Jose Mourinho Reportedly in PSG Manager Talks Amid Manchester United Rumours

Jose Mourinho has reportedly held talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the possibility of replacing manager Laurent Blanc this summer, meaning Manchester United could be set to lose out unless they enter the fray soon.

That’s according to the Daily Mail‘s Sami Mokbel, who reported Mourinho “wants a deal agreed by next week,” so if United do not make the decision to replace Louis van Gaal shortly after Saturday’s FA Cup final they may find the top candidate to replace him has gone to the French capital.

Mokbel wrote that current PSG boss Laurent Blanc could be at risk of being replaced due to the club’s persistent failure to make a significant impact on the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League—something Mourinho has experience in having lifted the trophy with Porto and Inter Milan.

While the lack of competitiveness in Ligue 1 could be off-putting for some managers—Les Parisiens won the league by 31 points this year—the virtual guarantee of trophies and huge resources available for transfers could tempt Mourinho to go there.

Further, barring a return to another of his former clubs, there are only a relatively small handful of teams left in European football that Mourinho might perceive to be big enough to consider joining—and fewer still that would realistically appoint him at this moment in time based on either the job their current boss is doing or his former allegiances.

Per Sky Sports News HQ, the Special One has confirmed he has not yet made an agreement with any club to take over this summer:

Even if United are able to lift the FA Cup under the Dutchman, missing out on Mourinho could be a huge blow to their chances of success next season.

The Red Devils have all-but missed out on Champions League football, and the ponderous, unimaginative play they’ve produced in midfield and up front has seemingly left a great deal of the Old Trafford faithful wanting more.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News believes Van Gaal’s underachievement must necessitate his exit from the club:

With Pep Guardiola taking charge at Manchester City, Antonio Conte at Chelsea and the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and West Ham United likely to improve again—not to mention champions Leicester City—United look set to be left behind if Van Gaal is in charge next season.

Football writer Liam Canning believes as much:

Bringing in Mourinho soon after the FA Cup final would require decisive action on the part of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward—the kind he has seemingly been reluctant to take during his tenure at the club—but if the club won’t be keeping Van Gaal there is sense in moving quickly so as to give the new manager more time ahead of next year.

However, there will be other factors to consider—such as the payout the 64-year-old will receive if he’s relieved of his duties this summer—so if United do aim to bring in Mourinho they will need to strike a balance between securing him before PSG and handling Van Gaal’s exit correctly.

Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Urged to Spend Amid Zlatan Ibrahimovic Rumours

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has urged Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to spend during the summer transfer window or risk falling behind Spurs, while Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has told reporters he already knows where he’ll be playing his football next season.

The Gunners passed rivals Tottenham in the Premier League standings on the final day of the season, but Redknapp believes Arsenal were “lucky” to do so and will have to improve greatly over the summer to stay ahead of Spurs.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, he stated his beliefs that Spurs’ squad has better long-term potential and that the Gunners will have to sign at least two players to keep up:

Arsene Wenger deserves enormous credit for finishing above Tottenham Hotspur in the league, but I know which squad I would rather have.

Being brutally honest, Arsenal are very lucky to have finished the season second and Arsene needs to buy some players over the summer to get anywhere near Spurs. …

Arsenal need to buy, there is a lot of work to do. They desperately need a new centre-half and another striker to take them forward. Too many times this season they’ve been suspect in certain areas, whereas I can’t see any real weaknesses in the Spurs team.

No less than five Tottenham players made England’s provisional squad for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2016 tournament, compared to just one Arsenal star—Jack Wilshere, who spent the bulk of the season out with an injury and isn’t expected to start for the team.

While the Gunners field more international stars than Spurs, Tottenham’s amount of young talent is impressive, and if not for a late-season collapse that came with a handful of suspensions, Spurs would have finished the campaign ahead of their rivals.

Arsenal fans want their club to spend after a season that saw few star players arrive at the Emirates Stadium, and a player like Ibrahimovic would be a welcome sight.

The Daily Star’s Jack Wilson previously reported Wenger was prepared to sign the free-agent-to-be this summer, and the veteran has now told BeIN Sports (h/t Daily Mirror’s Liam Corless) that he has already made a decision on his future: “I know where I will be going next season, but I will not be saying where tonight.”

