Italian PFA President Tommasi: “I Warned Everyone About The Risk Of Continuing To Play & Train”

Damiano Tommasi, the president of the Italian players association has revealed what some directors have accused him of due to his handling of the current situation.

“Some directors accused me of terrorism. I have learned one thing from the epidemic and that is our will and our future plans are pure dialectical exercise, the agenda is called the Coronavirus, unfortunately,” he wrote in a letter to Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

Tommasi briefly touched upon Juventus’ decision to reach an agreement with their players over salaries before the AIC could speak with everyone and come to a general agreement.

“Nobody overstepped anyone. We were constantly updated and when players and clubs get along I do not see why the AIC should feel shelved. We work to have the clubs and players together.”

Tommasi then went on to recall warning everyone about the dangers associated with continuing to play and train even whilst the situation was in its early stages.

“I warned everyone about the risks of continuing to play and train. Those were the days when attempts were made to reopen the airports of Seville and Madrid to allow Roma and Getafe to travel.”

He then went on to reiterate the role the the AIC have to play during this crisis situation and admitted that the decisions made may not be popular with everyone.

“We will have, together with the other managers, to make choices and act even at the cost of appearing inconclusive.

“We have the role of guiding footballers during this dilemma, health emergency and economic emergencies. Our task is to summarise things not so much to just tell them what they want to hear but to tell them what it is correct to.

“We need to make the right choices, even if sometimes they will be unpopular. All decisions are forced, some more, some less, by the economic emergency that seems to be doing more harm than the health emergency.

“It is a very slippery ground but it will be the real problem from here on out. Total closure is relatively easy to share, it will be the gradual opening that will make us fight.”

Tomassi, who is perhaps best known for his time as a player at Roma, then went on to insist that everyone wants football to return but it remains unclear when the circumstances will allow this.

“It is needless to say that we all want to play, just like we all want to go to the beach and reopen the schools. When will be right time to do this, when will we have no risk to health and I am not just referring to the health of athletes.

“In fact, I fear that the real discussion will not concern physical contact or not, the doors open or not, but it will be about travelling or not and if so how.

“The players will do their part. We just have to understand what that is.”

Next Serie A Season Could Start At End Of August

The 2020/21 Serie A season could start at the end of August or in mid-September according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

The current season is on hold due to the global Coronavirus pandemic and there appears to be a real desire for the season to be resumed and then concluded and due to this, the start date of next season will likely have to be pushed back.

By starting on Sunday August 30 or Sunday September 13, there will be enough time for all domestic and continental competitions to be played prior to June 1, the day players will be released by their teams to join their respective national teams for the European Championship’s and Copa America, which were moved from this Summer to next due to the pandemic.

Starting beyond the latter date will make it particularly difficult for things to be finished by the above deadline.

Italian Report Highlights 2 Potential Solutions For Football Season To Resume & Finish

There are two hypotheses out there on how the current football season can be resumed and finished according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

European football’s governing body UEFA, the European Club Association and UEFA member federations are working around the clock to try and come up with the best solution.

The first idea is to resume play at the end of May or beginning of June, on either May 31 or June 3. Domestic games would be played every three days for the first three weeks in June and in the fourth week the Champions League and Europa League will resume. By doing this, all competitions will finish by August 3 just like UEFA want.

The other idea is there in the event that football does not resume until mid-June. If this is the case, domestic games will be played and finished by August 2 and then the Champions League and Europa League will be played and concluded by the end of August.

Inter Could Sign Arsenal Striker Aubameyang For €35m In The Summer

Inter may be able to acquire Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for as little as €35 million in the upcoming Summer transfer window according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Nerazzurri have seemingly identified the Arsenal and Gabon national team striker as a player who could replace Lautaro Martinez if he departs the club for Barcelona.

Back in January reports suggested Aubameyang could cost any interest clubs in the region of €50 million but now Gazzetta are stating Inter may be able to land him for a sum of €35 million.

