Player Ratings Napoli 1 – 1 Inter: Unlucky Nerazzurri Go Out Of Coppa Italia Fighting

After almost three months it was time for Inter to play football again and Conte’s men started like a team that was hungry and wanted to leave an impact.

The first half was as good as anything seen this season and for long periods Napoli could not get a grip. The early slice of luck made the game tilt in Inter’s favor. Then Candreva missed a golden chance. Ospina corrected his earlier error and a fighting Inter go out of the Coppa Italia.

Samir Handanovic – 6: One heart-stopping moment in the entire game. Could not do anything on the goal as his entire backline was caught. Nothing to do in the second half.

Milan Skriniar – 6: As usual looks much more at home on the right and even went forward a lot more than we have ever seen him do. Fatigue got the better of him.

Stefan de Vrij – 6: Don’t understand why he was booked, but overall did his job well. Strong when he had to recover the ball, silky on it. Ran himself into the ground.

Alessandro Bastoni – 6.5: Huge error almost cost Inter a goal, but a nice block to make up for it. Moves the ball at a level way beyond his years. Suits Conteball perfectly.

Antonio Candreva – 5.5: Looked like the break hasn’t helped him at all. Touch seemed off, poor passing. Should have scored to double Inter’s lead but it lead to Napoli scoring.

Nicolo Barella – 6.5: Trying too hard. Helped Brozovic out a lot with his movement. Didn’t look calm in the first half especially. Much more involved in the second half.

Marcelo Brozovic – 6.5: Playing like he never stopped for 3 months. The only mistake would be shooting that volley wide. Movement, passing everything was precise.

Ashley Young – 6.5: Exactly the opposite of Candreva in the first half. Created some good space and used it well to create chances. Risked a sending off especially with Rocchi.

Christian Eriksen – 7.5: Eriksen hasn’t had a pleasant stay in Milan so far, the pandemic was tough for him. He looked hungry and ready tonight. Deserved another goal.

Romelu Lukaku – 6: Involved in almost every attacking move. Held up the ball very, very well and could have even scored with a bit of luck. Will get better with games.

Lautaro Martinez – 5: Missing for large parts of the game. Lautaro was struggling even before calcio stopped. This was one of his worst games. Speculation has gotten to him.

Victor Moses – 5.5: Decent impact off the bench for Conte especially with a tiring Candreva. Caused some trouble for Napoli and should have done better with his chance.

Alexis Sanchez – 6.5: Alexis’ first touch of the ball created a great chance that flashed wide. He could have got a delightful assist if it was not for Ospina. Great impact.

Cristiano Biraghi – 6: Another positive for Conte. Biraghi played his best 20 minutes of the season in terms of attacking movement and influence. Created havoc on his flank.

Andrea Ranocchia – N/A: Brought on as De Vrij couldn’t walk anymore out of fatigue. Played a couple of long balls and evened out any aerial advantage Milik could have.

Stefano Sensi – N/A: Barely noticed Sensi in the 7 minutes he was on, but it’s a positive to finally see him fit. Sensi was simply irresistible at the start of the season.

Antonio Conte – 5.5: Conte has to sort out the finishing in clutch games and has to work on Lautaro for it. The only error tonight would be waiting too long to make subs.

Rocchi – 4.5: Both bookings didn’t make sense. He nulled the booking on Young by letting him go but as usual let Inter’s opponents off easily, Koulibaly for example.

Inter – 6 : This Inter is a pretty good team and dominated for huge periods, but its not ready to win yet. Conte has to look to finish the season on a moral high.

Fiorentina Planning To Offer Inter & Juventus Target Gaetano Castrovilli A New Contract

Fiorentina have no interest in selling Inter linked midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli and are considering offering him a new contract, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper la Repubblica.

The report details how the 23-year-old Italian midfielder, who is contracted to the Florence based club until 2024 after signing a new deal with the side before Christmas, has impressed this season playing for the Viola, being one of the club’s stars alongside Federico Chiesa.

Castrovilli has attracted the interest of both Inter and Juventus, with both clubs appreciating the Italian’s qualities and considering making a summer move for him.

Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso has no plans to lose Castrovilli in the summer, the report continues, and would be prepared to extend his current contract by an extra year, to 2025, as well as increasing his salary a little. The Florence based club want to send a clear signal to any interested clubs that he is not for sale.

PSG Director Leonardo On Inter Linked Cavani, Kurzawa & Meunier: “All Leaving This Summer”

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has confirmed that both Inter linked Edinson Cavani and Brazilian defender Thiago Silva will leave the club at the end of the season, after their contracts expire with the French side, in an interview with French media outlet Le Journal du Dimanche earlier today.

“Yes, we’re coming to the end with them. The idea is to have them until the end of August. It was a very difficult decision to make.

“These are the players who have marked the club’s history. We always wonder if we should continue a bit together or stop. Stories are good stories. But yes, we are coming to the end.”

He commented on how PSG still want the duo at their disposal for the remaining games in the Champions League, and how the decision to let them leave on a free transfer was necessary for different reasons.

“It was necessary to make a logical decision, even on an economic level or in relation to the generation that is coming. Maybe we’re wrong, I don’t know, there’s never a perfect moment.

“Now the Champions League is still in sight and the idea is to continue competing with them until the end of August. But how it can be done is still not clear.”