Ibrahimovic has been frequently linked with a move to Manchester United or the MLS, but with his contract set to expire, any club willing to offer him the substantial wages he’ll likely request has to be regarded as a possible destination.

Not everyone believes the Gunners should add the 34-year-old, including former Gunner and current Daily Mail pundit Martin Keown:

But the Gunners haven’t won a Premier League title in years, and winning domestic titles is what Ibrahimovic does best. He has already done so with Ajax, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSG, and his winning mentality is something the club could use dearly.

The same holds true for his scoring prowess. Here’s a look at some of his highlights:

Signing veteran players to big contracts is always risky, but after years of relatively conservative spending, the Gunners can afford to take some risks if it improves the club’s chances of winning silverware.

Ibrahimovic is still a world-class finisher with elite production—five goals and three assists in this year’s UEFA Champions League, per WhoScored.com—who would add a whole new dynamic to Arsenal’s attack. And with no transfer fees involved, this is a move Wenger has to consider, if he still has the option of signing Ibrahimovic.

Liverpool Transfer News: Loris Karius, Jeison Murillo, Mario Gotze Rumours

Liverpool will reportedly make a summer bid to bring Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius to Anfield, amid doubts over Simon Mignolet‘s ability to remain the club’s No. 1 next season.

German publication Bild (h/t Metro‘s Lee Thomas-Mason) has stated Reds boss Jurgen Kloppis looking for reinforcements after witnessing his current first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet make a number of high-profile errors despite signing a new long-term deal earlier this season.”

One of his targets is Karius, a 22-year-old ‘keeper with a €10 million release clause in his contract. That would be a bargain fee to secure one of the brightest young talents in Germany.

Such a deal would also give Liverpool a viable alternative to Mignolet, who has struggled at times this season. Back in April, a report from Alistair Tweedale of the Daily Telegraph named the Belgian as the most error-prone goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Mignolet has been erratic domestically, but the former Sunderland man has also impressed during Liverpool’s run to this season’s UEFA Europa League final. Klopp has already shown confidence in him once by handing the 28-year-old stopper a new five-year contract back in January.

While Mignolet may need some strong competition for next season, it’s not exactly clear Klopp is ready to give up on him as Liverpool’s No. 1 just yet.

Inter Milan Defender Jeison Murillo Linked

One change Klopp may want to make is in defence, where he is said to want to add Inter Milan ace Jeison Murillo, according to the People (h/t Alex Wood of the Daily Star). The same report also stated Liverpool will face competition for the £22 million-rated South American from Premier League champions Leicester City.

Klopp could certainly use some extra pace at the back. He’s managed to revive the form of Dejan Lovren, but the position next to the Croatian centre-back remains a question mark.

Kolo Toure is 35, while Martin Skrtel’s future looks uncertain. Andy Kelly of the Liverpool Echo has seemed to suggest the 31-year-old Slovakian could be playing his football elsewhere next season:

Mamadou Sakho is currently serving a UEFA-imposed ban while European football’s governing body investigates a doping violation that could carry a lengthier ban, per Sky Sports.

So Klopp‘s need to sign a talented centre-back this summer is clear in this context. But he may have to look elsewhere based on Murillo’s apparent desire to stay in Italy.

Earlier in the season, the player told Rai Sport (h/t Wood): “I want to stay at Inter. I am an Inter player and am not thinking about the future right now.”

Klopp may have to expand his search for defensive reinforcements beyond this rugged and talented Colombian.

Mario Gotze Confirms Bayern Munich Talks

One of Klopp‘s former players and reported targets, Mario Gotze, has confirmed he’s held talks with Bayern Munich about his future.

Specifically, World Cup winner Gotze stated he’s spoken with incoming Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti, per German publication Bild (h/t Goal.com’s Stefan Coerts). But Gotze didn’t get into specifics about what the conversation means for his immediate future: “I can’t make any promises about next season. I have an ongoing contract, and we will see what happens.”

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo had reported how Ancelotti is willing to sell Gotze this summer. Pearce also revealed how “Klopp is keen to bring the Germany international to Anfield this summer with the Reds hoping to wrap up a deal for around £20 million.”

