10 Players That Should Leave Manchester City This Summer

After their disastrous defeat to rivals Manchester United last weekend, Manchester City are now looking forward to finishing this season by just securing a Champions League place. Undoubtedly, the Citizens will need to do better next season by replacing some of their players in the next transfer window.

Some players are already looking like they are heading for the exit, such as Yaya Toure, who could be leaving for Inter Milan in the summer. Meanwhile, other players may not want to leave, but unfortunately they have shown that they are not good enough for the Premier League (e.g. Eliaquim Mangala).

This ranked, 10-player list will explain why each player should leave, what they bring to the team (if anything) and how easy it would be for them to leave Manchester. The list will be ranked accordingly to these standards.

Ex-Chelsea Wonderkid Slobodan Rajkovic: Where Is He Now?

If Serbian centre-back Slobodan Rajkovic, 26, had met Chelsea‘s expectations, then John Terry might be playing in Major League Soccer.

Rajkovic losing prestige meant he never challenged Terry, who recently earned a new contract at 34 years of age and is a mentor to Kurt Zouma.

Let’s see how the career of Rajkovic has progressed.

The Wunderkind That Never Was

November 21, 2005.

OFK Belgrade announcing the sale of Rajkovic to Chelsea coincided with Terry “enduring a rare off-day” and suffering a “groin strain” against Newcastle United, per Jon Brodkin at the Guardian.

The following clubs were reportedly chasing Rajkovic, per BBC Sport.

OFK Belgrade relinquished Rajkovic when Chelsea offered €5.1/£3.5 million, a sky-high fee sum for a schoolboy. The Blues immediately loaned him back to the Serbian club until he turned 18 years old.

Continuing a mutually beneficial relationship with PSV EindhovenChelsea loaned Rajkovic out, hoping that he would develop like Alex, per Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Gerrit van Leeuwen at Sky Sports).

“I am obviously delighted to play for such a big club as PSV Eindhoven,” Rajkovic said, per PSV TV. “I know about all the players, but in particular those who operate in my position.”

  1. Carlos Salcido.
  2. Dirk Marcellis.
  3. Eric Addo.

Salcido and Addo were experienced, while Marcellis’ ceiling was Jaap Stam 2.0.

Consigned to squad-filler status, Rajkovic watched then-Chelsea loanee Alcides plug holes as a utility player.

We don’t know how Rajkovic, tipped for greatness, felt when Alcides was playing. However, incredulous would probably be an apt description.

Alcides was Chelsea’s version of Bebe.

A borderline professional footballer, Alcides strangely found himself on the squad lists of several prominent European clubs: Schalke, Chelsea, Benfica and PSV Eindhoven.

Chelsea tried quelling questions over their involvement with Alcides, per Daniel King at the Daily Mail: “He’s not our player but we hold first option to buy him, much like the option we had with Alex.”

PSV Eindhoven must have been a quirky experience for Rajkovic.

  • Kenneth Perez defected from Ajax to PSV Eindhoven—then rejoined Ajax.
  • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (33 goals) and Luis Suarez (16 goals) combined for 49 goals, yet Ajax still failed to win the Eredivisie.
  • Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven won the Eredivisie having had three different managers. Ronald Koeman resigned to coach Valencia. Jan Wouters took over as caretaker before he was replaced by another caretaker in Sef Vergoossen, whose previous job was managing Arsene Wenger’s old club Nagoya Grampus in Japan.

Rather than offer the regurgitated public relations response of wishing Rajkovic the best of luck in his future endeavours, PSV Eindhoven were blunt in explaining the reasoning behind not renewing his loan:

“Rajkovic spent last season with PSV Eindhoven,” per the club’s official website. “He did not feature in the first team to a great extent due to the fierce competition for places in the starting 11.”

Prolonged Adversity

Then-Twente manager Steve McClaren punted on Rajkovic, taking the struggling teenager on loan from Chelsea.

“Many clubs, especially in England, wanted [Rajkovic’s] signature,” McClaren said, per Twente’s official website (h/t Sky Sports). “I want to have as strong a squad as possible with competition for places in each position.”