The report goes on to state that Inter may be able to take advantage of Ousmane Dembele’s price plummeting too and could possibly acquire him in a swap deal of sorts.

Barcelona paid over €100 million to sign him a few Summers ago but after failing to live up to expectations, his value is very far from that.

The Milan based newspaper also state that Inter might sign Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea in the upcoming transfer window. Inter were interested in him back in January but were put off by Chelsea’s demands but things could be different in the Summer as he will have just a year left on his deal with the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Inter Recall Seven Players They Granted Leave To Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

The seven players Inter granted leave to will return over the course of this week according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

Due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, Inter allowed Romelu Lukaku, Diego Godin, Ashley Young, Victor Moses, Christian Eriksen, Samir Handanovic and Marcelo Brozovic to return home to be with their families.

All barring Godin, who is likely to arrive back last, are only a short flight away from Milan and upon their returns, they will all have to enter into an obligatory two week period of self-isolation – something all seven players have already had to do due to Juventus defender Daniele Rugani testing positive for Coronavirus just days after Inter played the Bianconeri.

Despite it remaining a complete mystery as to whether or not the season will even resume, Inter are recalling the players now to minimise the risk of potentially being caught out and having to do without them for the start of training or games.

Filip Stankovic: “I Miss Football, I Dream Of Making My Debut For Inter”

Inter Primavera goalkeeper Filip Stankovic has admitted that he is missing football amid the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the pandemic, football in Italy has been put on hold for a number of weeks and it remains completely unknown as to whether or not the season will even resume given the circumstances.

“I miss football and going out and being with my friends but I have taken this situation very seriously. I am staying at home with my family and I am following the training program that Inter sent me,” he remarked in an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

“In ten years time I will remember the faces of the doctors and nurses that were marked by the masks and long days without breaks and perhaps after sleeping only a couple of hours. They are fighting against a sneaky enemy and are real heroes.”

He was then asked what he is missing most due to the pandemic.

“I miss my daily life. I miss playing football, going to training and seeing my girlfriend. Fortunately we have been able to video call one another for a while.

“There is a chat with my Primavera teammates and we speak to each other every day and we sometimes also play the PlayStation together.”

Next he was asked if his father, the legendary Dejan Stankovic, has given him any advice to follow and discussed his father’s coaching career.

“He has told me to respect all the rules. He is with us and now we are happy,” he continued.

“What do I wish for him to do as manager of Red Star Belgrade? I wish for him to win at least 50% of what he won as a player, it would not be too bad.

“I would be a dream for me to be coached by him at Inter one day but the experience I am having under Antonio Conte is very beautiful.”

Stankovic was then asked how it felt to recently be named on the bench of the first team and if he always thinks about making his debut.

“It was a unique feeling to be amongst top players. You always learn from them. Making my debut for Inter is a real dream of mine.”

The 18-year-old shot-stopper then went on to conclude the interview by revealing he is inspired by fellow Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

“Handanovic inspires me, he is Slovenian, just like my mum is. He tells me to work, work and work and I will keep the other advice he gives me for myself.”

Altobelli: “Lautaro Martinez Is Worth The Same As Neymar, Inter Should Offer Messi The Chance To Play In Milan”

In an interview with Milan based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, legendary Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has reaffirmed his belief that Lautaro Martinez is worth the same as Neymar amid continued reports that Barcelona wish to sign Lautaro in the upcoming transfer window.

“I said it eight months ago that Lautaro Martinez is worth the same as Neymar to me. I really mean it. He is not even 23-years-old yet, he is young, he is a real talent, a serious boy, one of the strongest in the world in his role and he has shown what kind of player he is,” he started.

“I understand that he will be flattered when clubs like Barcelona are looking at him but I feel like telling him this. Inter are a club who wants to win and they can do it so stay and win at Inter because the Nerazzurri have a project which is destined to see them raise trophies.”