Klopp knows the player well having developed him at Borussia Dortmund. Gotze‘s trickery, flair and eye for a pass fit the fluid brand of football his former chief is now preaching at Anfield.

There’s a sense of inevitability about this deal, with the connection between player and manager likely a decisive factor. Gotze would add some star power to what’s already an intriguing attack featuring Brazilian schemers Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

But it’s issues at the back that seem likely to dominate the agenda for Klopp this summer. Identifying the right competition for Mignolet, while adding the right partner for Lovren, should be his priorities.

Marseille the Final Challenge for Zlatan Ibrahimovic at End of His PSG Career

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Parc des Princes farewell went as well as the super Swede could have hoped on Saturday, if not better.

Two goals, a new record in Paris Saint-Germain’s straightforward 4-0 win over FC Nantes and being centre of attention from the hours before kick-off to the moment he decided to leave the pitch with his two sons after scoring his record-breaking goal—it was the perfect send-off for the 34-year-old.

Through an individual pre-match introduction to tifos in the crowd and a pause after 10 minutes of the game—in reference to Ibrahimovic’s shirt number—the PSG supporters were able to pay tribute to the man who has pushed the capital club so far since his arrival back in 2012.

The talismanic marksman admitted to reporters after the final whistle that the outpouring of gratitude from Les Parisiens’ fans—combined with the presence of his children on the pitch with him at the end—brought tears to his eyes:

I know what I will do next year but I won’t tell you. I am very excited tonight; I’ve had four fantastic years here. This is a fantastic group; it’s even the best group I’ve played with. I will miss this team.

We’re proud of what we’ve done. The club will remain in my heart. I hope they will continue to win because the project is huge. I’m not worried.

It was a beautiful night; it was hard to describe what I experienced. I never cry usually, but when I saw my children come on, I had tears in my eyes. I am very grateful to the French people. I had to give them the best of myself.

With Carlos Bianchi’s 1977-78 record of 37 Ligue 1 goals bettered and Ibrahimovic’s emotional Parc des Princes farewell done, it is time for the curtain call.

It is fitting it should come against Olympique de Marseille, PSG’s bitter rivals and one of the Scandinavian superstar’s favoured opponents, in the Coupe de France final at Stade de France on Saturday.

Zlatan is already a hero for the French capital outfit, but his final match for the club gives him the chance to add one final layer to his PSG legacy.

Already the top scorer in the fixture known as Le Classique with nine goals across all competitions, the former AC Milan, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Ajax and Malmo FF man has the chance to hit double figures and beat Marseille one last time before departing.

With l’OM in such poor recent form, despite a small recovery under caretaker boss Franck Passi, it appears to be the ideal time to produce a memorable thrashing of Les Phoceens that would live long in the memory of PSG supporters.

Not only does Ibrahimovic have personal gains to be made in the Coupe de France final, but there is also collective achievement at stake.

If the Sweden international can help to lead Les Parisiens to victory at Stade de France, it will complete a second consecutive domestic clean sweep.

Until last season, that was something that had never been done before in French football. Now it has already been achieved once, doing it one final time would emphasise Zlatan and PSG’s sheer dominance of the football landscape in France.

After the Marseille clash, that will be it for the towering striker and his employers. All that will be left to do is bid farewell to France during this summer’s UEFA European Championship before moving on to his next challenge—wherever and whatever that might be.

Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Alvaro Morata, Gabriel Jesus Rumours

Real Madrid have reportedly decided to activate Alvaro Morata’s buy-back clause for the purpose of selling him on, and the player is said to favour a move to Manchester United should Jose Mourinho become the Red Devils’ new manager. Meanwhile, Juventus have reportedly made an offer for Palmeiras starlet Gabriel Jesus.

Morata’s future has been hotly debated for months, and speculation has heated up significantly in the last few weeks. Per the Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano and Marcus Christenson, Real have now decided to exercise their buy-back clause of £23.6 million, and they’ll want roughly £40 million to sell the Spain international.

A host of clubs are said to be interested, including the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester City, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain, but according to the report, Morata’s first choice would be to work under his former manager Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Mourinho gave him his first-team debut at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, and Morata has always praised the former Chelsea boss. Speaking about the Portuguese manager, he said: “Mourinho could have chosen some other player but he chose me and I’ll be grateful to him for the rest of my life.”

