Belgium Coach Martinez: “Inter’s Lukaku’s Words Were Interpreted In A Certain Way”

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez discussed the comments made by Inter striker Romelu Lukaku two years ago, where he suggested that he would leave the Belgian national team after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, in an interview with Belgian media outlet La Dernière Heure earlier today.

“His words have been interpreted in a certain way. I think he mainly wanted to send a positive signal. What he wanted to say is that all that matters is the next tournament.”

Lukaku has made 84 appearances for Belgium since his debut in 2010. The 27-year-old has scored 52 goals in that time, providing 13 assists in the process. He has been a focal point for the Red Devils since the 2014 World Cup.

The 27-year-old scored four goals in Russia in 2018 as Belgium achieved a third-place finish, losing to France in the semi-finals. A summer later Lukaku moved to Inter from Manchester United, and has quickly impressed under the guidance of coach Antonio Conte. AIC Vice President Calcagno: “It’s Necessary To Remove Afternoon Games In The Restart For Players’ Safety”

Vice president of the Italian Footballers’ Association Umberto Calcagno discussed the restart of the season and the issue of playing games in the hot afternoon sun in an interview with Italian radio broadcaster Radio Punto Nuovo earlier today.

“It is necessary to remove the afternoon slot and play only in the two pre-evening and evening games. Playing at 16-16.30 at certain times of the year is a problem in the South, as well as elsewhere. Cancelling the afternoon games and playing over several days is the best solution.”

Calcagno suggested that removing those time slots would be the safest way to ensure that the players aren’t subject to dangerous conditions, especially considering the lack of regularity in their physical preparations and schedule.

“It’s a way to protect the health of the players who will be subjected to a crazy period. The players’ concern stems from the fact that no one has experience of such a long period of inactivity.”

Serie A will restart on the 20th June, three months after being stopped due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Italy has moved past the worst stages of the virus and is slowly removing the lockdown measures, giving some level of normalcy to the Italian people, who have spent months inside their homes in lockdown. Other leagues around Europe are also planning to restart, following on from the German Bundesliga’s decision to restart a few weeks ago. The Premier League and La Liga will also restart next month.

Marcello Lippi: “If Inter Beat Sampdoria Then It’s A Three-Way Title Race With Juventus & Lazio”

Former Juventus and Inter coach Marcello Lippi discussed the remaining title race and the matches to be played behind closed doors in an interview with Italian radio broadcaster Radiosei earlier today.

“Inter are further back in the league table but if they win the recovered game against Sampdoria, they are involved and Juve and Lazio have the direct clash still to play. In my opinion it’s a three-way race.”

Lippi also commented on the fact that the remaining games of the season have to be played behind closed doors.

“It’s a sacrifice we have to accept.”

Serie A is set to restart on the 20th June, after the completion of the Coppa Italia. The Nerazzurri are currently nine points behind league leaders Juventus and eight points behind second place Lazio, although they do have a game in hand after their game against Sampdoria was postponed.

The Nerazzurri are also still involved in both the Europa League and Coppa Italia, giving coach Antonio Conte three different goals to focus on. The Milanese club are hoping to keep a hold of their star striker Lautaro Martinez, who is heavily wanted by Spanish giants Barcelona. The Blaugrana are keen to sign the 22-year-old but cannot afford to pay his €111 million release clause.

Christian Vieri: “I Signed For Inter Because I Wanted To Play With Ronaldo”

Former Inter striker Christian Vieri discussed his time with the Nerazzurri and Brazilian star Ronaldo in an interview in today’s print edition of the Italian magazine SportWeek, produced by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

First, he spoke about former Nerazzurri forward Ronaldo.

“That’s my weak point. I went to Inter to play with him. He’s a great guy, generous, like when he gave me penalty kicks so I could win the top scorer award. I love him, our friendship is strong, authentic. We talk to each other whenever possible. In the summer I stay in Formentera for a long time, and when I want to say goodbye to Ronie I just have to reach Ibiza at one in the morning and go to the Casino, he’s there.”