Playing for Serbia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Rajkovic was not named as an outstanding player by the technical study group, yet compatriots Gojko Kacar and Zoran Tosic were.

Though neither is a defender, the centre-backs selected as outstanding players by the FTSG were slim pickings.

It was an indictment of Rajkovic’s real quality, per FIFA:

  • Andre Bikey (Cameroon).
  • Li Weifeng (China).
  • Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand).

Instead of showing up on the world stage, Rajkovic not only underwhelmed but embarrassed Serbia, Chelsea and Twente.

Like ESPN’s Britt McHenry channelling her inner Regina George, Rajkovic briefly lost sense of decorum as he spat in the direction of referee Abdullah Al Hilali during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Serbia.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee threatened to derail Rajkovic’s career by suspending him for 12 months in club and international competition, per FIFA.

Then-Twente chairman Joop Munsterman was frustrated at having paid for Rajkovic, who could not play because he was suspended.

“We could have had Rajkovic [playing] for three months already, and we paid a lot of money for him,” Munsterman said, per Voetbal International (h/t ESPN FC). “We don’t like it at all that the [suspension] has lingered on already for so long.”

Appealing the suspension, FIFA upheld the international ban but allowed Rajkovic to resume playing for Twente, per the Associated Press (h/t USA Today).

Unable to play for Serbia further dented Rajkovic’s hopes of qualifying for a work permit to play in the Premier League, so his loan at Twente was extended for another campaign.

Rajkovic played 23 league games over two seasons at Twente.

He was backing up Douglas and Peter Wisgerhof as McClaren led Twente to the 2009/10 Eredivisie title.

Playing a fourth successive Eredivisie season, Chelsea loaned Rajkovic to Vitesse along with compatriot Nemanja Matic.

Then-Vitesse technical director Ted van Leeuwen revealed there was an option to extend both Serbians’ loans into permanent deals at the end of the season.

“Vitesse are very pleased that Rajkovic and Matic have joined the club,” Van Leeuwen said, per Stefan Coerts at Goal. “Vitesse had been monitoring both players for quite a while.”

Sliding Doors Moment

During the 2011 January transfer window, the lives of Rajkovic and Matic irreparably changed.

Chelsea were willing to deal away either Jeffrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt or Rajkovic plus money to Benfica to land David Luiz, per Dominic Fifield at The Guardian.

Benfica turned down all three options. They demanded Matic—their scouts were right on the money.

Benfica sold Luiz to Chelsea for 25/£21.3 million plus Matic, who Chelsea bought back for 25.3/£21 million in 2014.

Vitesse signing Rajkovic permanently never came to fruition.

Being pulled all over the place by a bunch of modest pros inspired by Willie Overtoom during Heracles Almelo‘s 6-1 win over Vitesse probably sunk Rajkovic’s case to qualify as an “exceptional talent” to gain a work permit to play in the Premier League.

“I would prefer to stay at Chelsea even though I know I would even have to fight for a place on the bench,” Rajkovic said, per Matt Barlow at the Daily Mail. “My greatest wish is to still be in London.”

Like his talent, his wish was unfulfilled.

Hamburg Bust

Chelsea sold Rajkovic to Hamburg for a nominal fee of €2/£1.8 million in 2011.

He immediately faced questions from the German media over his integrity.

“Sadly cameras never captured [me spitting] so that I could exonerate myself, but I know in my heart that I was guilty of nothing,” Rajkovic said, per Hamburg’s official website. “That is in the past, and now I am only looking forward to playing for Hamburg.”

Here is what Rajkovic looked forward to.

November 1, 2011, per Clark Whitney at Goal: Receives three-match suspension for elbowing Christian Tiffert in a 1-1 draw against Kaiserslautern.

July 14, 2012, per Hamburg’s official webite: “Suspended until further notice” for being involved in a fight with then-Hamburg golden child Heung-Min Son.

November 3, 2012, per Transfermarkt: Dropped to Hamburg II, starting in a 2-0 defeat to Wolfsburg II.

November 6, 2012, per Hamburg’s official website: Tears hamstring.

April 10, 2013, per TransfermarktDropped to Hamburg II, starting in a 2-2 draw against ETSV Weiche.

