Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Romelu Lukaku, Wesley Sneijder Rumours

Chelsea‘s pursuit of Michy Batshuayi has reportedly seen them end their interest in re-signing Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, potentially paving the way for Manchester United to sign him.

According to the Daily Star‘s Jonathan Green, the Blues will no longer be pursuing Lukaku once Batshuayi is confirmed, while United have been monitoring him for some time.

Further, the Belgian’s agent is Mino Raiola, who also represents Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, meaning the Red Devils “could hold an advantage in any battle for his signature” as Raiola is also reportedly working on the other two signing for United.

Last season, United frequently failed to produce the kind of attacking football they displayed in the days of Sir Alex Ferguson—rather than quick, exciting and clinical play, they were too often slow, unimaginative and wasteful.

With Wayne Rooney transitioning into midfield, United also had few forward options and netted just 49 goals.

Lukaku bagged 18 in the league and 25 in all competitions, so it’s of little surprise he’s attracting interest. As WhoScored.com noted, the 23-year-old has been one of the most clinical finishers in the English top flight in recent times:

However, Green reports the Toffees could require a £65 million fee for him, and that’s a huge sum for a player who’s still not the complete package.

He failed to score in his final 10 games last season, and he too often lets himself down with a poor pass or first touch or goes missing entirely.

FourFourTwo‘s Seb Stafford-Bloor believes he’d be better off staying at Goodison Park:

Lukaku is still an excellent player with plenty of room to improve, but such a fee is too high for a player who still needs to develop.

Meanwhile, Turkish outlet Aksam (h/t James Cambridge of the Express) reported that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder, but the Turkish club want Marouane Fellaini in exchange.

As United fans will attest, the Dutchman being linked with Old Trafford is nothing new—per Cambridge, speculation he could join the club has lasted “for a number of years.”

Sneijder enjoyed a successful spell with Mourinho at Inter Milan and would have made a fantastic signing for United in his heyday.

Good on the ball, creative and a goal threat from distance, the Netherlands international is an excellent playmaker and enjoyed a fairly strong season for Galatasaray last year, scoring five goals and assisting 10 in all competitions.

However, he’s now 32, so a move seems highly unlikely at this point. United could do with getting rid of the slow, ill-disciplined and often ineffectual Fellaini, but not in this manner.

Vincenzo Montella Can Bring Style and Substance to AC Milan

After weeks of uncertainty and speculation, AC Milan concluded their search for a new head coach on Wednesday morning by appointing Vincenzo Montella.

A statement on the decision, via the club’s official website, read as follows:

Vincenzo has signed a two-year contract which begins on July 1. It is the belief of the club that the style of play of the new Rossoneri coach will be the basis of an important, fruitful and positive collaboration. Heartfelt thanks to Cristian Brocchi for the enthusiasm, preparation and intensity with which he approached his career as Milan coach with the Allievi, the Primavera and the first team.

Montella enjoyed a fine career as a player, including a 10-year spell with Roma during which he found the net 84 times. He was nicknamed The Little Aeroplane for his goal celebration and won 20 caps for Italy.

His first break in coaching came with the Giallorossi’s under-15 side in 2009. Two years later he was appointed interim first-team coach following the resignation of Claudio Ranieri, sparking a brief upturn in results before the club decided to hire Luis Enrique.

Montella then moved on to Catania, enjoying a positive year with the Sicilian outfit before taking hold of the reins at Fiorentina. He spent three successful seasons with the Viola but was sacked last summer after comments he made about the club were deemed to be disrespectful.

At that point he was rumoured to be on Milan’s shortlist for their impending head coach vacancy, per Goal’s Peter Hanson.

The Rossoneri were in need of someone with an established reputation after failing to make progress under the inexperienced Clarence Seedorf and Filippo Inzaghi, but they eventually settled on Sinisa Mihajlovic. Montella ended up at Sampdoria.

But, while Milan finally had a reputable coach at the helm last season, results barely improved and the football was dour.

