Inter Owned Valentino Lazaro’s Future At Newcastle Very Uncertain

Valentino Lazaro is facing an uncertain future at Newcastle United according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

The Austrian national team player joined the Premier League outfit back in the January transfer window in a loan deal until the end of the season from Inter and as part of the deal Newcastle United obtained an option to buy which is reportedly set at around €20 million.

The report from the Rome based newspaper explains that Lazaro’s future at St James’ Park will largely be decided by whether or not Steve Bruce remains in charge.

With Newcastle United set to be taken over by a Saudi Arabian led consortium, many reports have suggested that they could bring in a big name manager.

Whilst out on loan at Newcastle United, Lazaro has made a total of five appearances across all competitions, in which he has scored a single goal.

Barcelona’s Arturo Vidal Tops Inter Coach Antonio Conte’s List Of Players To Sign This Summer

Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal sits at the top of Inter manager Antonio Conte’s Summer transfer window wishlist according to a report in today’s print edition of Tuttosport.

Inter would like to bring in another player to the midfield who can guarantee 20 high level performances a season whilst the remaining games will be left to highly promising Nicolo Barella to allow him to continue his growth.

Vidal has little over a year left to run on his contract with the Catalonia based club and the report explains that Inter do not want to include him in any potential deal for Lautaro Martinez and would instead prefer to do a separate deal for him.

The report also goes on to add that Inter very much want to sign Napoli’s Dries Mertens. The 33-year-old’s contract with the Partneopei is due to expire at the end of next month and Inter have tabled him a two year contract offer.

Spanish Media Claim Real Madrid & Barcelona To Battle It Out For Inter’s Milan Skriniar

La Liga’s two biggest clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid are both interested in signing Inter central defender Milan Skriniar according to a report from the online edition of Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo.

Should 2018 World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti depart Barcelona in the coming months then the Blaugrana club will move for Skriniar.

As for Real Madrid, Los Blancos would like to sign him as the long term replacement for 34-year-old club captain Sergio Ramos, whose contract with the club is due to expire at the end of next season.

25-year-old Skriniar is in the midst of his third season with Inter and although he has shown some signs of struggle adapting to Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 system, he still continues to be one of the best defenders in Italy at the moment.

The Slovakian international, who has a contract with Inter until the end of the 2022/23 season, has made 32 appearances across all competitions to date this term, in which he has tallied one assist.

Inter Expect Big Money To Let €111M Rated Barcelona Target Lautaro Martinez Leave Club

Inter are standing strong with their demands for Lautaro Martinez despite Barcelona seemingly being reluctant to pay them according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

Barcelona most recently offered €80 million plus a single player but Inter rejected the offer from the Blaugrana club, who have seemingly identified Lautaro as one of their top transfer targets ahead of the upcoming Summer transfer window.

Inter however expect the 22-year-old Argentine’s €111 million release clause to be activated or an offer of €90 million plus two players with it understood that Junior Firpo or Nelson Semedo are both seen as suitable counterparts by Inter management.

The report goes on to state that Lautaro will soon have to come out into the open with regard to what he wants to do as the highly rated striker, who is under contract with Inter until 2023, has so far remained tight lipped on his future.

Italian Minister of Sports Spadafora: “Everyone Should Be A Bit Calmer, From The Outside You’re All Scientists”

Italian Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora discussed the restart of Serie A on a livestream on his Facebook page yesterday afternoon.

“There is a difference in positions what route to take which exists as a result of a general complexity, I would invite everyone not to say that we are creating chaos, but rather to say that we are moving cautiously to prevent everything from restarting and then being forced to stop everything again. There is concern even among the players, many people write to me on the social media.”

Spadafora then commented on the criticism levied against him suggesting that a professional athlete should be in his position, not a politician.

“I’d invite everyone to be a little calmer, from the outside you’re all scientists, footballers, referees. They tell me ‘you’re not one who comes from the world of sport’, in order to be a sports minister you don’t need to have been an athlete, I don’t think Speranza has ever operated on someone or De Micheli has ever driven a train.

