Current Situation Could Disrupt Several Current Plans To Reform Football & Lead To New Reform Ideas

The current crisis situation could lead to several ideas for the future of football being abandoned according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

The new look Club World Cup looks set to be moved from 2021 due to the European Championship’s having to be moved from this Summer to then as a result of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The current Club World Cup is contested each year by the current continental champions plus a few guest sides and it is supposed to be changing to a 24 team tournament every four years but it remains to be seen what will happen with it.

The UEFA Nations League finals have been put on hold for the time being too and clubs are said to be pushing for more dates to play club games meaning national team games could be compressed into just three international breaks in the future.

The report from the Rome based newspaper goes on to add that all top leagues could be reduced to 18 teams, if not already that size, the Champions League could be reduced to no more than 17 games per club, playoffs between national teams could be reduced and plans to expand the European Championship’s and World Cup to 24 and 48 teams respectively may be scrapped.

UEFA Could Reduce Champions League & Europa League To Help Leagues Finish

European football’s governing body UEFA are to meet tomorrow to hold further discussions over the way forward for football during this crisis period according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

UEFA met with their member federations and league boards among many other people almost a week ago to hold initial talks and during this meeting a commitment was made by leagues to finish their campaigns by June 30 at the latest.

As per this report, UEFA could cut down on the remaining Champions League and Europa League matches and get rid of the upcoming international break to help leagues to finish.

The report from the Rome based newspaper goes on to state that Serie A could start back up again on either May 2 or 3 with the majority of the rest of the season played out that month.

If Serie A cannot restart until May 9 or 10 or as late as May 16 or 17, things will become very complicated and the domestic season would almost certainly have to carry on past June 30.

FIFA President Infantino: “Health Must Come First, Let’s Save Football From A Crisis That Risks Being Irreversible”

Gianni Infantino, the president of world football’s governing body FIFA, has spoken on a range of topics related to the current crisis football is facing as a result of the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.

“Health must come first and then everything else. Club management should be hoping for the best but also preparing for the worst,” he started an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Milan based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Without panicking, let me be clear, we will play again when we can, without putting anybody’s health at risk. Federations and leagues are ready to follow the recommendations of governments and the World Health Organisation.

“I wish to thank all doctors, nurses and all those who are risking their lives to save others, they are heroes.”

He was then asked what FIFA can do during this crisis period.

“We have shown a spirit of cooperation and solidarity with Europe and South America. Now let’s think about the national team schedule and about the temporary modifications and dispensations for the regulations on the status of players and transfers to protect contracts and adapt registration periods. Tough measures are needed but there is no choice. We will all have to make sacrifices.”

Infantino then went on to insist he is ready to help out as and when required.

“In such situations, health is the top priority and exceptional measures are needed. I am and will always be ready to help those in need. I have said this to Ceferin on the telephone.”

He then spoke on the financial impact that the virus has and will continue to have on football across the globe and whether it could lead to reform in football.

“We do not know when it returns to normal but we look at the opportunities. We can perhaps reform world football by taking a step back, with different formats and less tournaments but more interesting. Maybe fewer teams, but more balanced. Less games to protect the health of the players, but more hard-fought.

“It’s not science fiction, let’s talk about it. We quantify the damages, let’s see how to cover them, we make sacrifices. Let’s all save football together from a crisis that risks being irreversible.”

He was then asked if it was possible that the Serie A title may not be assigned whatsoever.

“It would not be correct for me to say something as it is not a FIFA decision. If asked, I will give my opinion but football, and the Scudetto, do not seem to me to be the most important things now.”

In conclusion he spoke on how this Serie A season has went and praised several clubs in the process, including Inter, who he supports.

“So far it has been very interesting. Congratulations to Juve, Lazio and Inter and very well done to Atalanta who have thrilled everyone in the Champions League.”

Gianluca Di Marzio: “Barcelona Are Losing €5 Million A Day, Maybe Now They Can’t Afford Inter Striker Lautaro Martinez”

Italian journalist and transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio discussed Inter striker Lautaro Martinez’s possible departure to join Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window yesterday. His words were noted by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.

“Before the Coronavirus emergency, Lautaro to Barça was much more than an idea, the Blaugrana will was strong. Right now, however, the important thing is to understand how much teams will lose economically after this crisis.”

Di Marzio highlighted Lautaro’s expensive price tag and the losses being suffered by the Catalan side due to the Coronavirus emergency. Football in Spain has been postponed, like most of Europe.

“One can think that Barcelona can no longer spend 111 million on Lautaro, the Catalan side are already losing €5 million a day. Therefore, assuming negotiations at these figures could be counterproductive.”

Lautaro, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023, has been followed by the Catalan giants since 2016, when he was impressing with Argentine side River Plate. The player has shined under coach Antonio Conte this season, forming a formidable partnership with former Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku and establishing himself on the world scene.

Lautaro has made 31 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2437 minutes. In that time, he has scored 16 goals and provided four assists.

Premier League Considering Restarting Football On 1st June, With The Season Ending On 11th June

The Premier League are considering restarting football on the 1st June, with six weeks of games to end the season, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the British newspaper the Telegraph.

The report details how the English consider the 1st June as the best possible date for the restart, considering the current situation of the Coronavirus emergency in the country and across Europe. The Premier League have also considered the possibility of having all the matches played behind closed doors, in order to finish everything including the FA Cup by the 11th June.

The league would then restart on the 8th August, the report continues, allowing the players around a month to rest and undergo preseason preparations. One issue, though, is that football contracts expire on the 30th June, the end of the footballing year. This means that there would need to be an extension from FIFA to allow those on loan or with an expiring contract to continue playing for their clubs.