Mihajlovic brought with him his favoured 4-3-1-2 formation and an authoritative air, but the team’s play under his auspices was slow and unexciting. Subsequently, when the wins dried up he was dismissed and replaced temporarily by former Primavera boss Brocchi.

Following the Serb’s dismissal, club president Silvio Berlusconi stated in a Facebook post (h/t Football Italia) that, “Milan must return to a style of play and results worthy of our history.” Clearly the club wants aesthetic improvement as much as it needs moving up the Serie A table and, in this respect, Montella’s appointment makes perfect sense.

Fiorentina were one of the most entertaining teams in Italy last season under Paulo Sousa’s leadership, though it can be argued that the groundwork for their way of playing was first laid down by the Portuguese’s predecessor.

During his three seasons with the Tuscan club, Montella implemented and refined a proactive, attacking style of play based on control of possession. He also showed versatility when it came to the shape of his team, utilising 3-4-3, 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 systems to good effect.

Viola Nation’s Chloe Beresford spoke to Bleacher Report about the coach’s methods with Fiorentina, saying:

I think very highly of Montella. He’s great at uniting the squad, developing young players and is tactically flexible, often changing the formation midway through the match. His style of football was always free-flowing and easy on the eye. With Borja Valero the driving force in midfield, the team scored some stunning goals.

Montella showed more of his tactical ideas with Sampdoria, where after initial experiments with a 4-3-1-2 shape he instituted a 3-4-2-1 which allowed him to make the most of his attacking midfield talents, including Joaquin Correa, Ricardo Alvarez and Roberto Soriano.

His short time with the Blucerchiati also evidenced glimpses of an innovative streak that was clear during his time at Fiorentina in multiple intriguing selection choices.

Montella played Joaquin as a wing-back, giving the Spaniard additional space to run into and utilise his exceptional dribbling skill and crossing ability. He also occasionally used Josip Ilicic as a false nine, enabling the negation of the Slovenian’s unwillingness to track back and perform defensive duties, instead emphasising the player’s technique and vision in attacking areas.

Fundamentally, he is the sort of tactician that Milan have needed for quite some timeone who is unafraid to explore new ideas, alter the team shape and individual roles and who proselytises an intricate, short-passing, attack-minded approach to the game.

And, although the Rossoneri played a more functional style under Mihajlovic and Brocchi’s respective tenures, there are some players in the squad who could be well suited to Montella’s methods.

While his distribution could be tidied up, 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is remarkably composed for his age and has shown willingness to be patient with the ball at feet. Alessio Romagnoli’s left foot is ideal for spraying passes out from defence to build play from deep, while full-backs Ignazio Abate, Mattia De Sciglio and Luca Antonelli are all comfortable when venturing forward.

In midfield, Riccardo Montolivo, Andrea Bertolacci, Manuel Locatelli and Giacomo Bonaventura are better on the ball than they are off it and each possesses the flair, close control and passing range to flourish under Montella’s guidance. Meanwhile, up front, Carlos Bacca should relish playing in a more creative team where his sole responsibilities are to make intelligent runs and finish chances.

For other players, the future may not be so bright. Cumbersome centre-back Cristian Zapata will not satisfy the need for assured build-up from the back, midfielders Juraj Kucka and Jose Mauri will need to provide more than their usual dynamism while striker Luiz Adriano lacks the guile to lead the line effectively.

Undoubtedly, then, there is still a lot of work to do with the squad, but Montella has a knack for teambuilding. With Fiorentina he had to deal with the constant sale of his best playersMontolivo and Matija Nastasic in 2012-13, Stevan Jovetic and Adem Ljajic in 2013-14, and Juan Cuadrado in 2014-15.

Despite the constant flight of talent, he assembled a team that not only played attractive football but won games. After finishing 13th the season prior to his arrival, Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A in each of his three terms in the dugout. They also reached the Coppa Italia final in 2014 and the Europa League semi-finals in 2015.

