Inter Legend Sandro Mazzola: “I Wouldn’t Have Let Mauro Icardi Leave For PSG”

Inter legend Sandro Mazzola discussed the transfer of Argentine striker Mauro Icardi to Paris Saint-Germain and the forwards available to the Milanese club in an interview in yesterday’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Il Giorno.

First, he commented on whether it was a good idea to sell Icardi outright to PSG.

“There are players of a certain type, if you want to become a great team, you don’t sell them. Because they’re the ones who make you win games.”

The former Inter striker then touched on how the 27-year-old Argentine striker suffered a relationship breakdown with the club.

“Even with everything that’s happened, in the end what happens on the pitch is what matters. I would have let him come back and tried to reintegrate him into the squad.”

Mazzola spoke about what he would have done to try and reintegrate Icardi back into the squad.

“I’d have taken him by the ear and made him go to training half an hour before the others. I would have tried.”

He suggested that Icardi could have worked well playing alongside Nerazzurri forward Romelu Lukaku.

“For me, Icardi and Lukaku could play together, players like that. Let’s ask the big clubs if they wouldn’t want to be able to count on a partnership like that.”

Mazzola even believed that Icardi could have formed a strong attacking trident alongside Lautaro Martinez and Lukaku.

“Let’s start by doing some training with all three of them and then we’ll see where to put Lautaro. Think of the team that meets a trio like that, they won’t be very calm. I’d rather keep one of them on the bench, or at least I’ll have them rotating throughout the season. But they could also play together, why not?”

Finally, Mazzola commented on the price paid by PSG for Icardi – €50 million plus €8 million in add-ons, as well as a clause that would see the French club pay Inter an extra €15 million if they would sell Icardi to an Italian club in the next 12 months.

“Maybe a little more could have been expected, but when you decide to sell a player, you sell him.”

Agent Frank Trimboli: “I Hope More Players From Premier League Come To Serie A Like Lukaku & Eriksen At Inter”

Frank Trimboli, Base Soccer’s agent who handled Christian Eriksen’s transfer to Inter from Tottenham in the January transfer window, discussed the transfer market and how he hopes more players move from the Premier League to Serie A in an interview with Italian media outlet Sky Sports Italia earlier today.

“I hope the transfer of players from the Premier League to Italy will continue. With the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Eriksen having done well, there is this desire for players to go to other countries as well.”

He also discussed how he hopes Serie A returns to being one of the most important leagues in Europe.

“Now the will of the teams will count for a lot, because the players often consider the desire for new challenges but now the players values will change, and I don’t think the clubs intend to pay certain amounts. In recent years Serie A has also been improving on various aspects. I hope we can go back to the way we were before.”

The 28-year-old Eriksen joined the Nerazzurri from Spurs in the January transfer window in a deal worth around €20 million. Contracted to the club until 2024, the Dane has struggled to settle so far in Milan, only scoring once and assisting once in eight appearances for the side, where he looked a little lost and sluggish.

Inter coach Antonio Conte has a lot of respect for the Premier League and the players there, and so is prepared to trust in Eriksen and give him time to adapt. Other players acquired from England have already proved successful, like Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young.

Italian Media Highlights Lega Calcio’s Plan B & Plan C In Case Serie A Season Interrupted Again

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina has developed both a Plan B and C regarding the end of the season, according to a report from Italian news outlet La Repubblica earlier today.

The report details how the Plan B of the FIGC president is a playoff and playout system that no clubs are particularly keen for. The system would affect ten teams, four in the playoffs and six in the playouts, or even all 20 teams, depending on the time slots available.

The Plan C is Gravina’s now famous algorithm, the report continues, which would be apparently able to calculate a completed league table, which would have simulated the remaining games of the season based on many factors like average match points and goal difference, as well as various other statistics. There is time until June 8th to decide what plans to submit to the Italian government.

Some clubs are still clashing, the report highlights, as some are keen for the restart whilst others would prefer the season to either be further delayed or voided completed.