“You have to listen to who knows more than us, but then take responsibility. The world of football asks us to be the ones to take responsibility for the stop, they won’t decide on their own.”

The FIGC protocol has been heavily criticised, in part for its vagueness and lack of specific solution should a player test positive once the season has restarted.

Serie A teams have been instructed that they are allowed to return to squad training from tomorrow onward, but Inter aren’t planning to begin it yet, unhappy with the restrictive conditions imposed on the squad.

Lega Serie A have been keenly following the situation in German football, after the Bundesliga restarted this weekend. None of the Inter squad or staff have tested positive for Coronavirus, and so should be prepared to restart the league in mid-June, which seems to be the targeted restart period.

FIGC Hand Over Updated Medical Protocol Proposal For Resumption Of Football To Italian Government

The Italian football federation have handed over their updated proposal of the medical protocol to be put in place for the resumption on football in Italy, this evening to the Italian government, according to a report from Italian media outlet GianlucaDiMarzio.com.

The report details how the new protocol was handed over by the FIGC to Italian minister of sport Vincenzo Spadafora, which will be handed over to the Technical Scientific Committee should it pass the government’s checks.

If the new protocol is approved, the clubs will see two issues resolved. The first is that there is no longer the obligation to go into locked training camps at each respective club’s training ground, and the second is that if a player tests positive for Coronavirus then only that player will go into quarantine.

Squad training could resume as early as Tuesday next week, the report continues, only a day later than initially expected. These rules will only be valid for the next 14 days of squad training, with the resumption of the league requiring daily checks of sports centres and a different protocol.

The Forgotten Faces At Inter – Matthias Sammer: A Nerazzurri Legend That Never Was

In this series of articles we will be reminding you of players you forgot ever donned the black and blue of the Nerazzurri, as well as discussing and dissecting their time at Inter as well as the rest of their careers.

First in the series is Ballon D’Or winning German sweeper/midfielder Matthias Sammer.

Ask anyone in German football about some of the best defensive midfield players that they have ever produced and there is no doubt Matthias Sammer would be somewhere near the top of that list.

Matthias-Sammer-Inter-06.jpg

Sammer began his career in 1985 with his local club Dynamo Dresden who were incidentally being managed by his father Klaus.

Sammer took no time to adapt to senior football but a little longer to find his position on the pitch. The German scored eight goals in his debut season playing as a striker before finding himself out on the wing the following season.

During his time at Dresden, Sammer picked up an East German Championship winners medal as well as one FDGB Pokal title. Dresden were beaten in the UEFA Cup semi-final by fellow German side VFB Stuttgart who poached the services of Sammer at the end of that season.

It was at Stuttgart where Sammer started to appear in the spotlight as he was now playing in the unified German top flight, the Bundesliga. Playing now in his customary central midfield role, Sammer helped the club to sixth in his first season, adding eleven goals in the process.

However, it was to be his exploits in the next year that were to bring him to San Siro. VFB Stuttgart, with Sammer running their midfield, became the first unified German champions in 1991/92. Soon came a call from The Nerazzuri..

In the summer of 1992, Inter completed the signing of Sammer to replace the outgoing Lothar Matthäus who returned to his native Germany that summer.

Matthias-Sammer-Inter-02.jpg

The deal was seen as great coup for Inter would were looking to try and challenge for the Scudetto alongside cross town rivals AC Milan.

Sammer was to only last half a season in Italy, citing his inability to fit in with the Italian lifestyle and homesickness as the reason for his short stay.

On the pitch Sammer managed eleven appearances, scoring four times. One of the goals he scored happened to be against Juventus in the Derby D’Italia which instantly earned him the respect of all Interisti.

Sammer’s short yet productive spell for Inter did nothing to damage his burgeoning reputation in the game so when he requested to return to Germany in January 1993, he wasn’t short of offers.

Matthias-Sammer-Inter-04.jpg

The German returned to his native land with Borussia Dortmund where he went on to achieve both personal and club success.