Montella wasn’t able to achieve the same levels of success with Sampdoria, though that had more to do with his lack of time in the job. In addition, the club sold their top scorer Eder to Inter Milan in January, forcing the coach to once again re-jig his tactics.

In Milan, however, the 42-year-old looks to have found the sort of project he has been searching for since leaving Fiorentina.

According to La Repubblica (h/t Calciomercato), a Chinese consortium is set to acquire an 80 per cent stake in the club, something which may lead to fresh investment. This could potentially enable spending money in the transfer market on players who fit the new coach’s philosophy, something he is not willing to compromise.

He discussed this in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Alessio Da Ronch (h/t Gazzetta World), saying: “I don’t believe in formations, instead I look at strategies, and those can change. I believe in a philosophy as it is key to have one. You pick one and move forward with it, or else you will just create confusion. … Continuity, in the long run, has its advantages.”

Finally, after several years of false dawns, it appears that Milan have a coach with concrete ideals who they can trust not just to deliver results, but an entertaining brand of football.

Chelsea Transfer News: Latest on Leonardo Bonucci and Antonio Candreva Rumours

Premier League titans Chelsea and Manchester City will reportedly duel to sign Leonardo Bonucci, but Juventus are said to have told both clubs the defender is not for sale. Elsewhere, Inter Milan have had a bid rejected for Chelsea target Antonio Candreva.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, both Chelsea and Manchester City have been warned off making a move for Italy centre-back Bonucci (h/t CalcioMercato.com).

The report mentioned Juve will “refuse any offers” that come their way as incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte looks to his former club for reinforcements in west London.

The ex-Juve chief won three Serie A titles with Bonucci at the heart of his back line, and the 29-year-old has established himself as arguably Italy’s best defender, which OptaPaolo recently helped illustrate:

Conte’s success with the Old Lady was built on a stern defence first and foremost, but with Chelsea veteran John Terry edging toward the end of his Blues career, he may not find as talented a stable in west London.

The report added inbound Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is “known for being a big fan” of Bonucci, but Gianluca Di Marzio translator David Amoyal presented perhaps the biggest factor stopping any deal:

As long as Bonucci remains happy in Turin, and the team are still winning titles, tempting him away from Turin seems like a near-impossible task, given the status he boasts in his current setting.

Juve’s defensive trio of Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini have been dubbed the “BBC,” a spin on Real Madrid‘s own holy triumvirate of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Alvaro Morata recently left Turin for Madrid, and he had high praise for his former Juve team-mates, per Spanish daily Marca (h/t Sport):

[Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiellini] are the best defenders in the world for how they defend – teams don’t want to play against them.

When they play together as a three, it’s almost impossible to score a goal.

Scoring goals in Italy is much more difficult. They’re experts in defending.

In Spain, you get seven clean chances to receive the ball and score. In Italy, you have only a few clear balls and must hit the target to score.

Elsewhere, Amoyal reported for Di Marzio that Inter’s €18 million (£15 million) bid for Lazio winger Candreva has been rejected, although the Nerazurri are likely to return with an improved offer.

The Sun‘s Antony Kastrinakis recently reported the Blues were eyeing a £25 million move for Candreva, who has had a very positive impact in the international setup under Conte:

The Azzurri head coach will undoubtedly have a firm understanding of how the Eagles flyer operates, and Candreva may be seen as a realistic option after Lazio finished eighth in Serie A last season.

According to Amoyal, Inter manager Roberto Mancini is “always pressing” in his hunt to land Candreva, but the allure of a lucrative move to the Premier League could turn his head in England’s direction.

Barcelona Transfer News: Aleix Vidal Targeted by Inter, Latest Blaugrana Rumours

Inter Milan have reportedly made contact with Barcelona regarding the availability of Aleix Vidal, while Blaugrana president Josep Maria Bartomeu is said to be looking at a number of reinforcements during the summer transfer window, including La Liga stars Denis Suarez and Kevin Gameiro.