March 30, 2013, per Kicker: Fourteen Hamburg footballers had the misfortune of playing in a 9-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. Rajkovic was one of the 12 Hamburg players who received the worst rating possible (6.0; graded from 1.0 to 6.0, the lower the better).

March 3, 2014, per Hamburg’s official website: “The diagnosis was nerve shattering as the news came back that Rajkovic has damaged cruciate ligaments in his left knee. He will undergo surgery next week and will be out of action for six to eight months.”

This season, Rajkovic has been his club’s fourth-choice centre-back behind Cleber, Heiko Westermann, and Johan Djourou.

Hamburg are currently bottom of the Bundesliga having accumulated just 25 points from 28 games.

What Rajkovic Means To Chelsea

  • Sergio Ramos | Sevilla → Real Madrid: €27/£18.4 million (19 years old, 2005).
  • Slobodan Rajkovic | OFK Belgrade  Chelsea: €5.1/£3.5 million (16 years old, 2005).
  • Ezequiel Garay | Newell’s Old Boys → Racing Santander: €1.4 million/£959,420 (19 years old, 2006).
  • Cristian Zapata | Deportivo Cali  Udinese€500,000/£341,450 (18 years old, 2005).

Real Madrid accurately projected Ramos would develop into a world-class defender, but at the time, it was not a value-for-money deal.

You presume Chelsea sought a cheaper alternative to Ramos in Rajkovic.

Comparing Rajkovic to Garay and Zapata, there is a glaring discrepancy in the transfer fees and age.

Garay (Real Madrid, Benfica, FC Zenit) and Zapata (Villarreal, AC Milan) have had periods of elite form in their careers.

Chelsea were overzealous and overpaid OFK Belgrade for Rajkovic.

Like Real Madrid banking on Ramos, you assume Chelsea went all in on Rajkovic believing he was a can’t-miss prospect.

He wasn’t.

He never qualified for a work permit by playing 75 per cent of his nation’s games during the two years preceding an application or as an exceptional talent.

Do you know who the anti-Rajkovic is? Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea signed Courtois from Genk as a 19-year-old for €9/£7.9 million in 2011. The Belgian was subsequently loaned out to Atletico Madrid for three seasons and has since supplanted Petr Cech as Chelsea’s No. 1.

Post-Rajkovic, Chelsea incorporated non-English prospects such as Charly Musonda, Andreas Christensen and Jeremie Boga into the 2015 UEFA Youth League winning team.

The net loss of €3.1/£1.7 million on Rajkovic has been worthwhile as an invaluable case study to Chelsea when identifying foreign talent.

Inter Milan vs. AC Milan: 10 Amazing Moments from Past Milan Derbies

The fiercest derby in Italy will be renewed on Sunday as AC Milan and Inter clash for the second time this season at the San Siro.

These city rivals have played each other 213 times in official matches over the course of history. Parity makes rivalries so much more interesting, and these two teams have, on the whole, been almost level since they first met. The Nerazzurri narrowly lead the series by 76 wins to 74 with 63 draws.

The most recent of those draws came back in November, when the two teams played out a drab game that finished 1-1. Indeed, the last few games between the sides have lacked the fireworks of derbies past. That is probably a symptom of the struggles both teams have endured over the last few years.

There’s always greater intensity in a derby when teams are fighting for places at the top of the table, so if they slip down the standings, there will always be a slight loss of that zeal regardless of how fierce a rivalry may be.

The Derby della Madonnina has indeed given us some memorable moments over the years. In this article, we revisit 10 occasions—both full games and individual moments qualify—that show just how special this matchup can be.

Manchester United: Why Danny Ings Would Be a Shrewd Signing for the Red Devils

Every summer Manchester United are linked with superstar players, bringing excitement to the club, and top-notch quality if a deal is actually secured.

Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney are among the club’s most expensive summer signings, and turned out to have superb careers for the club (and Rooney is still there).

However, for every marquee signing United may land, it is also important for them to make shrewd, astute signings to round out their squad.

At the beginning of the season, United seemed to be stacked at forward, sporting the likes of Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao, Robin Van Persie and youngster James Wilson.

