Inter Treble Hero Dejan Stankovic: “Juventus Still Haven’t Managed To Do What We Did In 2010”

Red Star Belgrade coach and former Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic answered questions from fans about his past and present in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia earlier today.

First, he discussed how he was doing considering the ongoing Coronavirus emergency.

“Fine, we’re all fine. Let’s deal with this situation with respect and intelligence, staying at home.”

The 41-year-old spoke about which of his famous goals against Schalke, Genoa and AC Milan that he prefers.

“Good question. The strangest one, against Schalke, whose ninth anniversary is today, even if the match didn’t go well. The one in Genoa was the most difficult, the one against AC Milan wasn’t the only one like that.”

He revealed that the team were deeply affected by that loss to Schalke.

“Not mine, but the whole teams. We lost everything in a few days, after that game we lost the derby badly. But we were stretched out, there were a lot of injuries. We were unlucky.”

Stankovic spoke about the progress of his son, Filip, who is part of the Inter Primavera squad.

“He’s good, he’s on his way. He’s doing well, he’s taking advice. He even spent a month with the first team, the only advice I could give him was to listen, as well as work.

“In that group, with Antonio Conte, there’s so much to learn. I’m happy because he deserves everything, he has worked since he was a child. We needed a goalkeeper and we chose him.”

He revealed the reason why his son decided to be a goalkeeper.

“Yes, training was tiring for him so he chose to wear gloves.”

He spoke about the strengths of the Inter squad in 2010 and the Lazio squad in 2000 and which team was better.

“They’re two different teams, football changed every year. They were two very tough teams, Lazio won compared to how strong we were, we could have done better in the Champions League too.

“We wrote history with Inter. Over time I see what we’ve done, something really incredible. A difficult goal to reach, Juve for example hasn’t yet managed to repeat something like that. The treble remains in history.”

The 41-year-old touched on the team’s attempt to rebuild after the Treble winning campaign.

“Yes, even though we tried to build the following year, changing the team a little. I can only thank Massimo Moratti and his family for what he gave us, then cycles begin and end. But we gave everything we had.”

He spoke about when the team realized that they wouldn’t be as strong in the 2010/11 season.

“We were working, even the year before we had won but we were still missing something. José Mourinho’s second year was very important, with player choices, lineups and the personality we had. We wanted to win everything, Inter can’t choose which titles to win and not.

“I’d say we were lucky in Kiev, so we thought why not take advantage of it. We beat Chelsea, then in the last 2 months we played with 13-14 players, only recovering a little. There was nothing else in mind but winning on May 22 to close the circle and write history.

“The difference, besides Mourinho, was made by the men in the locker room. In the last 45 days we were finished, but Mourinho pulled something more out of us. We also grew up on a human level.”

Stankovic touched on which derby was his favourite to play in.

“In 2004, at my first derby, I scored, we played a beautiful first half and then Milan asphalted us. My favourite derby is the 4-0 derby with Mourinho, we could have scored more. We were spectacular.”

The former Inter midfielder highlighted what it means to play in the Milanese derby.

“Our derby’s were fought, but we respected each other. I played the derby for nine years, something could happen on the field, but beyond that, we didn’t carry anything off it.

“There was great respect, the players respected their shirts and their fans. I went from Red Star-Partizan, where I played in the Red Star jersey and also won as captain.

“The Milan derby is prestigious, incomparable with nothing else. But I’m also keeping the ones in Belgrade and Rome. Even though the one in Milan is a gentleman’s derby.”

He touched on which coach he felt most inspired by.

“I’ve worked with great gentlemen before coaches, I get what I need from everyone. I’m having fun coaching Red Star, I take it very seriously. Then I went from Eriksson to Mancini to Mourinho, with all the coaches I had in Serbia.

“I take everything I need from them and build my football. I see what’s important for the players, not giving up, having respect, knowing how it works off the pitch. I quit recently so I still know the players well, I’ll try to create my own identity.”

Stankovic then told a story about Roberto Mancini.

“Everyone made fun of me because I was Mancio’s ‘son’, but I also felt protected by him as a teammate. And when he was a coach, I learned a lot from him, he was already a coach on the pitch. I grew up with him a lot, he was a pain in the ass, but it was right.”

The Red Star coach spoke about what Inter need to do to beat Juventus for the league title.