Morata still has to sign off on any move—he could even decide against moving back to Real—but he’s not expected to make life difficult on Los Blancos. According to Calciomercato (h/t Football Italia), Real have already prepared the necessary paperwork, although a deal will have to wait until the transfer window opens.

Here’s a look at why so many clubs are reportedly interested in the 23-year-old:

Per WhoScored.com, Morata’s statistics aren’t spectacular, but Juventus use the Spaniard as a mobile target man and expect him to harass defenders and keep hold of the ball, more than to score. Attacking partner Paulo Dybala and the advancing midfielders will run into the gaps Morata generates and convert the chances the former Real man creates.

His stunning performance against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League was a perfect example of the role he’s played in Turin. Morata proved a nightmare to contain for the Bavarians, who didn’t start playing well until after Morata left the pitch. eventually bagging a 4-2 win. Here’s how he fared in that contest:

Morata’s future will become a little clearer once he reveals what his plans are, and even if he does return to the Spanish capital, Real manager Zinedine Zidane could still opt to keep him at the club, per Calciomercato.

Juventus have already started the search for another forward, and according to Gazzetta Dello Sport (h/t Daily Star’s James Walters), the Italian giants have made a £12 million offer for Brazilian wunderkind Jesus, who has also been linked with United and Inter Milan.

The Sun’s Andrew Richardson claims the Red Devils already made an offer in the past, but Jesus maintains he wants to stay in Brazil for now, per Walters.

Here’s a look at some of his highlights:

Along with Santos’ Gabriel Barbosa, another star forward, Jesus is widely regarded as Brazil’s top young prospect, putting together a solid campaign for Palmeiras last season after a dominant run through the youth setup. The 19-year-old is frequently compared with compatriot Robinho, but unlike the former Real man, he’s often praised for his defensive contributions as well.

Football writer Jonas Giaever is a fan, even comparing him to Barcelona’s Neymar:

Per Sky Sports’ Paulo Freitas, Jesus’ agent has said the forward won’t move until the end of the year, but Freitas won’t rule out a move, despite those comments.

The Campeonato Brasileiro starts on Saturday, however, and Palmeiras won’t be too keen on selling their star forward in the middle of the Brazilian league season. It should take a significant offer to convince both Palmeiras and Jesus to go through with the transfer, and the reported offer of £12 million likely won’t cut it for Juventus.

Chelsea Transfer News: Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mauro Icardi, John Terry, Top Rumours

Chelsea are set to “submit a fresh bid” for Borussia Dortmund winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan after reports claimed owner Roman Abramovich will give new manager Antonio Conte a £130 million transfer kitty to make the Blues contenders once again.

According to TransferMarketWeb.com’s Claudio Colla, Conte will chase several other targets as well, including Kostas Manolas, Radja Nainggolan, Miralem Pjanic, John Stones, Antoine Griezmann and Gonzalo Higuain.

Arsenal have also reportedly shown interest in BVB star Mkhitaryan, with Chelsea willing to pay a high price after offering £46 million to the Bundesliga club last summer for the attacker’s services, per Alex Harris of the Daily Star.

Rather than lose Mkhitaryan for nothing next year, per the Mirror‘s Darren Lewis, it’s possible Dortmund could now look to offload him in the summer window, and FourFourTwo‘s Alex Chaffer has said his future is up in the air—making Dortmund a target for the buying market:

Conte is also tipped to visit his homeland to capture talent from Serie A, with rumours of a move for Inter Milan skipper Mauro Icardi. However, the Argentinian has moved swiftly to deny any potential switch to the Premier League, as reported by Goal’s Sacha Pisani

The player assured Nerazzurri supporters by stating:

I have a contract until 2019 and there are a few years to go yet. I will absolutely stay here. Do I want to become the new Javier Zanetti? Steady on, that’s a lot of years. I am happy to be here and to be wearing his armband. If I get to remain as many years as he did, then I’ll be even happier.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also interested in the forward who has found the back of the net 16 times in Serie A this term.

Here is a video showing off the player’s ability in an Inter shirt:

As Conte makes firm plans for the future, it appears captain John Terry is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

James Gray of the Express reported the former England skipper “expects to leave in the summer,” but will meet senior staff from the club to confirm his future on Thursday.