However, things have not gone to plan. Van Persie has scored just two goals in the last two months, struggling for form and fitness. And Falcao has a measly four goals in EPL action.

Because of these developments, it seems possible if not likely that both of these players are shipped off in the summer.

Conrad Leach of The Guardian has linked the Dutchman with a move to Inter Milan, while Jacob Steinberg from the same paper suggests Falcao could be headed to Anfield.

Naturally, when two high-profile players leave, there will be a desire to replace them, and that will be a point of emphasis if United’s only strikers are the raw James Wilson and Wayne Rooney, who will turn 30 next October.

Some fans may want to see Javier Hernandez given one final shot at the club, but it seems that he and the club are ready to move on. Alex Cook of The Mirror suggests that the Mexican will be used as bait to acquire Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne.

However, while “Chicharito” may soon be leaving the club for good, he was relatively successful and lessons can be learned from the purchase of him.

The striker arrived at Manchester United in 2010 from Mexican club Guadalajara, with little fanfare. Many fans were unfamiliar with the player, and he cost around £5 million, per Transfermarkt.

However, the “little pea” soon became a fan favorite, and scored 37 goals in 102 appearances for the club.

He was never really one of the team’s star players, and was often forced to come off the bench, but nonetheless he proved to be a valuable asset for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Burnley striker Danny Ings has recently been linked to the Red Devils (Will Giles of The Metro), and for those questioning his quality, “the Hernandez role” could certainly be his niche.

Aside from the fact that Burnley is an unglamorous club to buy from, there are really no negatives to a potential Ings transfer.

Firstly, he is young, at 23 years of age. Ings is already a productive player, but could get even better.

Next, he is English. Of course, there is nothing wrong with the extremely spread out and diverse squad United currently have, but fans would certainly enjoy seeing a homegrown player in their ranks.

Lastly, and most importantly, the purchase of Ings would be extremely cheap. The figure of £5 million, reported by The Metrowould be extremely reasonable for such a precocious young talent.

A player bought from Burnley for a small sum doesn’t make for a big-time transfer, but not every purchase has to be.

United will likely be in the Champions League next season, and as they hope for a title run, a deep squad is necessary. Every championship-winning team, in all sports, have their stars but also their role players, and Ings could be suited to such a role.

United can sign Ings as a squad player and still make a run at signing a star like Thomas Muller that fans are clamoring for—the two are not mutually exclusive.

As long as Ings is bought for a reasonable price, and he is not given too much responsibility, there is really nothing to lose in signing him.

If Ings did flop at United, he would likely represent a very small financial loss for such a big club.

It’s much more likely he’ll be successful, however. Ings has a respectable nine goals and four assists for a struggling Burnley side, showing himself to be a quick, hard-working player, who would probably suit Louis Van Gaal nicely. He has also shown his ability to take on players with 1.7 dribbles per game, per WhoScored.com.

If the Englishman could carry these attributes over to Old Trafford, he could certainly find himself in an important squad-player role, starting some games and entering others as a super sub.

The most popular United players aren’t always the best ones, rather they’re often the ones who work the hardest and fill their roles the most successfully—look at how beloved Ji-Sung Park and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are.

Ings might never be a superstar at United, but he could certainly hold his own, and maybe even make some history along the way.

Liverpool Transfer News: Alexandre Lacazette, Oscar and Pedro Triple Blow

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking to significantly strengthen his team this summer but reports suggest his rumoured pursuits of Alexandre Lacazette, Oscar and Pedro are likely to end fruitless.

Lyon striker Lacazette is the top scorer in Ligue 1 this season, netting 25 goals. He is one of the sharpest finishers on the continent right now but has admitted he will remain with Lyon if they continue to progress, per Le Progres (h/t Vaishali Bhardwaj of the Metro):

It is too early to speak about opportunities of leaving abroad. In any case, it will be a footballing decision. To go to Qatar next season, that doesn’t interest me. I would like to sign a contract extension. I am good at Lyon, and if I feel that the project will continue ]to] advance, I can see myself staying. Even if we don’t win the Champions League.