“I think the gap has narrowed a lot, which is what was hoped for with Conte doing a great job with the players. With a few top-notch purchases, without taking anything away from the current squad, they can be a candidate for the Scudetto.

“I don’t know whether or not the break will be good for those who fight for the Scudetto, we’ll see when it starts again. But Inter can do great things, a little piece is missing and it will be a top Inter.”

The former Nerazzurri star touched on the other team in the title race, Lazio.

“Simone Inzaghi is doing a great job, he deserves a renewal. Now he’s a model of a young coach from whom you can learn a lot. I’d like my team to play football similar to his. Lazio can still fight until the end, the team has been playing together for years and it can be a surprise.”

Finally, Stankovic spoke about whether he was close to joining rivals AC Milan.

“I don’t know, when I was 18-19 I was close to PSG and Roma along with Lazio, as well as the Glasgow Rangers. Savicevic knew me, but I had no contact with AC Milan.”

Lega Serie A To Meet Tomorrow To Discuss Next Steps & Players Salary Issue

Lega Serie A will meet the clubs tomorrow to discuss the ongoing Coronavirus emergency, the next steps and the controversial topic of players’ salaries, according to a report from Italian news broadcaster ANSA earlier today.

The report details how a digital meeting has been scheduled for 12:00pm tomorrow to discuss what next steps need to be taken in regard to the season, a return to training and a possible calendar. One of the most divisive topics will be regarding players’ salaries and how long they should be suspended for. Italian clubs have suggested that they should not be expected to pay their players a full salary for the stop period.

The AIC disagree, the report continues, and have only agreed for a suspension of players’ salaries for March. Juventus are one step ahead of the rest of the clubs and have already reached an agreement with their squad to cut their salaries for the four month stop period, which will save the Turin based club around €90 million.

UEFA Dismiss Reports Claiming August 3rd As Deadline For European Cups To Have Been Played As Being False

UEFA have distanced themselves from the comments made by president Aleksander Ceferin that suggested that the European cups must be finished by August 3rd, according to a report from Italian media outlet Calcioefinanza.it today.

The report details how UEFA have not finalised a precise date yet for the completion of both the Europa League and the Champions League. They are currently analysing all options with the ECA and the European leagues in the group that was set up in March. The priority of all members is to preserve public health, not risk that just to complete the season.

Following this, the next aim is to find a way to organise a calendar that allows for the completion of all competitions, both domestic and continental, the report continues. Options include playing games in July and August, depending on the situation in that time as well as the authorisation of the national authorities.

AIC President Damiano Tommasi: “The Players Will Play Our Part In Trying To Finish The Season”

AIC president Damiano Tommasi discussed the ongoing Coronavirus emergency and UEFA’s August 3rd deadline in an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai News 24 earlier today.

“The news from UEFA to try to finish by August 3rd gives us a time limit. If we have time to finish the leagues, it’s obvious that we would all like to do it, but the decision-making process today starts from the scientific community and we hope there are the conditions to restart to finish before August 3rd, as requested by UEFA.”

Tommasi then spoke about the controversial topic of suspending players’ salaries for the period affected by the Coronavirus suspension.

“With Lega Serie A we didn’t go into details, also because the first deadlines are 20th April. Today we don’t know if it will finish earlier, also because UEFA and ECA are asking us to try to finish the seasons. The players will play their part, as always.”

Some Italian clubs have suggested that players’ salaries should be suspended for the months that there is no training or games, due to the heavy impact of the contagion on the teams. Not long are teams not able to earn money through ticket sales, but they are also at risk of losing vital money from television rights and sponsors.

Juventus were one step ahead of their opponents, already reaching an agreement with their squad to suspend their salaries, which will save them €90 million. There will be multiple meetings next week between the interested parties to decide on the next steps.

Inter Are Not In A Hurry To Offer A New Contract To Barcelona Target Lautaro Martinez

Inter are in no hurry to rush a contract offer to Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez, despite the growing presence of Barcelona, according to a report from Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset earlier today.

The report details how the Blaugrana are incredibly keen to sign the 22-year-old Argentine striker, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023, as they believe he would be the perfect replacement for the aging Luis Suarez. The Blaugrana have reportedly prepared a €10 million offer to convince Lautaro, but Inter are not afraid.

