Napoli Defender Koulibaly: “Inter Surprised Us In The Beginning But We Reacted Well”

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly discussed the Partenopei’s 1-1 draw against Inter and the club’s qualification to the Coppa Italia final in an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai Sport immediately after the game.

“In the beginning Inter surprised us, we got into trouble, but we were good at reacting and, after the equaliser, to remain very solid. Gattuso gave us more self-esteem, especially the ability to play from behind when compared to the first months of the season.”

He then moved onto talking about the team are on the right path for the future and are looking ahead to the finals. The Naples based club will meet rivals Juventus in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday next week.

“We’re on the right road, we’ll be ready for the final. Now the things we were doing before are coming back, we’re aware that we can do better. We hope to give something back to our fans.”

Inter coach Antonio Conte will be bitterly disappointed after the failure to beat Napoli in the Stadio San Paolo tonight, as the Lecce born coach was hoping to win the Coppa Italia in order to achieve some silverware in his first season in charge of the Nerazzurri.

The former Juventus and Chelsea coach has never won the Coppa Italia as a coach and will have to wait until next season to try again.

The Nerazzurri will now focus on the league and their attempt to stay competitive in the title race, although settling for a 3rd place finish behind Lazio and Juventus seems like a likely outcome.

The Milanese club are currently nine points behind league leaders Juventus, although they have a game in hand thanks to the postponed game against Sampdoria that is still to be played.

Photo – Inter Wingback Antonio Candreva: “Sorry About The Defeat”

Inter wing back Antonio Candreva apologised for the Nerazzurri’s bitter 1-1 draw against Napoli and elimination from the Coppa Italia in a post on his Instagram page.

The Milanese club started last night’s game 1-0 down, after losing at home to Gennaro Gattuso’s squad earlier this year, before the Coronavirus stop. Whilst an early goal from Christian Eriksen started the night well, the Nerazzurri failed to score again and a Dries Mertens goal spelled disaster.

Candreva commented on the game, saying: “Sorry for the result. Now let’s get ready for the resumption of the league. Always with our heads up.”

Photo – Inter Full Back D’Ambrosio Watches Coppa Italia Clash At Home

Inter full back Danilo D’Ambrosio shared how he watched the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 Coppa Italia draw against Napoli in a post on his Instagram page yesterday.

The 31-year-old Italian, who has featured lightly under coach Antonio Conte this season, was forced to sit out for last night’s clash against the Partenopei, due to a small injury.

The Milanese club failed to overcome a 1-0 defeat at home to Napoli before the season stop and only achieved a 1-1 draw in Naples last night, sending them home empty handed. Napoli will face Juventus on Wednesday in the final.

Italian Journalist Fabio Ravezzani: “A Lautaro Martinez Problem Has Arisen At Inter”

Italian journalist and the director of Telelombardia Fabio Ravezzani discussed Inter striker Lautaro Martinez’ disappointing performance against Napoli in the 1-1 draw earlier tonight in a post on his Twitter page.

The journalist highlighted how the 22-year-old Argentine striker, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023, lacked the desire and drive to score against the Partenopei, due to the strong interest of Barcelona in the player.

The Blaugrana are reportedly incredibly keen to sign Lautaro, as they believe that he would be the perfect replacement for the aging Luis Suarez.

Ravezzani also noted that poor performances from Lautaro would make those in Barcelona happy, as it may help to facilitate a deal if it appears that the player’s head has already been turned.

Inter are not interested in selling the 22-year-old Argentine forward and so would only let him go if the Catalan club paid his €111 million release clause in full, something that seems unlikely at this stage.

“A Lautaro problem has arisen at Inter in a strong way. He lacks the desire and meanness that made the difference in the beginning of the season. It’s obvious that Barcelona’s proposals have conditioned him.

“A solution needs to be found in a hurry. Because the worse he plays the more they smile in Barcelona.”

Inter Coach Antonio Conte: “Congrats Napoli But We Dominated, Satisfied With Christian Eriksen”

Inter coach Antonio Conte discussed the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 draw against Napoli and elimination from the Coppa Italia in an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai Sport immediately after the game.

“In the two matches we deserved much more. There’s very little to complain about to the guys, it’s right, it’s the football we want, to dominate the match. We’ve created a lot, we could have been clinical in front of goal.”

The Lecce born coach highlighted how the Napoli goalkeeper kept the Partenopei in the tie and how the game fit the vision of the coach.

“I saw some amazing Ospina saves. The goal they scored was a light touch that we could have avoided. I’m satisfied, it’s the path we’ve taken, it’s the football we want to play, we made the match our own. We conceded a goal that leaves a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths.”

He commented on the attacking partnership of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, both of whom failed to find the back of the net.

“I see the glass as half full. We created a lot, there were lots of Ospina saves, the best player on the pitch. You can improve in everything and in the finishing, but I have little to complain about in terms of performance and desire.

“We did what we tried in training, we’re trying to improve as much as we did before, I’m satisfied. I’m sorry for the guys, they deserved to play in the final.”

Conte touched on the performance of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen and how he was satisfied with the performance in the game.

“I’m satisfied with the performance. Napoli played closed to their defence and counter attacked. In these situations, it’s not easy to find a way in, we created a lot, the midfielders did a great job.

“Eriksen is integrating, we’re working and you can see the results. It wasn’t easy, the statistics speak of a team that dominated.”

The former Chelsea and Juventus boss spoke about the goal scored by Dries Mertens and whether the Inter defenders could have done more.

“In the corner, the positions were right. Then the action developed, and we lost positioning. There was a cross and we lost our positions. Unfortunately, you pay for the mistake. I’m sorry, but we have to treasure it and understand that details make all the difference.

“We have some steps to take, but this is the way. Inter had a great game. Dominating against a team like Napoli is an important thing. We would have deserved the final, these are disappointments that must make us angry and make us grow.”

Conte repeated that he was happy with the performance despite the failure to advance in the competition.

“Often the result directs criticism. I’m a coach and I’m happy because that’s the path we want to take, an aggressive team that has shot 17 times. These are the facts, they had two shots on goal. We had 60% ball possession. Congratulations to Napoli, but I make very critical analyses, from a performance point of view I’m very happy, we deserved the final.”

Finally, Conte spoke about his decision to line up the team in a 3-4-1-2 formation in order to accommodate Eriksen, who played behind the striking duo.

“We played in a 3-4-1-2 today, he played behind the strikers, it’s another system. Today Eriksen was behind the strikers and had a clear reference that was Demme. We played differently. The trequartista has a reference, the defensive midfielder.

“He doesn’t have to run far, but he runs 12-13 km. I’m satisfied with him, maybe I saw another game. He played well, he was decisive, he could have scored another goal. I think it’s a positive note, we found an ad hoc situation to put our players in the best conditions.”
