Inter outcast Gabriel Barbosa has said he is determined to help Santos to a second Brazilian Cup title this year.

The Peixe will make their bow in the latest edition of the tournament on Thursday evening when they face third-tier side Luverdense in the first leg of their last 16 tie, hoping to collect national silverware for the first time since 2010.

Barbosa is the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer in the competition with 15 goals scored and has twice finished as the tournament’s top-scorer, but the forward has told reporters that he is hungry for more success.

“The Brazilian Cup is a very important competition and I’m honoured to be part of its history by twice finishing as top-scorer,” he said.

“They’re numbers that remain in the history books and mean something, but our target is to win the trophy. The cup is an objective for us this season and we’ll work hard to win it.”

Barbosa returned to Santos on a twelve-month loan in January after making 10 appearances for Inter during the 2016-17 season, scoring one goal.

Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin is edging closer to signing for Inter in the summer, according to Primocanale.

Perin has made 150 appearances for the Grifone since making his first-team debut in 2011 and is now looking to make a big step in his career, while the club are aware they will need to raise money from player sales in the upcoming transfer window.

The Italian international had been strongly linked with a move to Napoli in recent weeks, but reports from Portugal that the Partenopei are close to signing Rui Patricio mean that this is no longer a feasible option, as Perin would not want to move to a club where he would be a reserve.

He is also unlikely to move to Milan, despite being very close to the Rossoneri last summer, as they have now secured Napoli’s outgoing keeper Pepe Reina with an eye to replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is headed towards Paris Saint-Germain.

According to the Genoa-based news outlet, therefore, Inter have now become the most likely destination for the 25 year-old, considering that Perin is thought to prefer staying in Italy to a move abroad.

The Nerazzurri could look to sell current keeper Samir Handanovic in the summer should they fail to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League, as the Slovenian is wanted by several clubs across Europe, and would this be in need of a new first-choice goalkeeper.

NON SOTTOVALUTARE L’AVVERSARIO – Giuseppe Bergomi si è allenato oggi ad Appiano Gentile insieme agli uomini di Luciano Spalletti, che sabato sera affronteranno un Sassuolo già matematicamente salvo: «La sfida con il Sassuolo? Parliamo di 3 punti fondamentali, poi penso che l’Inter debba fare una prestazione seria ma le ultime partite dicono proprio questo: la squadra sta bene, ma non bisogna sottovalutare una squadra che arriva a San Siro con la mente sgombra. Sono situazioni pericolose, ma l’Inter è focalizzata sul raggiungimento del risultato. Adesso la squadra è mentalmente forte, sa reagire alle situazioni difficili e complicate ed è ripartita benissimo a Udine perché sa quello che deve fare ed è in salute. Rischiano anche la giocata e li vedi che si divertono: ora ci sono questi due impegni, penso che il calendario è importante ma conta di più come ci arrivi e l’Inter ora sta bene. Pubblico delle grandi occasioni anche per Inter-Sassuolo? Bisogna fare un plauso ai tifosi dell’Inter, sono ormai due anni che riempiono lo stadio e si gioca anche per loro. Inter are still unsure if Joao Miranda will recover in time to start Saturday’s match at home to Sassuolo, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Nerazzurri are two points behind fourth-placed Lazio with two games remaining in Serie A and must win both fixtures to secure a place in next season’s Champions League, despite picking up three victories in their last four.

Brazilian centre-back Miranda is hoping to shake off the thigh problem that forced him to sit out Sunday’s win against Udinese in time to face the Neroverdi this weekend, and returned to training with the rest of the Inter squad on Thursday.

However the Milanese publication believe it is still too early to work out if he will be able to return to the starting XI. Should Miranda miss out Luciano Spalletti will confirm Andrea Ranocchia alongside Milan Skriniar in the centre of defence.

Matias Vecino will return from suspension on Saturday and is expected to start with Marcelo Brozovic in midfield, while Antonio Candreva, Rafinha and Ivan Perisic will retain their places in the side behind lone striker Mauro Icardi.

The mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala has claimed that Milan “are still looking for new areas” to build a new stadium, whereas Inter would prefer to stay at San Siro.

Upon leaving a meeting in the city centre on Thursday morning, which the Nerazzurri were expected to attend but did not, Sala was asked by reporters about the two Milanese clubs’ plans for San Siro going forward.

“Milan are still looking for areas, because unlike Inter they are aiming to build a new stadium,” he said.

“All I can say to the people of Milan is that we will try to find a solution before the summer holidays, and then if it’s not possible we can at least say that we tried.

“It would be a shame though, because San Siro isn’t at the same level of the stadiums in other international cities, despite it being a very charming venue.

“A new stadium could also be useful for the city.”

Inter are among a handful of Serie A clubs ready to register a “B” team to compete in Italy’s lower leagues from the following season, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

FIGC sub-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta confirmed on Wednesday that Italy’s Football Federation wishes to introduce second teams into Serie C (known until last season as Lega Pro) for the 2018-19 campaign, which will be filled by under-21 players and a maximum of two under-23 players.

“As of today the FIGC are working to formalise the list of criteria that clubs will need to follow in order for their second team to be chosen,” the Milanese publication wrote on Wednesday.

“Amongst the clubs already prepared to submit teams are Juventus, Milan, Inter, Atalanta, Napoli, Roma and Fiorentina.”

Inter’s “B” team would start by playing in Serie C but would be eligible for promotion to Serie B, provided the first team is not relegated from Serie A (no first and second teams from the same club would be allowed to face each other).

They would also be eligible for ‘formal relegation’, although they would not be allowed to play in Serie D as the players involved would lose their status as professionals.

Nothing has been officially confirmed for the moment however as talks between the various parties are still ongoing.
