Mario Balotelli: “Choosing Inter Over Barcelona Was Right, I’m An AC Milan Fan But Love Inter Too”

In an Instagram live chat with Italian social media influencer Damiano Coccia, otherwise known as ‘Er Faina’, former Inter striker Mario Balotelli has reminisced about working under Jose Mourinho whilst at the Nerazzurri.

He started the live chat, which took place yesterday afternoon, by admitting he has no regrets over not moving to Barcelona as a youngster.

“Do I regret not going to Barcelona? No, I won almost everything with Inter, then we beat them in the Champions League semi finals the year we won it. We are talking about two top clubs but going to the Nerazzurri was the right choice,” he began.

Next he went on to speak about current Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho and revealed shared an anecdote about Mourinho from after the Champions League final.

“We got along, there were just a few discussions, with no lack of respect. It only happened once, I can’t remember why, but he dropped me for two games. Other than that, we got along well.

“I remember after winning the Champions League, he stepped on to the bus and I was already practically asleep at the back, but he was hugging everyone and crying, they were all crying.”

Balotelli, who is now on the books of Brescia, then went on to discuss his move from Manchester City to AC Milan and during the segment he expressed his love for Inter.

“Adriano Galliani wanted me at AC Milan. After Manchester City, I was going to Juve and was ok with that, but then Galliani got in the way and when I heard AC Milan were involved, I lost it.

“As you know, I am a fan of Milan, so I followed my heart. At the time, AC Milan were seventh or eighth in the table, so it would’ve been smarter for me to go to Juventus, but I have AC Milan in my heart.

“To be honest, I love Inter too. Juve would’ve been a practical choice and I did think about it, but then I chose with my heart.”

Balotelli spent three years with Inter between 2007 and 2010 during which time he made a total of 86 appearances across all competitions. He scored 28 goals and also provided 15 assists for his Nerazzurri teammates.

Alvaro Pereira: “Leaving Porto To Go To Inter Was The Biggest Mistake Of My Career”

Former Inter defender Alvaro Pereira has revealed that he regrets ever moving to Inter and went so far as to state it is the biggest mistake that he has made in his 17 year playing career.

The former Uruguayan national team full back, who is currently on the books of Paraguayan Primera Division club River Plate Asuncion, joined Inter in the Summer of 2012 from Portuguese giants FC Porto and would spend a total of three years on Inter’s books.

The now 34-year-old made a total of 47 appearances across all competitions for Inter. He scored a single goal and provided six assists for his teammates during that time.

“We had set such a high level at Porto and if we wanted to win or fight for the Champions League then we had to strengthen ourselves. My desire was to win,” he explained in an interview with Portuguese newspaper Record, which appeared in yesterday’s print edition.

He then spoke on why he decided to leave FC Porto after three trophy filled seasons to join Inter and shared his regrets over the transfer to the Nerazzurri club.

“I understood that Porto were wanting to win but they were always looking to sell players rather than buy them and because of this I said that I would prefer to leave. However that was the biggest mistake of my career.”

Ex-AC Milan Winger Suso: “I Was Close To Joining Inter, Spalletti Really Wanted Me”

Former AC Milan attacker Suso has revealed that he could have joined Inter whilst Luciano Spalletti was in charge of the club.

The 26-year-old left the Rossoneri for Sevilla on a loan with obligation to buy basis in the past January transfer window and has scored one goal and tallied one assist in eight appearances since for them.

In an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia yesterday evening, the Spaniard revealed that he had held talks with other clubs but was only ever actually close to joining Inter.

“I spoke to Fiorentina last summer and we had a meeting, but I just listened out of courtesy. There was never anything concrete with Roma, either. However, I was close to joining Inter, as Luciano Spalletti had spoken to me and really wanted me at Inter,” the former Liverpool player explained in the interview.

Suso then went on to share his appreciation for Spalletti’s style of play.

