Napoli Optimistic They’ll Sign Inter Linked Mertens To Contract Extension

Napoli remain optimistic that they will be able to sign Dries Mertens to a new contract just shortly according to a report from Italian news outlet FCInterNews.it.

The Belgian attacker’s current deal with the Stadio San Paolo club is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and a contract extension has been tabled.

Napoli are willing to give Mertens a new two year deal with an annual salary of €4 million plus bonuses as well as a €2 million signing on fee.

This offer is not exactly what Mertens is after though with it understood he wants €6 million per year for what will probably be the last big contract of his playing career.

Inter have also tabled an offer to Mertens due to his expiring contract status which consists of a €5 million annual salary plus bonuses which take it up to around €6 million a year.

Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta is refusing to pull the offer and although Napoli are currently ahead, the lure of joining a team more ready to win trophies could swing things in Inter’s favour when Mertens eventually makes a decision.

Ex-Inter Owner Moratti: “Inter President Zhang Certainly Will Have Thought About Barcelona’s Lionel Messi”

Former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has shared his belief that current Inter president Steven Zhang is bound to have thought about the possibility of signing Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

In the past few days Moratti has not hidden his desire to see Messi, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, at Inter and a number of reports have also speculated about the Argentine potentially swapping the Blaugrana for Nerazzurri.

“Knowing Zhang’s courage, he certainly will have thought about it. It would be a beautiful thing, it would give oxygen to Serie A and high hopes for Inter. My insistence on the subject as an external subject, however, is not worth much,” Moratti remarked in an interview with Italian broadcaster TeleLombardia show QSVS late last night.

Moratti proceeded to share his views on what he thinks should happen with the currently suspended season and what must come first in these difficult times.

“I wouldn’t think too much about this season. Right now there is no normality and we must do the right thing and that is do not put players and people at risk.

“It is not yet clear when it will be possible to recover, but as long as there is no vaccine, the risk will continue to exist. We don’t even know if the season will start and in what way.

“Be that as it may, either finish this season or don’t do the next. In September, however, there will be a risk, sending thousands of people to the stadium can be a serious mistake. The situation is tragic.”

In conclusion, Moratti praised the Milanese for how they have dealt with the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic but did hit out at the Italian government and other countries governments for how they handled things.

“In my opinion the Milanese have done very well and those who work on the front lines in hospitals perform very well.

“The government did what it could but it also did wrong, but it is difficult to be controversial in these moments because the situation is dramatic.

“Abroad, we also have an idea of what is happening. Italy was an unprepared nation, then everyone made their own reasoning and found themselves in trouble, just like what happened in the United States and the United Kingdom.”

Ex-Inter Goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi: “Handanovic Can Play At This Level Until He’s 40 Years Old”

In an interview with Italian news outlet PassioneInter.com, former Inter goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi has spoken on a number of Inter related topics, starting with his move to Inter.

“I arrived in the summer of 2010 and there was an infectious enthusiasm, even during the pre-season training camp. Many top players were not there as it had been the world cup but there were thousands of fans waiting for us at the end of training.

“I came from Sampdoria and it was all new to me. It was like I had just went to another planet. It was the beginning of four years for me in which I had great satisfaction. We won three trophies and the satisfaction will remain indelible in my career.”

Next Castellazzi reflected on Rafa Benitez’s spell in charge of Inter.

“Anyone who came in after Mourinho would have found it difficult. The players had given everything in the previous year, starting on the same levels would have been complicated.

“When he left he still had the results on his side but it was obvious there was never a connection with the management even though in January we were still close to first.

“There had been many injuries and perhaps that did not help him to create the same environment that Mourinho had created.”

Castellazzi then went on to speak abut his Inter debut.

“My debut as a starter came against Tottenham. It was a wonderful football experience to make by debut for Inter as a starter against Tottenham, who were a great team.

“It was too bad that we lost. I conceded three goals but I tried to do my best. I do not think I made any serious faults for any goals. It is a memory that I hold tight to me.”

Castellazzi was Inter’s back-up goalkeeper for his spell with the club and spoke on what it is like to not be the starting goalkeeper.

“Being the back-up goalkeeper is a difficult role to fulfill as you know from the start that you will not play but you still have to train as if you were going to play.

“I lived as if I were the starter in order to make myself ready. I was aware of the mental and physical approach which was required during the week and if the opportunity to play on Sunday arose, you were ready.”

Castellazzi then reflected on Daniele Padelli’s recent spell in the team that came about after Samir Handanovic got injured.

“Daniele played in games where the stakes were high and the opponents were great. He had not played for a while and some of the criticism he received was too fierce.

“Replacing Handnaovic is not easy, people expect the most. Unjust pressure was created. On a positive note, he had two very good matches in the Europa League. If he kept playing he would have done well, he is an excellent second choice.”

Next he discussed Inter captain Samir Handanovic.

“He gives absolute security. I like how he manages the role. He knows how to save shots and has a certain level of security that surprised me. I have seen how much he has grown over the years. He can play until he is 40-years-old.

“He deserves to win a trophy for all the good he has done both for himself and for the team.”

He also spoke on several young goalkeepers who have caught his eye recently, many of whom have drawn links to Inter in recent weeks as they seek a player capable of being Handanovic’s back-up and eventual successor.

“I like Ionut Andrei Radu and Juan Musso. I like what Radu did at Genoa. He is someone to be considered for the future both by Inter and other clubs. Musso surprised me a lot, I didn’t know him before he arrived and he has improved so much in recent years.

“I also like Emil Audero, he is very good and there is also Alessio Cragno. There are many goalkeepers who can blossom and we must give them confidence.”

During his spell with Inter, Castellazzi made a total of 36 appearances across all competitions, in which he kept nine clean sheets.

Christian Vieri: “The Serie A Season Must Be Completed, Inter Are Strong”

Former Inter striker Christian Vieri has shared his view that the 2019/20 Serie A season must be completed as part of a live interview which was broadcast on Instagram.

“In my opinion the season must be completed. Among other things, it was a beautiful season, as had not been seen for years. Lazio are doing something incredible, Inzaghi is working really well,” he began.

Vieri then went to comment on each of the sides currently occupying the top three spots in the league in Juventus, Lazio and Inter.

As things currently stand, reigning Italian champions Juventus are sitting at the top of the table with 63 points to their name having played 26 matches.

Lazio are in second place and breathing right down the neck of the Bianconeri with them being just one point behind on 62 whilst Inter are in third with 54 points having played a game less than each of their Serie A title rivals.

“Juventus are in a league of their own. Is this Lazio like mine? I think mines was even stronger. Inter? Inter are strong and are up there even if they are a little detached from the other two.”

Vieri had spells at each of the three clubs vying for the title and it was at Inter where he shone brightest. He made 190 appearances across all competitions for Inter in which he netted 122 goals.