Sammer captained Dortmund to back to back German titles and the Champions League title in 1997 as they triumphed over Juventus 3-1 in Munich.

On a personal level, Sammer won the Ballon D’Or in 1996 as well as winning Player of the Tournament at the European Championships in the same year as he led Germany to the title on English soil.

Injury curtailed Sammer’s career in 1998, but there can be no doubt that his achievements on the pitch are up with the best of his generation. Sammer successfully made the transition to management with Dortmund, winning the 2002 Bundesliga title before becoming a director at Bayern Munich.

Matthias-Sammer-Inter-05.jpg

No one will ever be able to know whether or not Sammer could have been an Inter great as his time at the club was too short. Understandably, he sought to return home to his native Germany as he couldn’t settle in Italy but one can’t help but think what an impact he would have made running the Nerazzuri midfield throughout the 1990s.

He could have been potentially playing alongside a young Javier Zanetti and Ronaldo. In Sammer’s case it wasn’t a question of his ability that made his Inter stint forgettable it was its severe lack of longevity.

Luciano Spalletti: “My Happiest Memory With Inter Was The Win In Rome Against Lazio”

Former Inter coach Luciano Spalletti discussed his thoughts about the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, international football and his time in charge of Inter in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia, aired late last night.

“This place reminds me how beautiful this sport can be, that made me live a life like a king and that made me live emotions that in a normal life I would have never done.

“I met the Pope, I heard Andrea Bocelli singing live in Appiano Gentile. These are things that I will always carry with me, it is a privilege that this sport gives.”

The Italian coach discussed how his life has changed in the lockdown.

“This is the biggest mass injury in the history of football and sport in general. Footballers have been forced to stop suddenly like they’ve suffered a muscle injury. How they will recover depends on each one’s ability to communicate with their body during this period.

“We must applaud the medical staff, doctors, nurses and all those people who have worked hard to improve things. This was a demonstration of what it means to work for the good of others, I was pleased to thank everyone.”

The former Inter coach spoke about whether Serie A should be restarted, as is planned, or officially suspended, like the French Ligue 1.

“It’s clear that whatever solution adopted to finish the season, it will make some happy and some unhappy. When we’re forced to change things in the game, there’s no fair solution for everyone.

“I think we’ll have to go back to the game and put our hands on our hearts because people want to watch football. I’d be happy to see the season restart, it will have to be done thinking about people and their suffering in this period.

“With the awareness that football is one of the most powerful tools to return to normal, people prefer to see the games in their free time, it is the entertainment that is chosen the most. And we, within the limits of safety, must also think about them.”

Spalletti touched on his fondest memories of Inter, Milan and the club’s fans.

“I have many good memories, also because we got to the end of both seasons with teams in fifth and sixth place breathing down our necks. They were strong, exciting moments.

“Probably the first season with the victory in Rome against Lazio was one of the moments that made me rejoice the most. Then the victory in the second derby in 2019 when everyone thought we were doomed, to see the Inter fans rejoicing at the Meazza was something that is part of this room of memories that leads to reliving those moments.”

He revealed that he did expect the Nerazzurri to comeback at that game in the Stadio Olimpico against Lazio.

“Of course. When you do this work you have to think in the right direction. The right way of thinking is what the players are looking after, it’s they who absorb the movements, the thoughts, the conviction that they can do it.

“In the locker room at halftime we said the right things to each other, and the reactions were what I wanted to see. Then we needed the players with personality, those who stay strong even when it’s difficult.”

The former Inter coach defended his results with the Nerazzurri during his time in charge due to the fact that they still qualified for the Champions League.

“I don’t know how you assessed my time at Inter, but reaching the Champions League is the most important goal after winning the league. Then if you make it to the Champions League final or have a great match in the most beautiful competition in the world, it’s something special.

“But it’s superior to winning the Coppa Italia, it doesn’t give you a trophy but sends you into the most beautiful competition in the world. We had difficulties then, even though I’ve never used teams for personal goals.