It’s likely Liverpool would also need to keep showing progress to interest the player. Rodgers’ men face a battle to secure Champions League qualification for a second successive year, so the club could be a hard sell.

Lacazette is a natural finisher and is just the striker needed to lead Rodgers’ line. His pace would create space for playmakers Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana to operate in, allowing them to grab hold of possession high up the pitch.

B/R UK’s Sam Tighe recently suggested Lacazette should be a priority signing:

Rodgers may be looking to strengthen his options behind the attack. Simon Jones of the MailOnline suggested Liverpool are “keeping tabs” on Chelsea midfielder Oscar, a player who has lost a little momentum at Stamford Bridge this season.

However, Oscar recently told Sky SportsSaturday Night Football show—in an interview due to air prior to this weekend’s match between Chelsea and Manchester United—that he has no reason to leave:

I’m very happy here. I get along with everyone, and the club shows its praise towards me. Chelsea is one of the best clubs in the world, so I don’t see why I would think of leaving. I’m very happy with Chelsea’s season so far and happy with my own performance as well, but I do think I could have contributed more to the team.

Oscar offers the type of versatile, intricate football that makes Rodgers’ side tick. Like Lacazette, he’d be a major coup for the club, especially as Liverpool continue working toward becoming regular title challengers.

Barcelona winger Pedro is another name who has allegedly dealt Rodgers’ plans a blow after suggesting he wants to join Inter Milan, per Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (h/t Charles Perrin of the Express).

“Pedro, they claim, told current incumbent Roberto Mancini of his desire to move to the San Siro,” noted Perrin. A fee of £12 million would allegedly see this deal completed for a player who has fallen behind Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez in Barca’s pecking order this year.

Liverpool undoubtedly offer an attractive project, but after last season’s terrific form, this year is shaping up to be slightly underwhelming.

The Reds can still win the FA Cup and confirm a Champions League spot, though, so future prospects may suddenly look a lot brighter by the end of May. Such achievements may be key to luring players of Lacazette, Oscar and Pedro’s quality.

Inter Transfer Rumors: Yaya Toure Is Not the Answer for Roberto Mancini

According to Ben Gladwell at ESPN FC, Inter manager Roberto Mancini has identified Yaya Toure as a summer transfer target, eyeing a reunion with his former Manchester City midfielder.

The 31-year-old Ivorian—he’ll turn 32 at the end of this season—is enjoying yet another successful season, notching eight goals and an assist through 24 Premier League matches.

Although Toure has seemingly staved off the offensive decline expected of 30-something all-action midfielders, he has tons of mileage on those long legs.

He’s played at least 42 matches in each season since joining the Sky Blues from Barcelona back in 2010 and never featured in fewer than 37 matches across all competitions during his three-year tenure with Barca.

Injuries are impossible to predict, and I won’t aim to do so; however, I’d exercise extreme caution before handing a midfielder over 30 the contract Inter are said to be mulling over.

Per the Mirror, the Nerazzurri are preparing a Godfather offer£54 million over five years.

That is an absolutely massive sum and, as Gladwell details in the previously cited piece, a yearly salary that would be more than three times what Nemanja Vidic and Rodrigo Palacio, Inter’s highest earners, take home.

Don’t get me wrongon the pitch Toure would be a fantastic addition, but getting him in the famous black-and-blue kit seems like it’d take an unreasonable financial commitment.

Aside from the exorbitant contract he’ll command, City will be aiming to squeeze every penny out of Toure.

That’s a phrase rarely used as it pertains to uber-affluent Manchester City, but the club’s extravagant spending is being heavily curtailed by UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, or FFP.

FFP essentially states that a club can’t spend more than it makes, and due to City’s struggles this season, they’ll want to be major players in this summer’s transfer market.

However, before they can look to the silly season to bring in new talent, City will need to sell off some players and recoup as much money as possible, so they can drop the millions they want to.

Transfermarkt.com values the Ivorian at €28 million, and while that may be a bit of an over-valuation, again, don’t expect for City to let him leave on the cheap.

And City aren’t the only club in this rumored deal to be wrestling with FFPInter are also on UEFA’s radar.