According to Sky Italia (h/t Calciomercato.com), Barcelona still want to sign Arsenal starlet Hector Bellerin to replace right-back Dani Alves, who is set to sign for Juventus, and that would leave Vidal as the odd man out. Napoli and AC Milan are reportedly also keeping an eye on the situation.

The 26-year-old made just 14 appearances last season but could replace Alves as Barcelona’s choice right-back. Inter have already signed Caner Erkin and Cristian Ansaldi, but a loan move for Vidal could still be an option.

The Spaniard signed for Barcelona last summer but couldn’t make his debut for the club until January due to the Catalans’ transfer embargo. He showed flashes of his talent in the second half of the season, but he was never able to usurp Alves as the starter at the right-back position.

Sergi Roberto emerged as one of the club’s top breakout performers last season, and while his best displays came in midfield, he has experience at full-back and could be groomed as the club’s top option if Bellerin stays in north London.

If not, Vidal would be a solid choice for Barcelona―he was considered one of Spain’s best right-backs not too long ago for a reason. Here’s a look at some of his highlights from his last season with Sevilla:

Vidal is a safe, solid option, but he’s not the sort of world-class talent people have come to associate with the Blaugrana. Bellerin could be such a player, but he’s highly unlikely to leave Arsenal this summer and still needs a lot of seasoning before he can be considered world-class.

Inter tried their luck with a loan deal for Barcelona’s Martin Montoya last year, and that move fell flat in a hurry, so one has to wonder whether another shot at a loan is such a wise idea. Barcelona could use Vidal as a versatile depth option or even a starter if the plan is to keep Roberto in midfield for now.

Meanwhile, Sport‘s Juan Manuel Diaz reported Bartomeu is looking at a number of La Liga players as possible reinforcements for the upcoming season. Among those considered is Suarez, who is set to return to the club in July after a strong spell with Villarreal.

The 22-year-old helped the Yellow Submarine to a spot in next year’s UEFA Champions League and continued his remarkable development, and there was little doubt the Catalans would use their buy-back option on him.

Here’s a look at some of his highlights:

Others made the list as well, including Nolito, who seems set to join Manchester City, and Las Palmas defender Mauricio Lemos. But Sevilla‘s Gameiro stands out as the other big fish on the list, although a transfer seems unlikely.

Per the report, two huge roadblocks stand in the way of a move. First, there’s the Frenchman’s €40 million release clause, which is too rich for Barcelona’s blood. Sevilla have already made it clear he won’t leave for less—a steep fee for a player who would be a backup behind Luis Suarez.

New Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli also has no intention of moving Gameiro, so negotiating with the Andalusians will be anything but pleasant.

Per WhoScored.com, Gameiro scored 16 La Liga goals last season, but he was controversially left out of France’s UEFA Euro 2016 squad. The snub could push him toward the Sevilla exit door in search of a bigger, more high-profile club and renewed chances with the French national team.

Chelsea Transfer News: Axel Witsel Eyed Amid Radja Nainggolan 3rd Bid Rumours

Chelsea will reportedly look to Belgium for midfield inspiration this summer after it emerged the Blues are seeking Axel Witsel’s signature and are “ready to make a third bid” for AS Roma‘s Radja Nainggolan.

Witsel could arrive instead of Nainggolan, however, after Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb reported the Zenit St. Petersburg anchor may be a cut-price alternative, but a list of Italian giants are also in pursuit.

Serie A champions Juventus are said to be among those chasing the 27-year-old, while Napoli, Inter Milan and AC Milan are also part of the chase for a star who could possess great value this summer.

That’s largely due to the fact Witsel has only a year remaining on his contract at Zenit, and Russian football expert Artur Petrosyan recently expanded upon how much the midfield ace will cost any suitor:

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic failed to hit his previous heights at Stamford Bridge last season, and incoming head coach Antonio Conte may see the Serb’s former Benfica team-mate, Witsel, as an upgrade in the engine room.

Witsel has previously spoken positively of a move to Italy and addressed rumours he could move to the Premier League, per Goal’s David Manuca:

Russia was a nice adventure, but it’s time for me to change. I don’t know whether I’ll go to the Premier League or to Serie A.

