Why 4-4-2 Should Be Go-to Formation for Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in 2015-16

Some had anticipated surprises, but Diego Simeone isn’t one for those. At the Estadio Municipal de Burgo de Osma for Atletico Madrid‘s pre-season opener against Numancia on Saturday, Simeone, despite speculation over his formation, stuck with the familiar: his characteristic 4-4-2.

It was a low-key opening to the campaign for Atleti. On the same day, Manchester United and Barcelona met at a packed house in Santa Clara, Chelsea battled Paris Saint-Germain in Charlotte, Arsenal fought Lyon in London and AC Milan clashed with neighbours Inter Milan in Shenzhen. Atleti, meanwhile, met a Segunda Division outfit in a tiny community in northern Spain that’s home to little more than 5,000 people. Its football venue might be better termed a ground than a stadium

Still, the occasion was notable for one thing: Simeone‘s lineup. If the Argentinian was going to alter the team’s shape for 2015-16, this would have been the occasion to start that shift, to begin the evolutionary phase. For this is a team that’s played in a 4-4-2 since his arrival, rendering time precious for orchestrating systematic change.

Thus, the fact that Simeone opted for his tried-and-tested formation was revealing, his XI that featured Miguel Angel Moya, Juanfran, Diego Godin, Jose Gimenez, Guilherme Siqueira, Tiago, Koke, Saul Niguez, Yannick Carrasco, Antoine Griezmann and Luciano Vietto indicating that the 4-4-2 will continue for the upcoming season.

Many had pondered whether that would change this summer for Los Colchoneros. Simeone‘s intention to give his team a “new stimulus” and the quick, dual-capture of Vietto and Jackson Martinez had fans picturing a dynamic 4-3-3, a system that would flank the Colombian with Vietto and Griezmann in a sparkling front three—the in-vogue approach at La Liga’s summit. With Fernando Torres on hand to play a supporting role, Marca dubbed the quartet “Simeone’s gunners.”

However, Simeone prefers to build a team the conventional way, from back to front, prioritising defensive strength and using that as a springboard for all else. Key to that is his preference for a midfield pivot, which at the Vicente Calderon might be better described as a two-man midfield shield. A 4-3-3 couldn’t provide that; a 4-2-3-1 could. Might the latter be an option for the Argentinian boss?

Two weeks ago, it seemed possible. But the signing of Carrasco changed all that. A hard-running, dribble-happy left-sided attacker, the Belgian demands a place in the XI. Though just 21 years of age, he’s already an international, started 33 of Monaco’s 38 league games last season and is further along the line toward being a finished product than Vietto is.

Still, the use of a 4-2-3-1 from Simeone would put Carrasco in a head-to-head battle with Griezmann for the left-sided attacking berth—the position the new signing insisted he wanted at his unveiling, as he dispelled any notion of being a replacement for Arda Turan

Additionally, a 4-2-3-1 demands a central hub or focal point in the form of a No. 10, the type of player Atleti are in short supply of. Griezmann, Vietto and Carrasco are forwards or wide men; Koke and Saul are central midfielders; Tiago and Gabi are traditional anchors. The only possible options would be Oliver Torres and Angel Correa.

That pair certainly carry the technical quality for the role, but neither man possesses the experience necessary for a permanent starting place in the XI. Both just 20, they’re talented but raw; exciting but not yet battle-tested. And Simeone, remember, is happy to put his young stars though tough love, just as he did with Griezmann in the opening half of last season.

Thus, the 4-4-2 is the obvious system for Simeone and Atletico Madrid. Up front, Martinez will partner Griezmann in a sort of modern big-man-little-man combination, one packed full of pace, power and lethal finishing skills. Positively for Simeone this term, there’s also the presence of a competent backup for his leading striker in Fernando Torres, while Vietto will essentially act as Griezmann‘s understudy.

Vietto will be an interesting case at the Vicente Calderon in 2015-16. Precocious, hungry, hand-picked by Simeone and the owner of a €20 million price tag, the Argentinian will carry significant expectation, an eagerness likely to exist at the Vicente Calderon to see the 21-year-old thrust into the spotlight. “He’s another Griezmann,” will be the overriding feeling on the banks of the Manzanares

However, there are differences between the respective arrivals of the Frenchman and the Argentinian. When Griezmann made the switch to the Spanish capital, he was 23, had lived in Spain for five years, had been a permanent fixture at Real Sociedad, was an international and had sparkled at the World Cup.

Vietto, meanwhile, arrives two years younger and is still settling into life in Spain, hasn’t yet represented his country at senior level and made only 17 starts in La Liga last season.

He wasn’t guaranteed a place at El Madrigal before moving to the Calderon, meaning patience will be the key with Vietto

Behind that attack, Simeone‘s 4-4-2 will employ a four-man midfield most likely to consist of Koke, Gabi, Saul and Carrasco, the latter providing the sort width, pace and ball-carrying skills Atleti have often lacked on the flanks in recent seasons.