“Inter were a team that played very good football with an interesting system suited to my characteristics. However, it would’ve been sad to leave AC Milan for Inter, as I was so fond of this club.”

Suso spent a total of five years with Inter’s cross city rivals and represented them no less than 153 appearances across all competitions to date.

He scored 24 goals – including some against Inter in Milan derbies – and also provided a total of 36 assists for his Rossoneri teammates.

Inter Legend Toldo: “There Was A Big Fight Day Before Return Leg Of 2010 Champions League Semifinal Against Barcelona”

In an interview in the print edition of today’s newspaper Il Giornale, former Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo reminisced about Inter’s 1-0 Champions League second leg semifinal loss to Barcelona which took place 10 years ago yesterday.

Although Inter lost the match, they still progressed to the Champions League final with thanks to a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

“We were monumental. Everyone in the world knows how strong Barcelona are, especially at home. They have extraordinary characteristics and can put any team in difficulty but they did not show it against us,” he began the interview which appeared in today’s print edition.

“I still remember the great save that Julio Cesar made on Lionel Messi and despite Thiago Motta being sent off, we managed to hold on until the end of the game.”

He then went on to reveal that things turned sour in the camp the day before the second leg but things were sorted out in time before the game.

“The day before there was a big fight during lunch in our squad for reasons that I cannot tell you, those reasons are among the secrets from that year but everything was resolved in the best way and we took to the field more united than ever before.”

Toldo, who spent nine years on Inter’s books and retired after the Champions League final, then spoke on something he believes was crucial in the team being as successful as they were.

“The real strength of that group of players was that everything was done directly. We said things to each others faces without anyone being offended. There were also great players who made themselves available and put the interests of the team before their personal interests.”

Toldo then went on to speak about what was great about then manager Jose Mourinho, who was absolutely pivotal in Inter’s historic treble win.

“He is above all a psychologist, man management is fundamental for him, clarity and communication are strong points. He gets respect from the team. Several times he attacked the great players for various reasons without anyone being offended.

“He was the first to training and the last to leave. With him you could easily discuss any topic, he was always prepared. His talent in speaking multiple foreign languages stood out and he demonstrated it at his presentation at Pinetina.”

Toldo then spoke on Inter bottling the 2001/02 Serie A season right at the end: “It was the most bitter epilogue to a season that was distorted to the detriment of sporting meritocracy.”

He also spoke on former teammate Ronaldo: “Ronaldo? He is the best and most sympathetic Brazilian I have known, despite his physical adversities he always sported a contagious smile.”

The former Italian national team shot-stopper also spoke on today’s Inter.

“Compared to previous years, I think the level has been raised, even if it is not enough to compete with Juventus. Inter have a remarkable history and deserve many more Serie A title wins.”

Ex-Barcelona Striker Saviola: “Inter’s Lautaro Martinez Can Do Well At Barcelona But It’s Not Easy To Play With Lionel Messi”

Former Barcelona and Argentina national team forward Javier Saviola has shared his belief that Inter striker Lautaro Martinez could be good for Barcelona but has insisted that it will not be easy for him.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with making a move for the 22-year-old forward in recent weeks and months with many reports suggesting he is there number one transfer target.

Lautaro has a €111 million release clause in his current contract with Inter but reports have stated Barcelona would instead prefer to do a player(s) plus cash deal for the former Racing Club player, who has also been linked to Real Madrid and Manchester City.

“Honestly for me he is a player who can come in handy for Barcelona. We know what it means to be next to Suarez, Messi and other great players but I am not saying that it is easy to play with them,” Saviola remarked in an interview with Goal.com via social media platform Instagram.

“Dybala said it was difficult with Messi and I supported him because it requires a high level of concentration, to be at his pace. It seems easy but it is not.”

This season Lautaro has made 31 appearances across all competitions to date in which he has scored 16 goals and provided a total of four assists for his Nerazzurri teammates.