Italian football fascinates me and at 27 it would be the right move. [AC] Milan had looked for me, it’s true, but that’s a story from a long time ago. Now the only thing I’m thinking of is Euro 2016. The next step is to beat Sweden.

Belgium are now through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 and have impressed of late with a midfield pairing of Witsel and Nainggolan largely running things from the middle of the park. And according to the Mirror‘s Darren Lewis, Chelsea will register a third bid for the latter this week, but Roma are understood to be demanding a figure of £31 million for their star.

Despite the fact the west Londoners have the funding necessary to complete a move at that price, it’s unknown whether Chelsea see value in a move costing that sum.

There’s also the fact Nainggolan seems content in the Italian capital, although Fabrizio Romano of the Guardian has insisted Conte is a big fan of the Serie A ace:

Conte will have personal knowledge of the Belgian bruiser from his time at the helm of sides like Juventus, Siena and Atalanta, with Nainggolan having established himself as one of the most consistent midfield forces in Serie A.

It seems likely Chelsea will look to recruit at least one of the Belgian playmakers this summer, but the heady competition for both Witsel and Nainggolan may yet see the English giants pushed out of a deal.

Italy vs. Spain: Live Stream, Odds and Form Guide for Euro 2016

Two UEFA Euro 2016 heavyweights collide on Monday, as Italy take on defending champions Spain at the Stade de France, Saint-Denis, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Spain came through Group D as runners-up after a final-round defeat to Croatia, while Italy topped Group E at the expense of Belgium.

The prizeor punishment, arguablyfor the victors in Paris is a last-eight meeting with Germany, who thrashed Slovakia 3-0 in Lille on Sunday evening.

Date: Monday June 27

Time: 12 p.m. ET/5 p.m. BST

Venue: Stade de France, Saint-Denis, Paris

TV Info: ESPN 2 (U.S.)/BBC One (U.K.)

Live Stream: ESPN Go (U.S.)/BBC iPlayer (U.K.)

When two of the biggest footballing nations collide, you can always expect a fiery and tight encounter, and Monday’s meeting is no different.

According to Oddschecker, Spain are the favourites to win the match, with odds of 21-20, while Italy are 16-5. The odds for a draw after 90 minutes are short, at 2-1.

Spain kicked off Euro 2016 looking like a side capable of going all the way, with impressive displays against the Czech Republic and Turkey.

However, the 2-1 defeat to Croatia to round off the group stage has pundits wondering whether the Spanish have what it takes to win three European Championships on the spin.

If they do find a way past Italy, they’ll likely need to break down a solid back line. Fortunately, they have a striker in form who’s more than up to the task.

Alvaro Morata has scored three goals in the competition so far, including a brace against Turkey, and he’s 4-1 to score first against the Italians.

And according to Azzurri goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, that could be a wise bet, as he recognised just how dangerous Morata is, via Italy’s official Twitter account:

Antonio Conte’s men, meanwhile, will look to catch Spain on the break, with the pace of Eder likely to cause plenty of problems. The Inter Milan star is 9-1 to break the deadlock in Saint-Denis.

Both sides have a wealth of attacking talent at their disposal, which means there could be plenty of goals. Even though Italy haven’t been involved in a high-scoring game at Euro 2016 yet, both teams to score in 90 minutes is a tempting 11-8.

In fact, the Italians come into Monday’s clash off the back of a defeat at the hands of the Republic of Ireland and have scored just three goals in the tournament.

Conte named a heavily changed side against the Irish, though, and their odds of 6-4 to qualify for the quarter-finals are generous.

The Italians are notoriously stubborn against bigger sides, and they’ll look to frustrate Spain and snatch a winner on the break.

The match going to the lottery of a penalty shootout would favour Italy, and it’s 4-1 to go the distance and give Buffon the chance to be a hero.

It’s all set to be a thrilling encounter at the Stade de France as we reach the business end of Euro 2016.

