Primavera, Inter 3-0 Cagliari

SESTO SAN GIOVANNI – After two consecutive draws in the league and last Wednesday’s shootout victory over Fiorentina in the cup, Inter’s Primavera side got back to winning ways with a resounding 3-0 success over Cagliari this afternoon.

Stefano Vecchi’s boys quickly took control of proceedings and had established a two-goal advantage inside the first quarter of an hour.

First Camara linked up well with Romney, burst into the box and lifted a deft finish over the onrushing keeper. Then Baldini manufactured a second entirely of his own making, leaving his man for dust on the left flank before drilling a powerful angled finish past Cherchi.

Romney was unfortunate to see his effort tipped onto the bar shortly before half time as the Nerazzurri went into the break firmly in the driving seat.

Four minutes into the second period Baldini effectively ended the game as a contest when he latched onto a loose ball and netted his second of the day.

Not that Inter stopped playing. There was still plenty of time for Cherchi to deny Romney from the spot and the left-hand upright to deny Steffè a potential fourth.

Vecchi’s boys saw out the game comfortably to move up to 32 points and stay top of the pile ahead of AC Milan. Next week the Under-19s visit Hellas Verona.

Mancini: “Let’s get back to winning ways with our fans”

APPIANO GENTILE – A week on from the match at the Olimpico and ahead of welcoming Andrea Stramaccioni’s Udinese to the Meazza, Roberto Mancini shared his thoughts with the gathered media at a news conference.

He began: "I hope it’s a great game tomorrow. We’ll take the positives from Rome – and I think there were plenty of them."

A lot of the media attention in the build-up to tomorrow’s game has been on whether Mauro Icardi or Dani Osvaldo will start. The coach immediately satisified the journalists’ curiosity by declaring, "Icardi will start tomorrow. I went with Osvaldo against Roma because he was fresher but I have faith in both him and Mauro. I think Icardi can develop into a top-class centre forward. As I said, I have great confidence in him."

Mancini then analysed last Sunday’s game in more detail: "We did make some mistakes in Rome but I think we’re on the right path and I’m sure things will start to pick up. I’m convinced that if we hadn’t made those mistakes we wouldn’t have lost. And if we hadn’t conceded the third right after pegging them back to 2-2 we would have pushed on and tried to win the game."

Asked about having a leader in every area of the pitch, the coach continued: "All the players need good leadership skills. I’m sure they can improve greatly in that too. Our target at the moment is to do as well as possible in the next three matches. I came here to get Inter winning again and to build a great team."

Inter Campus visit Romania

BUCHAREST – The Inter Campus trip to Romania began in Ramnicu Valcea. Coaches Roberto Picardi and Paola Balconi headed up the team as they went to check in on the project and train local educators.

The scheme at the Ramnicu Valcea site is run in partnership with the Inima Pentru Inima foundation and works to improve social integration for 120 children. The majority of the youngsters live in orphanages or foster homes, having been victims of marginalisation, family violence or abandonment in the past. President of Inima Pentru Inima Lidia Dobre summed up perfectly the spirit of the time the Inter Campus staff spent with the children and local educators, as well as the project’s ethos as a whole: “Using football, Inter Campus has been able to break down social barriers. The kids in the institute feel no different to the ones in families, have received a lot of love and have realised that they too have a right to play.”

The delegation then travelled to Slatina, where Inter Campus works alongside Comunita Nuova and receives support locally from Pirelli Tyres Romania. Just like the other Inter Campus projects in the country, here the coaches are also very capable and aware of their responsibility towards the safe upbringing of the children involved, the majority of whom are from Roma backgrounds. As we visited the neighbourhood where they live, it was striking to see how different two areas of the same town can be. Fully-developing areas where the pace of life is quick stand alongside neighbourhoods that appear forgotten, a throwback to a by-gone era, made up of dirt roads and derelict housing.

The contrast is even stronger in Bucharest, the last leg on the Inter Campus tour. At first the centre of Bucharest seems just like any other city in Europe, with lovely old buildings, five-star hotels, bars, restaurants, top-end fashion boutiques and Christmas lights. But take a closer look and you see children living on the streets. These are the boys and girls that the Parada foundation has worked with for 20 years. Inter Campus has supported their efforts through football and education since 2012. Sergio Dalla Ca’ di Dio explained the conditions these youngsters live in: “These are children who live in awful conditions, by the canal or on the streets, surrounded by people with drug and alcohol problems. You need to grow up very quickly around here and so for them the chance to chase after a ball and have fun for 90 minutes – to behave like kids – is something incredible.”