It is a sorry end to Terry’s career in west London, but the dramatic failure of the team this season ensured a wave of change was always going to happen.

The defender is part of the old guard under disposed manager Jose Mourinho, and will now be consigned to the Hall of Fame containing recent Chelsea legends such as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

Terry could still do a job in the Premier League if he opted to stay in England, but as Matt Law of the Telegraph confirmedthe player has plenty of demand from abroad and is likely to seek out one last payday in China or the Middle East.

Has Ligue 1 Seen the Last of PSG’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Paris Saint-Germain extended their lead at the Ligue 1 summit to 28 points with a 1-1 draw away at Girondins de Bordeaux on Wednesday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for Laurent Blanc‘s men with a superb headed effort from an Angel Di Maria cross after 59 minutes, the Sweden international’s 36th goal in Le Championnat this season.

Although Nicolas Pallois went on to equalise for Les Girondins just seven minutes later, Ibrahimovic‘s goal moved him one step closer to Carlos Bianchi’s 1977-78 total of 37. The talismanic striker needs just one more strike to level the Argentinian’s tally, but two would break it.

With FC Nantes at Parc des Princes on Saturday for the final Ligue 1 match of the season, the 34-year-old bettering Bianchi’s benchmark was very possible.

However, with 19 minutes left at Matmut Atlantique on Wednesday, Ibrahimovic came off injured and was replaced by Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Blanc then confirmed when speaking after the final whistle in Bordeaux that PSG‘s No. 10 is suffering from pain in his calf and offered no assurances that the Scandinavian superstar will be fit to play against Nantes in Paris this weekend.

My players gave the maximum, even though tonight the maximum wasn’t too spectacular. Luckily there wasn’t much at stake. (On Zlatan Ibrahimovic, forced off injured) Zlatan had a bit of pain in his calf and he preferred to come off. He’ll do all he can to be there on the pitch (on Saturday against Nantes) but he has some big matches coming up, notably the Euros, so neither he nor we will be taking the slightest risk.

With Ibrahimovic‘s contract expiring this summer and no news that an agreement over an extension to that deal has been reached—or that one has even been offered—it is possible Ligue 1 saw the last of Zlatan in the 1-1 draw away at Bordeaux.

PSG still have a Coupe de France final against bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille to come later this month, and the Swede is unlikely to want to miss that visit to Stade de France for what may well be his final piece of silverware as a player with the French champions.

Although the Coupe de France clash and the upcoming European Championship with Sweden are understandably more important than a meaningless Ligue 1 clash with Nantes, it would be a shame if Ibrahimovic was not given a proper chance to say goodbye to the Parc des Princes crowd.

Considering all that he has done for PSG and Ligue 1, Zlatan is deserving of one final send-off in the French capital, and Nantes could be the perfect opponents for that.

If Ibrahimovic is fit enough to start against Michel Der Zakarian’s men on Saturday, he could be signing off in Le Championnat with considerable style.

With 36 goals and 13 assists from just 30 league appearances for Zlatan, the capital club’s fans are witnessing modern French footballing history being written by their star man on an almost weekly basis.

To break one last target and make what is already his best-ever season even better would be a memorable way for arguably the best player to ever grace the French top flight to sign off.

Assuming this is it for Ibrahimovic‘s time at PSG—which appears very likely at this moment in time—then the former AC Milan, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, AFC Ajax and Malmo FF star merits his chance to bow out with a bang.

Les Parisiens will be celebrating their latest Ligue 1 and Coupe de la Ligue triumphs after Saturday’s clash with Nantes, and if Zlatan is fit to feature—even just as a substitute—then it will add to the party atmosphere at Parc des Princes this weekend.

AC Milan Limp into Season Finale with European Hopes Alive but Slipping

After dropping behind Sassuolo for the all-important sixth position in the Serie A table recently, AC Milan could accept nothing less than three points from their trip to Bologna on Saturday.

At the end, a 1-0 victory was theirs, but it came by the skin of their teeth against a team forced to play down a man for 78 minutes. Indeed, if not for a fractional offside call, Bologna would have equalized.

