Magnificent. We have been great. At the beginning of the championship we all believed in getting to the Champions League. I hope that many of us remain for next season as there is an excellent basis from which to start again.”

The Italian concluded the interview by briefly speaking on Luciano Spalletti.

“At the end of the match the coach was very happy for us, for the fans and for the club. He was proud of what we did.”

Handanovic: “We Made Up For Every Lost Opportunity By Winning Tonight”

After the final whistle of this season’s most important game (probably the most important game for years), Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic talked to Inter TV in order to summarise and give his opinions on what happened at the Studio Olimpico in Rome.

“Finally, we made it [Champions League qualification] happen. This season was a tough one, but now we are only enjoying this moment. We could not have finished better than we did tonight. When it comes down to games like this one, you do not expect to have a quiet night. It was an open game, where both teams wanted to win. But at the end we managed to pull through, during this season there have been some games where we should have won, but tonight we made up for every lost opportunity. I am very happy although I am having some trouble showing it. Tonight there will the possibility to celebrate.”

Vecino: “Being In The Champions League Will Motivate Us Even More”

Inter match winner Matias Vecino spoke to Premium Sport after sending Inter to the Champions League.

Your first year and immediately in the Champions League?

“Yes, that was our main objective from the start. The goal was really important because there was not a lot of time left and the game was starting to slip out of our hands. But at the end we reached this important finish line that was so important for us. Inter is a team that needs to be in the Champions League.”

Was this the most important goal in your career?

“Yes, also from the fact that I have not scored that many goals.”

Maybe you always need to play in Rome, since you always score here?

“That is true, I also scored here while playing for Fiorentina.”

Now you have both the Champions League and the Scudetto to fight for, will anything change?

“This is a positive thing, everybody wants to play in the Champions League. This will boost our motivation even more, then whoever plays in the Champions League gets the first or the second spot in the league.”

What does Inter mean to you?

“I am really impressed of the fact how many people there is that follow this team. Then I also found a club with many dimensions. The first part of the season I think I did well, then my groin injury made things difficult. But I gave everything I had in order to return helping out the team.”

Are you ready for the World Cup?

“Yes, on Tuesday we will start the preparations.”

Icardi: “We Reached Our Goal. The De Vrij Penalty? Destiny”

Inter Captain Mauro Icardi spoke to Premium Sport after the thrilling game against Lazio that saw Inter qualify for the Champions League in dramatic fashion.

Another tough game when Inter suffered, it almost seemed like you could not put Lazio under any pressure?

“That is true, they played really well but we had the force to turn this game around. And tonight we managed to.”

Do Inter deserve to be in the UCL?

“This was the finish line, the team was in a good shape and we are happy what we did today. Today was not one of our best games, but we had the strength and mentality to turn it around.”

Is it all thanks to Spalletti?

“Yes, he deserves a lot of credit. Then I would like to dedicate this win to my teammates, because all of us believed in this objective, all the way from the players to the physiotherapists. This is a huge award for us, we have worked hard and deserved this.”

De Vrij, who will be your teammate next year, caused the penalty that lead up to 2-2…

“This is destiny. All of us are professionals and I really do not think he did this on purpose. Every professional tries to do his or her best and, when these things happen it is part of destiny.”

What could bring a bit of continuity to this team?

“We will see this next year. We will definitely try to improve this summer, because Inter is a team and a club that can not afford these highs and lows. This will be the first thing to fix. We had an excellent start to this season but then we started to under perform. It is a thing where we have to improve, but this team is called Pazza Inter for a reason, that is why we have these performances on a high and a low level. Next year we will try to stay in the middle…”

You will play in the UCL for the first time, will it be with Inter?

“I will speak to the club and I will try to do what is best for Inter. Our goal this season was the UCL and we managed to get there, we will restart from there. My new house? It was a sign, as soon as it is ready I will throw a barbecue.”

What happened on the opportunities missed?

“I lost the ball a bit, behind me. The defender was coming and I wanted to get a shot which made me miss the finish. In the second half the cramp I suffered from made me miss the other chance.”

Do you expect any particular reinforcements when the transfer market opens?

“Now we have the possibility to do well on the transfer market and the club will do its best. Last year they did the best that they could, which improved the team a lot. The guys on the bench can enter the game and make a difference, let us restart from that base. Should there be any new arrivals we will welcome them with open arms. ”

Still hoping for a World Cup spot?

“Let us see tomorrow. If not, I will take a vacation.”

Icardi: “We Knew That We Could Achieve This Goal”

Inter captain Mauro Icardi shared his joy at qualifying for next season’s Champions League in an interview with Rai following Inter’s 3-2 win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

“We knew the game was going to be difficult but we were knew that we could do it. Since we went to China to do the tour we knew that we could achieve this goal. In the end we got the result we all hoped for.”

The Argentine forward, who netted Inter’s 2nd goal, then spoke on his future.

“My goal this year was to bring Inter to the Champions League and we did it. I’ll talk to the club about my future, we have two months to talk. Everybody knows I’m the number one Nerazzurri fan and I’m fine in Milan with my family, I want to stay.”

He proceeded to reflect on what might have otherwise come of the season after the fine start and spoke on his 29 goals this season.

“No, I did not expect more from this season. Our goal was to go to the Champions League, but after the great start we had the fans expecting something more. The first thing we had to do was to have consistency with our results, in this respect we have definitely improved. In our work we have been determined day after day, week after week.

“29 goals this season? I try to improve every year. I’ll talk about this with the coach, to try and fix my faults. I try to do the best I can, I’m a striker so I have to score and for now I’m doing it. Inter are not dependant on me. My teammates work for me to score a goal, this is my job, just like the goalkeeper has to save shots, everyone has their own role in the team and must do well in their area.”

Icardi concluded the interview by speaking on a possible inclusion in Argentina’s squad for the World Cup.

“The final squad will come out tomorrow. I do not know anything so we’ll see if I’ll be called, if not I’ll be quiet and ready to start again next year in the best way.”
