Massimo Moratti: “Inter Want To Keep Barcelona Target Lautaro Martinez”

Former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has addressed the ongoing rumours linking Inter striker Lautaro Martinez with a move to Inter.

“It is Inter’s intention to retain Lautaro. He is a player with great potential, but everything will obviously depend on the player’s will and Lautaro is very comfortable at Inter,” he began an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Ser Catalunya yesterday afternoon.

“In the end, however, it also depends on the offer Barcelona make. Of course, being able to play alongside Leo Messi is always a motivation for any ambitious player.”

He was then asked who he would accept in a potential player plus cash deal for the highly rated 22-year-old, who has a contract with Inter through to the end of the 2022/23 season: “There is a certain player, Messi, he is not too bad.”

Moratti then spoke on his failed attempt to bring Messi to Inter whilst he was in charge of the Nerazzurri.

“He has always been closely linked to Barcelona, he is a dream signing for many, but signing him is an impossible dream. I was unable to do it when I was in charge at Inter and I still don’t know if I could do it today.”

He proceeded to discuss Barcelona and Chilean national team midfielder Arturo Vidal, who continues to be linked with a potential move to Inter due to Inter manager Antonio Conte’s great admiration for him.

“He has a great character and could be a good player for any team.”

Moratti purchased a controlling stake in Inter back in 1995 from Ernesto Pellegrini and was Inter’s majority shareholder up until 2013 when Indonesian tycoon Erick Thohir bought a controlling stake. Moratti continued to have a small stake in the club up until 2016, when Suning purchased his remaining shares and Thohir’s.

The Forgotten Faces At Inter: Gabriel Batistuta – Too Little, Way Too Late

In this series of articles we will be reminding you of players you forgot ever donned the black and blue of the Nerazzurri, as well as discussing and dissecting their time at Inter as well as the rest of their careers.

In the third part of this series the turn has come to Gabriel ‘Batigol’ Batistuta.

The Argentine great is a man known for spending years tearing apart Serie A with Fiorentina and Roma so when he rocked up at Inter after dominant spells with both those clubs, the expectations were mixed due to his high age.

Batistuta arrived in Europe in 1991, joining La Viola from Boca Juniors to replace Roberto Baggio who had moved to Juventus. It was at Fiorentina that ‘Batigol’ would spend the best years of his career and where he would go down in folklore as one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Over a nine year spell, Batistuta scored over 200 goals for Fiorentina and was part of the side who lifted the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa in 1996. His form at Fiorentina saw him finish third in the 1999 Ballon D’Or.

After seeing their neighbours Lazio triumph in winning the Scudetto in 2000, Roma decided that they needed a title of their own in terms of bragging rights in the capital. In the summer of 2000, Roma paid a whopping €36million to Fiorentina for the then 31 year-old Batistuta, prompting joy in the streets of Rome and despair in the streets of Florence.

The move turned out to be great for Batistuta and Roma who did in fact win the league title in 2000/01, with Batistuta scoring 20 times in the league and forming a deadly partnership with Francesco Totti and Vincenzo Montella.

However, this was Batistuta’s swansong. The big striker was starting to see the miles on the clock catch up to him and he found the net just six times in the following year as Roma failed to reclaim their title, finishing just a point behind winners Juventus.

By this time, Batistuta had turned 34 and Roma were keen to offload him in the hope they could recuperate some of the club record fee that they invested in him.

In came Inter with a loan offer with a view to buy so that Batistuta could partner Christian Vieri in attack. ‘Batigol’ joined Inter much to the delight of the Inter faithful who found the prospect of Vieri and Batistuta playing up front together as truly mouth watering.

However, the move had some cynics who claimed it was too late in his career to have signed Batistuta and ultimately, they were right.

Batistuta made 12 appearances for the Nerazzuri, netting just twice. His partnership with Vieri didn’t spark as much as fans had hoped, although Batistuta did prove a good foil for Vieri, assisting him on four occasions.

Ultimately though, Batistuta’s performances in an Inter shirt were those of a man who was past his brilliant best. He was lacking the explosive pace and power that had made him a Serie A icon at Fiorentina and Roma.