At first glance, the rest of the midfield feels very familiar. But though it will be in shape, it won’t be in style. Having used Gabi and Tiago centrally for so long, Simeone, in his desire to oversee “an internal movement where the team takes a step forward,” as he told AS (h/t Football Espana), will shift Koke into the central pivot. “That is going to start generating a team from another idea,” Simeone added.

The positional alteration will see Koke move into a role very similar to that which he now plays under Vicente del Bosque in the Spanish national side, where his combination of vision, passing skills and defensive awareness makes him a natural deep-lying midfielder.

Joined by Saul, Koke in his enhanced role will change the way Atleti move the ball. In 2015-16, the movement will be faster, more crisp. Involving greater interchanges and positional flow. The idea, of course, is to devise a more dynamic midfield to feed a more dynamic attack.

Simeone‘s 4-4-2 can provide exactly that. It’s a system that’s familiar, characteristically Simeone. But next season, it will have a different edge, a different feel.

Tantalisingly, it should be significantly better, too.

Stevan Jovetic Transfer News: Latest Rumours, Speculation on Manchester City F

Forward Stevan Jovetic appears to be moving on from Manchester City just two years after signing with the club, as the player is expected to join with Inter Milan this summer.

Continue for updates.

Jovetic to Have Medical with Inter on Tuesday

Sunday, July 26

The club confirmed via their official Twitter account that Jovetic would be arriving in Milan on Monday and undergoing a medical on Tuesday.

The potential move doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as Inter manager Roberto Mancini has vocally sung Jovetic’s praises this summer.

“We really need an attacker because we only have two players up front at the moment,” Mancini told Corriere dello Sport, per Richard Jolly of ESPN FC. “I already tried to sign Jovetic in my last season with Manchester City, but he arrived when I was gone. He can play as a focal point or as a support striker but could also feature on the wings.”

That versatility was never utilized at Manchester City, where the 25-year-old dealt with injuries and ultimately played a diminished role with the club, appearing in just 30 contests (10 starts) and accumulating eight goals and four assists.

Those numbers were a far cry from the production he had with Fiorentina (27 goals and eight assists from 2011-13) that led to City signing him for £22 million in the summer of 2013.

Still, with Sergio Aguero entrenched as the starter at forward, Wilfried Bony and Edin Dzeko (if he remains with the club) waiting in the wings and Raheem Sterling signed to bring more potency to the wings, it’s hard to see where Jovetic would have fit in with City this season.

At Inter, he has the chance to shine and reinvigorate what was a promising young career before it was slightly detoured at City. His versatility, playmaking ability and penchant for scoring will instantly improve the Italian club and should make him one of the more exciting players to watch in Italy, as he was in his Fiorentina days.

Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan: Team News, Preview, Live Stream, TV Info

Real Madrid arrive at China’s International Champions Cup having already picked up the trophy from Australia’s edition.

It didn’t start well, with a dull goalless draw with Roma, which they went on to lose on penalties. But Los Blancos picked things up against Manchester City and romped to a 4-1 victory.

Rafa Benitez’s side looked significantly sharper than their English opponents, with two thirds of the famous “BBC,” Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, among the goalscorers.

The final member of the striker force, Gareth Bale, was playing in a supporting role in a more central position and did a decent job too, setting up the opener for Benzema.

Isco performed brilliantly against Manchester City, helping set up Denis Cheryshev’s goal and will be hoping he can keep impressing the coach, before James Rodriguez returns.

The Colombian has extra time off after participating at the Copa America for his country in the summer.

Having seen Barcelona win the treble last term, tensions are high at Madrid. Benitez needs to get off to a good start.

While winning pre-season games means nothing if they then struggle when La Liga begins, it does boost morale.

Inter Milan, like Madrid, are coming back from a bad season. Theirs was considerably worse in fact, finishing eighth.

They also suffered defeat to archrivals AC Milan on Saturday, losing 1-0 to a wonderful Philippe Mexes volley.

His 62nd-minute strike was the goal that made the difference in the Chinese International Champions Cup opener.

AC Milan were left with 10 men after Antonio Nocerino was sent off for a lunge at Geoffrey Kondogbia, but Inter couldn’t take advantage and find the equaliser.

It was their second pre-season friendly defeat, with German giants Bayern Munich seeing them off by the same 1-0 scoreline a few days earlier. Mario Gotze struck late on as Pep Guardiola’s team eked out a victory.

Roberto Mancini’s Inter will be looking to build up their confidence by taking a pop at Rafa’s Real on Monday.

Madrid played Inter Milan in this competition last year, with Gareth Bale scoring a brilliant goal in a 1-1 draw. Los Blancos lost that game on penalties.

Predicted Lineups

Real Madrid: Kiko Casilla, Danilo, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Casemiro, Isco, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema.

Inter Milan: Samir Handanovic, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Andrea Ranocchia, Jeison Murillo, Federico Dimarco, Marcelo Brozovic, Mateo Kovacic, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Hernanes, Rodrigo Palacio, Mauro Icardi.

