Inter Milan confirmed the departure of Robert Mancini as their manager on Monday with Frank de Boer set to succeed the Italian at the San Siro. 

The Nerazzurri released a statement on their official website in which they thanked Mancini, 51, after his second spell in charge at the club:

F.C. Internazionale Milano confirms that it has parted company with head coach Roberto Mancini by mutual agreement.

Inter would like to place on record its thanks to Roberto for the work carried out with the team since joining in November 2014.

Last season the Club led Serie A until the Christmas break, ending the season in fourth place and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

We thank Roberto for the work and commitment he has shown the Club over the past 20 months.

Per the Evening Standard‘s James Cann, former Ajax manager De Boer is “poised” to take up the top job at Inter having parted ways with the Dutch giants in May.

According to BBC Sport’s Simon Stone, De Boer will be installed at the San Siro on a three-year deal:

Mancini took over at Inter from Walter Mazzarri having previously won three Serie A titles at the helm between 2004 and 2008.

He led them to an eighth-place Serie A finish in 2014-15 before improving to fourth last term.

Despite the improvement, though, Mancini’s relationship with new club owners Suning Holdings is reported to have broken down over the summer, leading to his departure, per Cann.

Inter’s poor results in pre-season—they have lost heavily to Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain—are unlikely to have helped his cause.

De Boer has been linked with a number of roles since he left Ajax, notably the vacant Everton and Southampton jobs that were subsequently taken by Ronald Koeman and Claude Puel, respectively, per Joe Mewis in the Mirror.

He has forged a fine reputation in his five-and-a-half-year spell as Ajax boss, winning an unprecedented four consecutive Eredivisie titles from 2010, per Opta:

De Boer could only finish second to PSV Eindhoven with the Amsterdam outfit in 2014-15 and 2015-16 and will surely be relishing a new challenge.

He will have a tough task on his hands as Inter look to return to the top of Italian football again, but the 46-year-old has proven himself to be a canny operator and has every chance to succeed in Serie A.