Batistuta returned to Rome in the summer and moved to Qatari outfit Al-Arabi where he would wind down his illustrious career earning a final pay day.

There can be no doubt that Batistuta is one of the greatest strikers ever to grace Italy. His loyalty as to Fiorentina was unwavering in the 90s as he even played in Serie B with the club after they were relegated in 1993. He won the hearts of the fans in Florence who have since erected a statue in honour of him.

Although expensive, his transfer to Rome ultimately guided Roma to the Scudetto in 2001, with Batistuta’s 20 goals playing a huge part in that.

By the time 2003 came around, Batistuta was way past his best form. Inter had simply signed the Argentine too late in his career. The twenty goal a season striker of yesteryear had too many miles on the clock and this was proven by his next move which saw him leave Serie A for a final payday in Qatar before hanging up his boots.

Had Inter been able to convince Batistuta to leave Fiorentina in the 1990s there is no doubt that we would be looking back at a player who would have lit up San Siro in Nerzzauri colours. However, we instead must accept that the Batistuta that rocked up at Inter was one who through no fault of his own was simply past his very best.

The 22-year-old Inter striker has been heavily linked with a potential switch to the La Liga powerhouses ahead of the upcoming transfer window and the report details how he will now have to manage the increased pressure that he will find himself under on the pitch due to all the rumours circulating in the media.

Italian Media Lists 2 Main Reasons Inter Coach Antonio Conte Has Worked The Team Hard

Inter manager Antonio Conte has been working the team very hard as he wants to be quick out of the blocks once the season gets back underway according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Tuttosport.

The season has been on hold for close to three months now due to the Coronavirus crisis but is set to return in the coming weeks.

The work Conte has put the players through has taken its toll on some of them, namely Matias Vecino, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni and Diego Godin and the report explains that there have been some grumbles amongst the players due to the unexpected heavy load of work.

Aside from wanting to be quick out the blocks, starting with overturning the first leg Coppa Italia semi final defeat to Napoli, Conte has also worked the team hard due to wanting everyone at a similar fitness level as rotation will be required given the amount of games left to play and the close proximity of them all.

Italian Journalist Biasin: “Tonali Signing For Inter Would Be Huge, Icardi-PSG Deal A Masterpiece”

In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Sportiva earlier on today, Italian football journalist Fabrizio Biasin has addressed a number of Inter related topics and started by discussing their pursuit of Brescia’s Sandro Tonali.

“If Inter sign Tonali, they will be making a huge signing. The feeling is that he is a player of superior calibre,” Biasin began.

“Tonali is compatible with anyone. He can still be moulded as he is so young and capable. In my opinion he could do well in Inter’s side with or without Brozovic, in a competitive team you need both.”

Biasin then went on to discuss Mauro Icardi’s recent permanent switch from Inter to Paris Saint-Germain which took place in the last few days.

“Icardi has left and Inter made a capital gain. It was a masterpiece of a deal because it satisfied everyone. The anti-Italy return clause? It is a very intelligent way for Inter to protect themselves but I think Icardi’s desire is to continue in Paris.”

He proceeded to discuss Lautaro Martinez, who continues to be heavily linked with a potential move to Barcelona in the upcoming transfer window.

“For Lautaro let’s see what happens. I think he has already decided he wants to play with Messi and that Barcelona convinced him with a lot of money, but they must find the right price. Basically, it is always wrong to keep a player who doesn’t want to stay.”

Next Biasin dismissed claims that have been made in the media that Inter will play their Primavera side against Napoli in the second leg of the Coppa Italia.

“Inter are to play their Primavera in Naples? It is an urban myth, the Primavera team is not even training. It seems like bulls**t to me.”

Biasin then went on to discuss Inter’s teen sensation Sebastiano Esposito and a potential move he could make in the coming months.

“There is talk of him joining Brescia on loan as part of the Tonali deal. Inter want to give him the opportunity to find space and play consistently.”

In conclusion, Biasin spoke on Radja Nainggolan and the probability of him being handed a second chance by Inter upon his return from his loan with Cagliari.

“Maybe he will get another chance, I don’t know. It sounds strange to me. I don’t see him as a starer. I think he would also prefer a solution where he would be used more. It seems difficult for him to be in Conte’s squad next year.”
