Luciano Spalletti has offered a staunch defence of Inter captain Mauro Icardi following Saturday’s defeat to Sassuolo, claiming that ‘if we’re still in the hunt for Champions League place then it’s largely thanks to him.’

Icardi has come in for criticism following his performance against the Neroverdi as Inter fell to a 2-1 loss in their final home game of the season, but Spalletti believes it would be unfair to single him out for blame after the season he has had.

“He’s responsible for a lot of the points that are currently keeping us in contention for a top four finish,” the Nerazzurri’s head coach told reporters on Sunday. “There are no black marks against Mauro, he only deserves credit [for what he has done this season].”

Inter will have one last chance to secure a place in next season’s Champions League on Sunday when they face fourth-placed Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, following the Biancoceleste’s 2-2 draw with Crotone at the weekend.

Spalletti remains confident that his side can reach the objective they set themselves at the beginning of the season, although he admits that beating Simone Inzaghi’s side will not be straightforward.

“We need to go and win against a team that’s played some great football this season,” Spalletti added. “It’ll be difficult.

“I believed we could qualify for the Champions League at the start of the season and now I am 100% convinced. Sometimes your emotions can play tricks on you and we need to get better at dealing with these situations.

“We had a terrible result on Saturday but we didn’t put in a terrible performance. The team was too frenetic [when trying to recover the match], at times we become emotionally penetrable.”

Inter are confident of recovering both Roberto Gagliardini and Miranda for their Champions League showdown against Lazio, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Gagliardini has not featured for the Nerazzurri since 17 April after sustaining a thigh strain during the 4-0 win at home to Cagliari while Miranda has missed their last two games due to a muscular contracture in the same place.

However Luciano Spalletti is counting on both returning to the starting XI for Sunday’s crunch match at the Stadio Olimpico, telling reporters last night that the Italian’s recovery was ‘probable’.

Gagliardini has followed a careful recuperation program during the last few weeks but Inter expect him to intensify his training over the coming days before rejoining the rest of the squad.

Centre-back Miranda meanwhile was left out of the squad for Saturday’s match against Sassuolo as a precaution, and is thought to be nearly recovered. The Brazilian will compete with Andrea Ranocchia for a starting berth alongside Milan Skriniar in the centre of defence.

Inter are considering a summer move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, Corriere dello Sport reports.

Having all-but secured the arrivals of Stefan De Vrij, Kwadwo Asamoah and Lautaro Martinez for the following season, the Nerazzurri are now looking for players with ‘personality’ to reinforce their midfield as the transfer window moves closer.

According to the Rome-based publication, Carvalho’s is a name that needs to be kept in consideration as he could be the player sporting director Piero Ausilio moves for in the coming weeks.

The paper also provides an update on the futures of Luciano Spalletti and Mauro Icardi, who are both said to be heading towards remaining with the club.

Spalletti has convinced Inter’s Italian management and is expected to be offered a contract extension at some point, provided owners Suning give the all clear, as he is seen as a key figure in the club’s project heading forward.

Icardi meanwhile is said to want to stay at the club, like he has always insisted, and is therefore more likely to stay than to leave as things stand.