Liverpool Transfer News: ‘Next Luis Suarez’ Jaime Baez Eyed by Brendan Rodgers

According to Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Soccerlens‘ Tamojitc), Liverpool are preparing to move for Uruguayan supertalent Jaime Baez, a striker already being compared to compatriot and former Reds great Luis Suarez.

Brendan Rodgers’ scouts have reportedly been monitoring the 19-year-old for quite some time now, and impressed by what they saw, the Reds are now preparing to move for the U20 international.

Baez burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 2012, dazzling Uruguay’s top division with a series of excellent performances for Juventud. This goal against Nacional caught the eye of plenty of scouts, as the youngster displayed all of his top assets in one swift move:

The forward has tremendous pace and a strong build, which allows him to do plenty of damage running at the defence. He has remarkable vision for a young player and is a natural finisher, and despite a lack of technical baggage he’s comfortable with the ball at his feet in close quarters.

Baez is far from a finished product, and with five goals in 13 matches in Uruguay’s top division, according to Soccerlens, it’s hard to envision him finding immediate success in the highly competitive Premier League.

His potential is obvious, however, and with the proper guidance, it’s not a stretch to believe he might one day come close to playing at the level that saw his Uruguayan predecessor become one of the most feared strikers in the world.

Paired with Divock Origi, who is currently on loan at Lille, the Reds’ attacking duo might even resemble the pair of Suarez and Daniel Sturridge during the 2013-14 season, terrorising just about every defence they faced.

It’s far too early to get carried away, however—Baez hasn’t even signed yet, and as of right now, his allure is built around his potential and little more.

The Reds will face competition in the race for the signature of another striker, as La Provence (h/t talkSPORT) claims Galatasaray and Inter Milan are also eyeing Olympique Marseille‘s Andre-Pierre Gignac.

The 29-year-old will be a free agent at the end of this season and is expected to leave his current club. According to WhoScored.com, he has scored 11 goals in just 16 appearances in 2014-15.

Italian media recently suggested he could be on the move in January, but the forward ruled out a transfer this winter in an interview with FcInterNews.it (h/t Football Italia):

I told the Italian journalists that everything depends on the conditions which will determine whether I’ll renew my contract or not. That’s why the media in Milan flared up. But first of all I’d like to know if the Coach is going to be staying, it’s an important factor when considering whether to renew.

[…] I still have great things to do with this club. All the more so if we can reach some targets for the supporters by the end of the season.

My priority is still Marseille and its President, as I always said, and this won’t be changing now.

If Marseille will choose not to renew my contract or will not be able to, or if the Coach will leave – these are important things to consider when making my final choice. There is no way that I will be leaving in the winter.

Bleacher Report UK’s Jonathan Johnson heard him make a similar statement after the match against Lorient, as all signs point toward his future depending heavily on that of manager Marcelo Bielsa:

The Argentine manager has guided Marseille to the top of the Ligue 1 table, and as of right now, he appears to be a safe bet to stay with the club for the foreseeable future.

Gignac is on pace to smash his personal best for goals in a season, via WhoScored, so it’s easy to see why he would be keen to continue his career under Bielsa. The fact he has never scored more than 16 goals in a single Ligue 1 campaign suggests this season may not be representative of his actual quality.

The former Toulouse man seems unlikely to move in January, and given Liverpool’s need for quality at the striker position, Rodgers may choose to look in a different direction. Bleacher Report UK’s Ryan Bailey and Matt Ladson have so far been unimpressed with the attacking reinforcements the Northern Irishman has brought in:

The Reds have plenty of bodies up front—adding another good, not great player won’t help the team when Sturridge returns from injury. While Gignac would be a nice option as a free agent at the end of the season, the reported interest from several other clubs means the price could be driven up should he decide to move on from Marseille.

Liverpool need help in January, and it doesn’t look like Gignac will be available at that time. With Origi returning from Lille during the summer, Rodgers may have no need for another striker ahead of the 2015-16 season.