There is no way to overemphasize how important a win was for the Rossoneri. The bare minimum to regard this season as a success is to qualify for Europe for the first time in three seasons. Milan have two ways to get there. The most direct way is to beat Juventus in the Coppa Italia final on May 21. If they fail to beat the now-five-time defending champions of Italy, though, they can still get into the UEFA Europa League by finishing sixth in Serie A.

Until the end of April, both options were open to them, but their hold on sixth had been slipping for a while. Manager Sinisa Mihajlovic lost his job after going the entire month of March and the beginning of April winless, but the team’s form seems to have reached its nadir under his successor, Cristian Brocchi.

Before Saturday, Milan’s previous three games were against teams placed 17th, 20th and 19th respectively. The results of those games? A goalless draw against Carpi, an embarrassing 2-1 loss to relegated Verona and a 3-3 draw against Frosinone that twice saw the team down by two goals.

That result put Milan a point behind Sassuolo for that all-important sixth position in the table—and made their final two games against Bologna and Roma must-wins.

Striker Carlos Bacca praised his team after Saturday’s match, telling Mediaset Premium (h/t Football Italia) Milan “played an intelligent match.” He sounded like he’s buttering his teammates up a bit because it certainly looked in the opening moments like the pressure was getting to them.

Within five minutes, Bologna had a strong penalty appeal waved away by referee Daniele Doveri.  Mattia De Sciglio grabbed Juan Zuniga’s shirt as he went for a Matteo Brienza cross, but the Colombian’s pleas for a spot-kick went unheeded. A minute later, Jose Mauri was booked after shoving Amadou Diawara during a scuffle after a fight for the ball.

It was the first of four bookings for Milan players, and Mauri was lucky not to get a second after 18 minutes, when he crashed into Brienza.

If he had, he would have wasted a precious advantage for Milan, who had gone a man up after only 12 minutes, when Diawara, who was also booked in the fracas with Mauri, caught Riccardo Montolivo on the shin and duly received his marching orders.

But rather than taking the extra man and stepping on Bologna’s throat, Milan seemed almost incapable of capitalizing on their advantage. For much of the remainder of the first period, they cycled the ball around in the Bologna end but found it impossible to break the Rossoblu down. Most attacking moves ended in overhit crosses, long balls that were too long or shots that never came close to the target.

That changed five minutes from halftime, when a long clearance from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma flew over everyone and found Luiz Adriano. When the Brazilian breezed past the few defenders around and into the box, he was taken down by ‘keeper Angelo Da Costa. Bacca slammed the resulting penalty into the back of the net via Da Costa’s fingertips.

Milan came out of the locker room the better team in the second half, but they couldn’t make their pressure pay. Bacca overhit an early pass to Adriano, and later Milan’s No. 9 was closed down before he could fire after the Colombian hit him with another pass. There were chances, but none that were dangerous enough to truly pressure Da Costa.

But even on the ascendancy, the Rossoneri looked like they couldn’t keep their heads. Andrea Bertolacci was booked for a cynical dive less than a minute after coming on as a sub, and on the hour, Davide Calabria was booked for a badly timed sliding challenge.

It was around that time the hosts got back into the game. Sergio Floccari came close with headers not long after the hour mark, and after Anthony Mounier came on as a sub with 10 minutes left, he immediately created a dangerous situation that was only relieved when he overshot Emanuele Giaccherini with a cross.

Milan still had their fair share of attacking moves. Adriano in particular saw three chances go begging in the last 10 minutes—and it nearly cost his team. One minute from time, Adam Masina tapped a flicked-on corner into the net for what looked to be a crippling equalizer. But the assistant had his flag up, and replays showed that while the decision was extremely tight, it was also correct.

Milan saw out the rest of the game and took the points back to the San Siro, but the win gave little clarity as to whether they’ll be able to regain sixth place.

All of the pieces seemed to fall into place for Milan on Saturday. They had a man advantage for almost 80 minutes, but they looked totally incapable of making that advantage pay. A lack of creativity has been one of Milan’s weaknesses, and without Giacomo Bonaventura, that weakness has only been magnified.

Compounding the problem is the team’s lack of composure, both in front of goal and in the tackle. Mauri’s scuffle with Diawara was immature, and his lack of caution after that incident risked a second yellow. They weren’t able to keep their heads in attack, either scuffing chances or failing to find the final ball to set them up.