“I’ve never traded team goals to save my image. Either you do things professionally or make a mess. Dirty laundry is washed in the family, and sometimes you take it to the laundromat for a wash.”

Spalletti spoke about his relationship with former Inter director of football Walter Sabatini.

“I stood up in front of him because in addition to being a true genius he’s a great professional and a great friend. At first, we approached each other like stray animals, then it was a collaboration and a total friendship, made up of professionalism and respect.

“Each of us thought we had a better footballer than the other, we spent whole nights talking about football and football players.”

He continued talking about Sabatini and how he helped both Inter and Roma improve.

“If football were a film, Sabatini would be a great director. He always knows how to find footballers who can move the audience.

“I remember in 2016 when, with no money at his disposal, he brought Perotti and El Shaarawy, who were essential to drive that season and do well afterwards. He had total respect for the market and knowledge of what could be used.”

The former Roma coach detailed what he sees in some football players that others might not, such as midfielders who could be moved up the pitch.

“As far as I’m concerned, we always try to make players the heroes. They have to be the absolute heroes, while defending the club. You go and talk to them, you listen to the things they say which you can use.

“By now everyone wants to do well and create a brand in their football history. I’ve tried to see the skills of these players there, I remember Perrotta starting as a midfielder but at Chievo I always saw him fit in the right way at decisive moments.

“He looks like Vecino, who needs a well-defined space and when he considers doing something, he hardly changes his mind because he has a quicker pace. Perrotta, however, knows how to combine other decisions.

“But they both know how to final third well, they have a pull from the outside like Nainggolan. To do this you need space in the area to use, at Roma I then had a player in front of me like Totti, who created space by not being found by the opposing defenders.

“These are masters at creating these spaces. You listen to how they behave in training, you don’t just look at them.”

Spalletti discussed how his first Roma squad came about.

“It was a Roma team made up of players who passed the ball without ever putting their teammates in trouble. It takes a lot of quality to do that and they had it, it’s the many successful passes that make the difference and create a team that plays football well.”

The former Inter coach spoke about his phrase ‘strong men, strong destiny’s.’

“It was born simply. Then it got a particular response, so much so that we’ll try to highlight it because it deserves to be remembered.

“The thing that made me happy was to see a doctor in the hospitals who had written this sentence with the marker behind his PPE.

“It filled me with pride and pleasure. But it is a synthetic phrase, which immediately gives the listener an idea of the ones you often look for. It explains itself, but it came like so many other phrases that coaches look for in order to get an answer.”

Spalletti discussed which players he would have liked to coach in his career.

“I have jerseys from many players I’ve coached and other players I’ve had as an opponent. Vieri, I would have liked to coach him, same for Drogba or Rooney.

“But also, people like Kakà and Cannavaro, who is an exceptional person. But then I was very lucky to coach so many of them that at the beginning, when I decided to do this profession, I would never have believed who I’d coach. These are enough for me.”

Finally, Spalletti discussed how players were once fined for using their mobile phones.

“Footballers sometimes use loopholes. At first, for example, they tried not to let them use the phone. And then there are regulations that are made at the beginning of the year with a cost for possible transgressions, to be given to a charity of the players’ choice.

“There was a fine for answering the phone, at a certain point a mobile phone rings, two players come to tell me whose it was, I go in and tell them they had to pay.

“The player took out his wallet, took the amount for the fine and then answered his partner to tell her they were going to dinner together. What team was it? I’m not saying, it’s better that way.”

Inter dedicated InterTV to former Brazil star Ronaldo yesterday with a post on their Twitter page.

The Brazilian striker spent five years of his career with the Nerazzurri from 1997 to 2002, quickly becoming a fan favourite thanks to his quick pace and devastating shot. Ronaldo struggled with serious knee injuries during his time in Milan, making only 24 appearances in his last three seasons with the Nerazzurri.

Inter posted a short highlight reel of Ronaldo alongside the caption: “One word to describe Ronaldo. Today the programming of InterTV is dedicated to him.”
