The way the second half of the football season has shaped up isn’t ideal, with only the Bundesliga back in full swing, playing out in front of empty stadiums and with muted goal celebrations, meaning politicians will have the final say on when the beautiful game returns.
The situation makes the summer transfer window all the more interesting, with the fitness of potential signings harder to ascertain and clubs less willing to financially stretch themselves in such a volatile economic climate.
This is where scouts, directors of football and managers really earn their crust, as they trawl the leagues in search of diamonds in the rough. Here are some of this summer’s hottest free transfer targets that Inter could acquire to strengthen their squad.

Edinson Cavani
Inter have one of the hottest prospects in European football on their books in the form of Lautaro Martinez, and with the player almost certain to go somewhere like the Nou Camp, despite Luis Suárez advising him to do otherwise, it seems like Inter will be forced to cash in.
With the Argentine’s release clause of €111 million likely to be matched by a European giant, Inter are on the hunt for a replacement to partner last season’s sensation, Lukaku. Cavani could be just the man, although his wages might be a sticking point, as well as there being competition from other clubs keen to acquire a proven elite level goal getter.
Dries Mertens
Sometimes signing a player who has no experience of playing in Serie A is a risk, which is why Napoli’s Dries Mertens is such a tantalising proposition, especially seeing as Italy could be making moves to leave the European Union, making international transfers trickier in the short term.
Mertens might be a better foil for Lukaku than Cavani and his wage demands would probably be more realistic too. If Mertens still holds ambitions of claiming the Scudetto then the San Siro might be a good bet for him, as well as Inter fans hungry to supersede Juventus and the evergreen Ronaldo.
Mario Götze
This World Cup final winning goal scorer has been in something of a funk of late, with club politics at Dortmund as well as changes to the managerial backroom staff playing havoc with his form.
However, the German is still thought of highly by most of the powers that be in European football and at the tender age of just 27 his best years could still be ahead of him, unlike some of the other names on this list. If German football’s political movers and shakers don’t get their act together, Inter could well take advantage and swoop for the man known as Super Mario.

David Silva
Inter have done a good job of raiding the Premier League for talent. A World Cup winner of Silva’s stature could be another solid proposition, adding invaluable experience and a calm head to their midfield ranks.
Although a return to Spain or career twilight move to Asia look more likely, it could be worth Inter diving in and giving him an offer he can’t refuse.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
We had to throw one crazy curve ball into the mix and who better to cause a stir than Zlatan, a man whose goal scoring longevity is only bettered by Ronaldo.
Given his age, a move from AC wouldn’t be as controversial as such a switch normally could be, but would obviously stir the pot a little all the same. Having said that, the Swede has never shied away from courting controversy and with Bologna the only other Italian side showing interest, Inter could come calling with a one-year contract for the big man.