The big games are coming thick and fast, and the winners of Monday’s clash face another gruelling task against world champions Germany in the last eight.

Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Marko Pjaca Rumours, Sadio Mane Deal Reported

More potential suitors are reportedly emerging for Liverpool transfer target Marko Pjaca, as Juventus are said to be talking to the young talent, while Sadio Mane’s move to Anfield is moving ever closer, with the two clubs agreeing to a £30 million deal.

According to Alessandra Stefanelli of TuttoMercatoWeb.com, the Bianconeri have contacted the entourage of Pjaca, one of the top breakout stars of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.

AC Milan, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund are all reportedly keeping an eye on the 21-year-old.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Metro‘s Mark Brus) previously reported Liverpool had already launched a £12 million offer, which was rejected by his current club, Dinamo Zagreb. His agent has been talking up a transfer, revealing there has been plenty of interest from foreign clubs, via MilanNews.it (h/t Football Italia).

Here’s a look at the player all those clubs are reportedly vying for:

Pjaca rose to attention with a couple of fine performances during Euro 2016, stealing the show in the 2-1 win over Spain. The winger, who can also play as a second striker or attacking midfielder, stood out with his raw athletic ability and dribbling, routinely beating his marker throughout the tournament.

He was left on the bench in the 1-0 loss against Portugal until late in the match, a decision that didn’t sit well with BT Sport’s James Horncastle:

While he’s still a young and raw prospect, Pjaca showed remarkable maturity during Euro 2016, and it’s easy to see why top clubs are interested. Dinamo have a superb reputation for nurturing talent, and their top prospects usually go on to make a big impact when they do make the move out west.

Elsewhere, it’s reported Southampton star Mane is set to take a medical before completing a £30 million move to Liverpool, handing manager Jurgen Klopp the attacking help he desired during the summer transfer window.

According to MailOnline’s Dominic King, he has been given “permission” to travel to Anfield to complete the deal. Per the report, personal terms have yet to be agreed.

Mane has been heavily linked with Liverpool these last few weeks, as it became clear Klopp was determined to add the speedy and versatile forward to his squad.

The Senegal international shares many of the same traits Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did when he joined Borussia Dortmund in 2013, and he finished the 2015-16 Premier League season in fantastic form, scoring six goals for the Saints in his last five outings.

Per Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool Echo, the 24-year-old carries some risks, but he should be a solid fit for Klopp‘s high-paced, counter-attacking style of play:

In short, Mane creates and scores goals. He scored 15 in all competitions in 2015-16, following up from the 10 he notched in his debut season at Southampton. His arrival would add extra threat to the attack.

[…] He can struggle for consistency, as evidenced by being relegated to the bench for a period under (Ronald) Koeman – though that, also, had roots in his desire to move in January. Capable of moments of magic, he can also go through periods without making an impact.

The reported fee of £30 million is steep for a player who scored just 11 Premier League goals last season and endured a 16-match scoring slump. Consistency is a major issue with Mane, even if some of his struggles can be attributed to his obvious wish to move to a bigger club, as Walsh rightly pointed out.

Some fans will also not be happy Klopp will continue the trend of buying Southampton players, as the Daily Mirror‘s Liam Canning noted:

Mane and Klopp deserve the benefit of the doubt, however. The German built a phenomenal reputation for recognising and developing talent during his time with Dortmund, and based on his track record, there’s every reason to believe he can unlock the superstar potential Mane clearly possesses.

Canning agreed he could be a special talent if he finds some consistency, something Klopp should be able to help him with:

If the deal becomes official, Klopp will have two ultra-athletic forwards he can pair together or move around in his squad, as Divock Origi also showed plenty of promise during the second half of last season.

A healthy Daniel Sturridge should lead the attack, but the England international can’t seem to shake the injury bug―Mane will add some much needed depth.

Experienced, Premier League-proven strikers always come at a premium, and while £30 million is a big investment, Mane could well be considered a steal in two or three years if Klopp works his magic.