Altobelli then went on to speak about the financial power that Inter now have thanks to being owned by Suning and no longer under such strict Financial Fair Play regulations.

“Inter spent so much last Summer and it means that Zhang has no financial problems of any kind. Inter can afford to pass up on any offers made for players and are able to buy anyone they want. If Lautaro wants to play with Messi, why don’t Inter offer Leo the chance to come and play in Milan?”

Altobelli proceeded to sing the praises of Inter striker Romelu Lukaku who has had a stellar first season with the club having netted 23 goals in 35 appearances to date.

“At first many were perplexed about him but I wasn’t. I already knew all about him as I follow English football. He is good in the penalty box, very fast and impossible to stop. He has also proven to be a great professional and someone at the total disposal of the club he works for.”

Next he was asked which areas of the team he thinks Inter need to improve upon.

“Everything can be improved, for heaven’s sake, there can never be too many champions in any department but the attack is not where I would make the first moves. Nor in defence, where there are players who would be the starters in some other top European clubs. I would look to improve the two wings.”

He then went on to praise Inter manager Antonio Conte for the improvement Inter have made this year: “Conte has done a great job this year, there is a clear and recognisable project.

In conclusion he was asked who he thinks will win the Serie A title should the season resume.

“There was a lot of balance before the stop and it is a pity that this season was interrupted. Lazio will be obnoxious and they can do it and woe to anyone who says that Lazio were a surprise.”

Former Inter President Moratti: “Messi Isn’t A Forbidden Dream For Inter”

In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Rai this morning, former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has shared his belied that it is not impossible for Inter to be able to sign Lionel Messi.

Moratti famously tried to sign a young Messi during his tenure in charge at the club but upon realising all that Barcelona were doing to help Messi from a health point of view, he decided to relinquish his interest.

Since then, Inter have drawn links to the multi-time world player of the year, particularly in recent months once it became apparent that he had a clause in his contract which allows him to free himself.

“I don’t think it’s a forbidden dream at all. Maybe it wasn’t even before this misfortune. Messi is at the end of his contract and it could certainly be attempted to bring him in.

“I don’t know if this situation will change anything, but I think we will see strange things at the end of the year.”

Moratti then went on to briefly discuss Inter striker Lautaro Martinez who has been strongly linked to Barcelona.

“He is a very good lad, he cares about his career but, as I have said before, we have to see if he will be part of a deal for someone like Messi.”

Moratti proceeded to talk about the current situation the world finds itself in due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

“Explanations on what is happening should be given more by scientists and the administration. It’s a very unfortunate situation. The situation is very difficult but the Milanese and Lombardian people have behaved well.

“It is an experience that will stick with everyone for life and we hope it will be useful for the future.”

Moratti then went on to discuss the Coronavirus pandemic’s impact on football.

“I cannot understand if there is an obligation to finish the season and therefore sacrifice the next one. Gravina is absolutely right to look ahead at trouble that could arise from any type of decision.

“At a time when everything is changing, we cannot rely on old rules and we must have courage to do different things. Ceferin has insisted things should be finished normally but normality no longer exists.

“22 teams in Serie A? It would perhaps be the right thing, but it would be a very long season. I do not know how much we will be able to put the pieces back together.

“The decision must be made calmly and it is perhaps too early to make it. As Ranieri said, you must also understand the health of the players.

“We must be careful. It’s impossible to play with full stadiums. Great care must be taken in stadiums and we must not repeat the mistakes we have already made.

“Unfortunately, to finish this season you have to take a considerable risk, not finishing it means having to find the fairest solution.”

In conclusion, Moratti shared his belief that some of the wages of Serie A players should be used to help out lower down in the Italian football pyramid.

“The players were the first to realise the seriousness of the situation. The salaries which will be partly spared by their clubs should go to football lower down. I believe that many sacrifices should be made and the state should think about it.”