The Nerazzurri are prepared to increase Lautaro’s wages from €1.5 million a season to €3 million a season, including bonuses and image rights. Inter will meet with the player’s agent, Beto Yaqué, in July, after the expiry of the €111 million release clause that’s currently present in Lautaro’s existing contract, which expires after the July 15th. The Argentine striker has scored 16 goals and provided four assists in 31 appearances so far this season.

Gabigol’s Agent Junior Pedroso: “Inter Closed The Doors On Him permanently, He Was Never Going Back”

Junior Pedroso, agent of former Inter striker Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa, discussed the player’s transfer to Brazilian side Flamengo and the other offers the club received in an interview with Italian media outlet Calciomercato.com today.

First, he discussed the difficulty of the move from Milan to Brazil.

“Less difficult than it looked. Let’s say it was a useful deal for everyone. Inter wanted to negotiate the sale, Flamengo wanted to buy him and Gabriel wanted to return to his club. The deal was long in terms of timing because the guy didn’t want to negotiate during the most delicate period of last season, when important trophies were being played. He didn’t want any interference or distractions.”

Pedroso then touched on how professional Flamengo were in the negotiations.

“Let’s say that the skill was in being able to move forward without having excessive media pressure on the negotiation during those weeks. I take this opportunity to say that Flamengo has been very professional with its management, including Mr. Marcos Braz and Mr. Bruno Spindel.”

Gabigol’s agent then discussed offers that had arrived from other European clubs.

“Yes, we had offers from two top clubs, one from the Bundesliga and another from the Premier League. Gabriel and his family thought long and hard and decided that Flamengo was the right choice to continue his career at a high level.”

He touched on how Gabigol never expected to return to Milan due to Inter’s clear preference that he move away.

“Have you ever heard Gabriel say, ‘I’m doing great in Brazil, now I want to show Inter that I can come back and do well there’ or something like that? No, never. The reality is that there was no way back, Inter closed the doors on Gabigol permanently. It was never an option. I can tell he’s overjoyed that way.”

Finally, Pedroso discussed how happy Gabigol was with Flamengo.

“With his Flamengo, with a club that welcomed him in a great way, his teammates who love him, the fans who give him all kinds of attention. He has an extraordinary coach like Jorge Jesus who has helped him. That’s all he needs.”

Gabigol had the best season of his career last year with Flamengo. The 23-year-old Brazilian striker made 41 appearances across all competitions, for a total of 3561 minutes. In that time, he scored 34 goals and provided 11 assists, guiding the club to both the league title and the coveted Copa Libertadores.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina: “We Could End In September Or October But It’s Only An Idea”

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina discussed the possibility of extending the league until September in order to properly finish this season in an interview on the TV show ‘’La Domenica Sportiva’, hosted by Italian broadcaster Rai Sport.

“It’s an idea. The only serious way to deal with such a serious emergency is to end the 2019-2020 season competitions this year anyway. We are working on a whole series of ideas to better manage this situation.”

Gravina then revealed some of the dates that the FIGC are considering.

“One hypothetical date to restart is May 17 but we know, and I stress it once again, that it is only an idea. Ending in September or October is a way to avoid compromising not only the 2019-20 season, but also the 20-21 season.”

UEFA have agreed to postpone the upcoming European Championship until next summer in order to allow leagues to finish with regularity. They have also indicated that domestic leagues should be fully completed by the 3rd August, in order to allow time for the European cups to be played regularly next season.

Serie A, like most other leagues around Europe, has been suspended until further notice due to the ongoing Coronavirus emergency. Due to the lack of football, many clubs are worried about their financial security and are looking to cut players’ salaries for a few months, an idea not appreciated by the AIC, who have only agreed to suspend wages for March.

Inter Owned Striker Mauro Icardi Could Join Juventus In Exchange For Two Bianconeri Players

A report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport has analysed what will happen to Inter owned striker Mauro Icardi.

The report details how French club Paris Saint Germain are not interested in enacting the €70 million buy option attached to the 27-year-old Argentine striker, who has impressed on the pitch in France this season. Inter are now preparing for his return to Milan and are already looking for a new home for the player.

One idea for Icardi is to send him to Juventus in exchange for two Bianconeri players, the report continues. Last summer Inter were happy to send Icardi to the Bianconeri in exchange for Paulo Dybala, although considering the Juventus forward’s performances this season it is unlikely that the Turin based club will even consider this. However, the Nerazzurri would also be happy to take two players in exchange for the Argentine striker, although this is still only an idea for now and no names have been proposed.
