Juan Mata is set to depart Manchester United after being put up for sale by manager Jose Mourinho, per Duncan Castles of the Daily Record.
According to Castles, the £37.1 million signing does not fit into Mourinho‘s plans and has been put up for sale by the club, with the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss beginning a complete squad overhaul after missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification last season.
The former Chelsea midfielder was let go by the Portuguese coach during their short-lived time together at Chelsea in 2014, and history is set to repeat itself following Mourinho‘s arrival at Old Trafford.
Despite winning the Player of the Year award in the year prior to Mourinho‘s move to the west London club, Mata was unable to persuade his manager that he could be part of his plans this time around.
Once again, the Spain international has fallen short of his new manager’s expectations and is now preparing to exit United following a three-year spell with the club.

A fan favourite at the Theatre of Dreams, Mata has scored a total of 22 league goals in 86 games for the club during his spell after signing for David Moyes‘ side midway through the 2013-14 campaign.

Uche Amako of the Daily Express reported that Mata is a transfer target for Premier League rivals Everton but could also make a return to his homeland after reported interest from Villarreal.

Mourinho will reportedly entertain offers of £20 million for the attacking midfielder in a bid to free up space in his first-team squad and provide additional transfer funds to be put towards the club’s pursuit of Juventus playmaker Paul Pogba.

Meanwhile, Mourinho‘s first battle with rival Manchester boss Pep Guardiola has ended in defeat after the City coach closed in on the signing of young Colombian attacker Marlos Moreno, per Ed Malyon of the Mirror.
United also wanted the 19-year-old winger, who currently plays for Colombian side Atletico Nacional, but City are expected to complete a £8.23 million signing in the coming days.
According to Max Miller of Metro, the player will be loaned to La Liga outfit Deportivo for next season after impressing during their lengthy Copa Libertadores campaign, in which the team are currently participating in the semi-finals.