Finally, Leonardo confirmed that multiple other players will be leaving the club in the summer after their contracts expire, including the Inter linked full backs Layvin Kurzawa and Thomas Meunier.

“The idea is also to end here with them, but we have to discuss the next two months. We will try to keep the whole squad for the Champions League.”

Inter have been linked with multiple PSG players in the summer, with Cavani being one of the most exciting. However, the Nerazzurri are unlikely to pull the trigger on the Uruguayan veteran, considering his high wages and desire to play with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. The Milanese club are still considering signing either Kurzawa or Meunier in the summer in order to strengthen their wing back department.

Italian Journalist Barzaghi: “Christian Eriksen’s Performance & Goal Best News Of The Night For Inter”

Italian journalist Matteo Barzaghi discussed Inter’s 1-1 draw against Napoli and elimination from the Coppa Italia in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia, after the end of the game.

“The best news of the evening for Inter is the performance, in addition to the goal, of Christian Eriksen. The very reassuring fact was that he ran, like when after the goal he matched Insigne in the middle of the pitch. I don’t know if he would have done that in late January or early February. He’s getting into Conte’s mentality.”

Barzaghi also highlighted how Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen now gives the Nerazzurri danger when in dead ball situations, clearly displayed with his goal against Napoli in last night’s draw.

“I think that’s the best news, even on a tactical level. The goal he scored is a sore point for the Nerazzurri because they haven’t scored a free kick in Serie A since the 2017-2018 season. Eriksen can be useful both for tying up the team and for free kicks.”

Inter coach Antonio Conte will be disappointed after being eliminated from the Coppa Italia last night, as the Lecce born coach was hoping to win the competition in order to achieve some silverware in his first season in charge.

Conte will now fully focus on the remaining games of the Serie A season, hoping to still stay relevant in the title race, although the Milanese club are currently nine points behind rivals and league leaders Juventus, although they do have a game in hand that could see that distance drop to six points, should Conte’s squad beat Sampdoria next weekend.

Italian Journalist Luca Marchetti: “If I Were Sampdoria I’d Be Worried Of Playing Inter Now”

Italian journalist Luca Marchetti commented on Inter’s 1-1 draw against Napoli and elimination from the Coppa Italia in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia after the game.

“If we want to find a positive note in the undeserved elimination of Inter it’s that the high number of matches has gone down. They will play in a week’s time against Sampdoria and then they will have the same amount of games as the others.”

Marchetti then touched on how the Nerazzurri have a slight physical advtange compared to other teams when restarting the league, due to facing Napoli tonight. Unlike either Juventus or Napoli, the Nerazzurri have a full week to recover, rather than playing in the mid-week slot.

“Objectively speaking, Inter have already tested their athletic condition against an important team like Napoli and they had a good match. It certainly served them well in terms of awareness of their means. Now the Nerazzurri know what to do when they return to the pitch, if I were Sampdoria, I’d be worried.”

Inter coach Antonio Conte was hoping to win the Coppa Italia, after disappointing in the Champions League and falling behind in the title race. The Nerazzurri are nine points behind league leaders Juventus, although they do have a game in hand thanks to the postponed game against Sampdoria that will be recovered next weekend. The Lecce born coach has never won the Coppa Italia as a manager and will have to wait until next season to try again.

Inter Coach Antonio Conte: “You Don’t Begin Winning Titles Overnight When You Haven’t Won For 9 Years”

Inter coach Antonio Conte discussed the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 draw against Napoli and their elimination from the Coppa Italia in a press conference earlier tonight, after the game. His words were noted by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.

First, he discussed how the team started the game with an advantage, with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen scoring after only two minutes.

“We could have been more deadly, we created a lot but scored just one goal. Then Ospina was the best player on the pitch for Napoli, with incredible saves. And he was also the provider for the assist for the goal. He had a fantastic performance.”

The former Juventus and Chelsea coach touched on how it felt to have five substitutions at his disposal.

“Well, it’s certainly a situation adopted to try to give the players more breathing space as we’re expecting something crazy at a footballing level, because thinking about playing so much between June and July is not normal.

“It will be new, the five substitutions can give players breathing space and allow us to take fewer risks in terms of injuries. But the important thing for us is that beyond substitutions, whoever comes in knows what to do.”

Conte wasn’t able to predict which team between Napoli and Juventus would win the cup next week.

“Honestly, at the moment it’s hard for me to think about it, there’s the bitterness and regret because we deserved this final. I hope it will be a beautiful final, congratulations to both.”

He spoke about the work he has been doing with Eriksen, who appeared different tonight compared to how he played when he arrived in January.

“We’ve been working on it, as well as the system that allows him to integrate at his best. We worked tactically and physically. He’s done well, I’m happy for him, and I’m sure he’ll continue to do so.”

Conte spoke about the Nerazzurri’s season so far and whether he considers it a successful first season in charge.

“It’s not for me to assess it. I think there has been an important growth from all points of view, most of all Lautaro and Bastoni.

“My job is to raise the level, improve the players and make them competitive to win. You don’t begin winning titles overnight especially when you haven’t won for nine years. I’m happy with these guys, the road is the right one and we will make Inter fans proud.”

Finally, Conte spoke about how it is different playing games behind closed doors, with no fans present.

“We have to be focused and do the best we can regardless. We’re sorry to play without a crowd, but there’s this situation and we have to adapt by playing the same way.”