Top earners Vidic and Palacio are signed through at least next season, as are third and fourth-highest earners Hernanes and Fredy Guarin.

Save for Guarin, unloading any of those three footballers won’t be an easy ask as all three are either approaching or over 30 years old, will be particular about the club they’d join and haven’t exactly set the world on fire with their season performances.

And speaking of Guarin, he can aptly occupy the box-to-box spot into which Toure would presumably slot.

It should go without saying that a club shouldn’t want to splash the cash at a position where they already have a capable starter, especially when the rumored target is even older than the incumbent.

Mauro Icardi, who, per the Express, is yet to agree to an improved contract with the Nerazzurri, would free up loads of spending flexibility, but he’s arguably the club’s brightest prospect.

Inter shouldn’t and don’t seem like they want to sell Icardi, so they’ll have very little room to spend on the new players Mancini clearly needs—that is, unless they’re able to unload some other players.

The Nerazzurri face a catch-22 this summer: They need to spend in order to improve their league position, but FFP hampers their ability to do so.

This summer will be a pivotal time for Inter, a historic club that has missed out on Europe in two of the past three seasons—and they’re a good bet to miss out on a top-five finish this year as well.

Uncertainty is abound at the San Siro, but one thing is for certain: Yaya Toure is not the answer for Roberto Mancini.

Chelsea Transfer News: Petr Cech to Join PSG, Latest Mauro Icardi Rumours

Former Chelsea star Ray Wilkins has claimed Petr Cech will join Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

Jonathan Johnson of ESPN FC tweeted Wilkins’ revelation after PSG fell 3-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday night:

Wilkins is likely to have better inside knowledge than most, having worked at Chelsea as coach, assistant first-team coach and caretaker manager since the turn of the century.

Cech dropped out of the Chelsea lineup with the return of Thibaut Courtois at the start of the campaign. Jose Mourinho has constantly favoured the youngster in Premier League competition, with Cech reduced to just four starts in the domestic division, per WhoScored.com.

He has made nine appearances in cup competitions, remaining committed to the west London side’s cause whenever called upon. Although Cech hasn’t made a fuss, he recently told Idnes (h/t ESPN FC) that his presence on the bench “can work for one season only.”

Cech would become a leader at PSG, but Salvatore Sirigu remains a top-class goalkeeper when in form. Laurent Blanc’s side could use a smattering of experienced winners to help PSG fulfill their potential in Europe. Cech has been a key figure of Chelsea’s Roman Abramovich era, so he knows what it’s like to play under the pressure of significant investment.

Although Mourinho is unlikely to receive major cash for the goalkeeper, every little bit helps as the summer transfer market opens. Chelsea have been “encouraged” in their quest to land Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, according to Telegraph Sport, but word from the Serie A club suggests they are looking to build around the Argentinian’s goalscoring form.

Piero Ausilio, Inter’s sporting director, confirms the side are hoping to renew Icardi‘s contract, as reported by Nima Tavallaey Roodsari of GianlucaDiMarzio.com: “In all renewals there are things that need to be fixed and times to follow. We want to extend and adjust Icardi‘s contract. And when there is a will, in the end, things will always work out.”

David Amoyal of the same website suggests both Inter and Icardi will make the agreement happen: “The biggest hurdle appears to be the exit clause which Inter doesn’t want to include in the contract. The parties however want to reach an agreement and will continue to work towards it.”

Amoyal also believes Inter should refrain from cashing in:

Icardi has scored 16 goals in 28 league matches this season, per WhoScored.com. He possesses a combative nature and is the type of player who can be loved by his own fans and loathed by others. B/R UK’s Matteo Bonetti recently detailed Icardi‘s personality and whether he could be a success at Stamford Bridge:

Chelsea supporters will no doubt be sad to hear Cech may leave, particularly if he’s to join a European side who could impact the Blues’ Champions League chances in the future. PSG knocked Mourinho‘s men out of Europe this season, so the inevitable showdown would only ever be one unlucky draw away.

Icardi has the promise to be a star under Mourinho, although it seems Inter will do all they can to ensure the 22-year-old remains at the San Siro.