He then spoke about his relationship with another former Nerazzurri player, Alvaro Recoba, and how the pair have a friendly rivalry playing tennis.

“His wife Lorena can’t take it anymore. She asks me to let him win so he would calm down. In order to challenge me, when I lived in the U.S.A., he would do Montevideo-Miami-Montevideo in a few hours, he would play, lose and go home. Joking aside, Chino is special, to give me a hand with the Bobo Summer Cup he used to travel very long distances even when he only had a few days to play. The other night I was looking back at my Inter goals and I realised that at least 60-70% of the goals I owe to Chino.”

Vieri spent six years of his long career with Inter, from 1999 to 2005. In that time, he won a Coppa Italia, but failed to win a league title with the Milanese club. He made 190 appearances for the Nerazzurri across all competitions, for a total of 14,434 minutes. In that time, he scored 122 goals and provided nine assists, being a consistent part of the squad during his time in Milan. Vieri had a good relationship on the pitch with both Ronaldo and Recoba, which made him popular amongst fans.

Alfred Duncan: “Learned A Lot By Playing For Inter Which Is A Top European Club”

Former Inter midfielder Alfred Duncan, who started his career with the Nerazzurri before joining Sampdoria in 2014, discussed his time with the Milanese club and his idol in an interview with Italian media outlet Calciomercato.com earlier today.

“Inter was something unexpected but beautiful, a very important club, at the top in Italy and Europe, I was able to train with formidable players, an experience that gave me and allowed me to grow a lot.”

The 27-year-old Ghanaian then discussed his idols and how it felt to train with former Inter midfielder Thiago Motta.

“Before I arrived in Italy, I used to watch Xabi Alonso, but Guti was the player I liked the most given his incredible quality with his feet. When I arrived in Italy, I had the opportunity to train with Thiago Motta who played exemplary football in his role.”

Duncan started with Inter as a teenager, spending two years with the Nerazzurri before officially signing for them after his 18th birthday in 2012. He spent two more years with the Milanese club, where he made four appearances across all competitions, for a total of 115 minutes. He spent time on loan at Livorno before making himself known across Italy due to his performances with Sassuolo. Inter & Juventus Linked Arturo Vidal: “I’m Happy Here At Barcelona”

Inter linked midfielder Arturo Vidal discussed his future, the return to training and the restart of the season in an interview with Barcelona earlier today.

“It was exciting to come back after what happened. With teammates, there was a lot of happiness and a lot of conversation at a distance, trying to understand if each one of us has had the virus.”

The 33-year-old Chilean midfielder then discussed important it was for the squad to come together for the remaining games of the season.

“For us it is very important that Luis and the other injured players recover, because it will be two intense months with many games to play in a short space of time. We need to be at 100% for the two competitions we have left.”

The former Juventus and Bayern Munich midfielder commented on how it will feel to play games behind closed doors.

“I like to connect with the public, it feels good and it gives me great joy and enthusiasm, but we have to adapt and take advantage of all the training sessions we’ve had to achieve our goals.”

Vidal spoke about the remaining 11 league games of the season.

“These 11 games are going to be 11 finals, we are all clear about that, and that they will be very difficult. We have to trust ourselves, we have to think about winning and also doing it in the best way.”

Finally, Vidal spoke about how it would feel to win a 9th consecutive league title in his career.

“It would be a dream to win nine leagues in a row, because achieving a record with that many titles is very difficult. I still feel good and will continue fighting and winning trophies. Few players in history have done this and I’m proud. I hope to win the 9th here with Barça.”

Vidal has made 31 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1414 minutes. In that time, he has scored six goals and provided three assists, earning more consistent playing time after the arrival of coach Quique Setién. The player has been heavily wanted by coach Antonio Conte for some time now, although the club’s management are less keen on the idea.