And this was against Bologna. Their next league game—one that will decide their European ambitions—is against AS Roma. The Giallorossi haven’t lost in the league since January 24, when they went down 1-0 at the Juventus Stadium. Since then, their only setbacks have been a pair of 2-0 losses to Real Madrid—and they played much better in those games than the score suggested. Otherwise, Luciano Spalletti has led the team to 12 wins and three draws in 15 games, including eight straight victories.

Milan played Roma to a 1-1 draw in January and deserved to win after dominating the second half. But that was Rudi Garcia’s Roma.  Spalletti’s team is a different animal—one Milan may not be able to handle. That means they’ll likely need Sassuolo to stumble—either against Frosinone on Sunday or Inter Milan the following week—if they want to gain sixth place.

That’s the most likely avenue back into Europe. Facing Juventus is a daunting task—one they’ve failed twice this season. But Milan are heading into their showdown at a limp, and if Sassuolo manage to win both of their remaining games, anything they do will be moot.

European competition, considered a near-certainty two months ago, is in danger of slipping away—and Milan may not be equipped to stop it.

Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Granit Xhaka Rumours

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Marco Verratti has revealed the reported Arsenal transfer target “never answers” when the Italian asks him to stay with his current club. Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka is said to be warming up to the idea of playing for the Gunners.

As reported by Metro’s Mark Brus, Verratti told reporters he has done everything possible to keep the Sweden international in the French capital, but so far, Ibrahimovic hasn’t revealed his plans for the future, even to his team-mates:

“I always tell him to stay, but he never answers. He and the club will see. I, like all my team-mates, want him to stay because he’s had an extraordinary season. I don’t see anyone stronger than him. He’ll make a decision soon.”

Ibrahimovic’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the veteran is expected to leave PSG with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea all said to be monitoring the situation.

The 34-year-old, who has never spent longer than a handful of seasons at the same club, has been with Les Parisiens since 2012, but the team’s lack of success in Europe is reportedly pushing him toward the exit door.

His agent Mino Raiola has already revealed that negotiations with former club AC Milan are underway, per GQ Magazine (h/t Football Italia). Ibrahimovic enjoyed some of his finest years in the Italian fashion capital, but the Rossoneri aren’t exactly in a position to challenge for the UEFA Champions League.

Here’s a look at some of the Swede’s highlights:

Ibrahimovic put together another fantastic campaign in 2015-16, defying Father Time by scoring an impressive 34 goals and adding 13 assists in Ligue 1, per WhoScored.com. He added five more goals and three assists in the Champions League, showing he’s not just beating up on Ligue 1’s weaker teams.

He scored in the Champions League quarter-final tie with Manchester City but was largely ineffective outside of that strike, as PSG were eliminated by an aggregate score of 3-2.

Ibrahimovic has never played in the Premier League, and back in 2014, he told the Guardian’s Donald McRae he would never move to an English club. His love for PSG was the reason he wouldn’t move, however, and according to Le Parisien (h/t Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Johnson), things look different just two years later:

Whether Ibrahimovic would be a good fit for the Premier League—and the Gunners in particular—is another matter. The Daily Mail’s Martin Keown doesn’t believe so:

One could argue that Arsenal could use the winning attitude Ibrahimovic brings to the table—he has won titles with Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan and PSG—but at his age, the inevitable decline will set in soon, and Arsenal may end up with an overpaid, ageing striker who has always been brash and has caused trouble in the past, per McRae.

Meanwhile, TransferMarketWeb (h/t Daily Star’s Alex Harris) claim Xhaka is being followed by the Gunners, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but he’s growing “more inclined” to accept Arsenal’s offer for a move this summer.

The Switzerland international has enjoyed an excellent season in the middle of the park for Monchengladbach, and Bleacher Report’s Clark Whitney fears an exodus is imminent for the club:

Per Harris, Xhaka has already confirmed he dreams of moving to the Premier League, and no club has been linked with a move more than Arsenal. Here’s a look at some of his highlights:

The 23-year-old seems likely to join Arsenal at some point this summer, although Monchengladbach are expected to hold out for a significant fee.