Tournament Information

Date: Monday, July 27

Time: 1 p.m. BST/8 a.m. ET

Venue: Tianhe Stadium, Guangzhou

TV Info: Sky Sports 1 UK; Fox Sports 1 USA

Live Stream: Sky Go UK; Fox Sports Go

Key Battle

Rafa Benitez is tinkering around with his attack, and Cristiano Ronaldo may be handed a central role in this friendly, rather than his usual wider position. Even if he’s not, Ronaldo has started occupying that space in the middle of his own accord. New Inter Milan star Jeison Murillo will be looking to test himself against the Portuguese star.

There are few better ways to warm up for the season ahead than against one of the game’s greats.

AC Milan vs. Inter Milan: Lessons Learned from International Champions Cup

AC Milan defeated Inter Milan in the “first” derby of the new season, with the International Champions Cup pre-season fixture being played in China and ending with a 1-0 scoreline.

A low-key fixture was well-supported by both sets of fans, but the spectacular goal from Philippe Mexes—a first-time mid-air volley off a corner kick—was totally out of keeping with the rest of the match. Antonio Nocerino saw a straight red card late on.

It’s early in pre-season for both clubs but here are a few pointers and thoughts that the two managers, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Roberto Mancini, might take away from the game.

AC Milan vs. Inter: Score, Grades and Reaction from 2015 ICC

AC Milan scored a 1-0 victory over rivals Inter Milan in the opening match of the Chinese edition of the 2015 International Champions Cup on Saturday. Philippe Mexes scored the game’s only goal with a wonder strike shortly after the hour mark.

Although it’s only the preseason, taking part in a Derby della Madonnina brought a little extra intensity to the match despite the makeshift lineups. Milan head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic talked before the fixture about trying to set a new tone, as noted by the club’s official site.

“I would like to get used to winning the derby straight away. I expect improvements in every area, even when it comes to character,” he said. “You don’t play in derbies, you win them. Let’s try to win one straight away, it will not be easy but we are Milan and we always have to play to win.”

The Rossoneri emerged as the more active side in the early going. They controlled the majority of the possession inside the first half hour and created a couple of looks a goal. The best chance during the stretch came from M’Baye Niang, who broke free but couldn’t beat Juan Pablo Carrizo from close range.

Milan should have easily grabbed the lead in the 39th minute. Alessandro Matri and Niang beat a high offside trap from Inter and raced into the box all alone, but Matri delivered the ball behind the forward and without enough pace, allowing the Nerazzurri to recover and clear the danger.

The action slowed down during the latter stages of the half as a hot, humid day in Shenzhen started to take its toll on both clubs. They entered the locker rooms for halftime deadlocked at zero.

The Kilpin Chronicle wrapped up the opening 45 minutes:

Inter Offside wasn’t impressed by the form of either side:

Milan made eight substitutions coming out of the break while Inter stuck with their starting lineup for an additional 15 minutes before the wholesale changes began around the hour mark.

Mexes finally broke the scoreless tie in the 62nd minute.

Jose Mauri had a promising attempt blocked out for a corner by the Inter defense. The ensuing delivery to the top of the box seemed relatively harmless, but Mexes unleashed an extraordinary volley that left Carrizo with no hope of making a save.

Wide World of Sports spotlighted the play:

Opta Paolo provided a note about the game-winning goal:

The Nerazzurri played the final minutes of the match with an extra man after Antonio Nocerino got sent off for a reckless challenge from behind on Geoffrey Kondogbia. It’s rare to see that type of aggression in a preseason match, and it certainly warranted the red card.

Inter couldn’t take advantage, however, as Milan saw out the remaining minutes to earn the victory. It wasn’t a technical masterpiece by any stretch, but Mihajlovic got the win he wanted.

AC Milan celebrated the triumph:

Looking ahead, Inter return to action on Monday for their second and final game of the event against Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. That should serve as a much-needed defensive test for the Nerazzurri as the preseason preparations ramp up.

Milan also face off with Los Blancos to complete the round-robin tournament on Thursday. The Rossoneri will be looking to showcase a far better final touch in the attacking third in that clash. They let too many chances slip away against Inter.

The rivals are set to face off again before the preseason comes to a close. The next matchup is slated for the TIM Trophy event back in Italy on Aug. 12.

Grades for Key Players

Keisuke Honda (AC Milan): B+

The Japanese attacking midfielder put together a workmanlike performance. He pushed forward effectively in the first half, creating several chances with pinpoint deliveries. The lack of finishing left him without a deserved assist or two before exiting at the half.

Philippe Mexes (AC Milan): A-

It didn’t take long for the halftime substitute to make an impact. His goal off the corner will be one of the best the club score all season as the timing and placement were impeccable. He also did well to defend as Inter pushed for an equalizer in the final 20 minutes.

Marco Andreolli (Inter): B-

The veteran center back did well while leading a mostly reserve lineup. The Inter defense found itself under pressure quite often but held its shape and kept the game close throughout. He wasn’t at fault for the only goal Milan did score.

Samuele Longo (Inter): C

Roberto Mancini handed the 23-year-old striker a chance to start atop the formation. He responded with a mostly invisible performance. Surely part of that was due to the side’s struggles to retain possession for extended stretches, but he failed to make an impact when chances did arise.
