Ex-Inter Defender Marco Materazzi: “In The Champions League Final Jose Mourinho Told Us To Play Worse”

Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi discussed his career with Inter, complicated relationship with Rafael Benitez and the Treble winning campaign in an interview with former Inter goalkeeper Sebastien Frey on Instagram earlier today. His words were noted by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.

“I wouldn’t have given Benitez anything. I’d appreciate a guy who doesn’t shake my hand because I’m being a bother. It’s better that respect remains, that must always be there. A strong relationship is a beautiful thing, but it has to be felt naturally, not forced. In fact, I haven’t had it with everyone.”

The former Italy defender discussed the Champions League final in 2010 and coach Jose Mourinho’s half-time talk.

“He told us, ‘We’re playing too well, we have to play worse.’ José is a phenomenon, he wanted to keep the tension high.”

He spoke about his fondness for Fiorentina and whether he thought about joining the club.

“I was really tempted when I left Inter. I proposed it to Della Valle, even for free, Fiorentina would have been a treat and Florence is a place that I’ve always liked. But then I decided to end my career with Inter.”

Materazzi spoke about his former teammate Ronaldo and his move to AC Milan later in his career.

“I’ll tell you one thing, he would have wanted to come back to us, I know that for sure. He didn’t even want to leave in 2002. In the locker room I knelt down in front of him and asked him to stay but he replied, ‘No, it’s either me or Cuper.’ And that’s when I knew he was leaving.”

He touched on former Inter striker Diego Milito.

“A phenomenon, he was humble in front of everyone. But the Inter environment was never a problem. You knew you were joining a family there.”

Materazzi also spoke about former Inter striker Samuel Eto’o.

“He was a big signing, like Angelino Di Livio, another phenomenon. I had a good relationship with Samuel before he came to Inter. The first time I met him was at a friendly match in Murcia, Real Madrid-Perugia. Anelka, McManaman, Seedorf, Casillas, Morientes, Salgado were there. I scored with a header from a corner kick, then 20 minutes from the end he entered, he was 17 years old and humiliated Mauro Milanese. In the end, they won on penalties. He contributed a lot to Inter Samuel.”

The former Inter and Perugia defender spoke about his derby goal against AC Milan.

“The crowning glory of a dream as an Inter player, I scored one but it was a good one.”

The 2006 World Cup winner revealed that he could have joined the Rossoneri in his career.

“Yes, but I stayed because Giacinto Facchetti asked me to.”

Finally, he spoke about his regrets regarding the career of former Inter striker Adriano.

“An incredible potential was wasted. One of the strongest players I played with, he could do much more.”

Ex AC Milan, Roma & Inter Striker Antonio Cassano: “The Goal In 1999 VS Inter Changed My Life”

Former Inter and Roma striker Antonio Cassano discussed the most important goal of his career and his best Italian starting 11 in an interview with Italian radio station Radio Deejay earlier today.

“The most beautiful goal I scored was on December 18th, 1999 for Bari against Inter, I can’t forget it. It changed my life in everything, even my wallet. I’ve become handsome too. Had I had a decent head, I would have played on the moon!”

The 37-year-old Italian then highlighted his best Italian starting 11 squad.

“Buffon in goal, and for me he’ll play the 2022 World Cup. In defense, Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Nesta and Maldini. Pirlo and Gattuso in the middle. On the wings Camoranesi and Del Piero, behind Totti and me, playing as a second striker. Did you think I’d forgotten myself?”

Cassano was one of the most exciting Italian strikers at the turn of the millennium, after making a name for himself with Bari. He spent five years in the Italian capital with Roma, where he 52 goals and provided seven assists in 161 appearances for the Giallorossi.

He then moved to Real Madrid, where his attitude problems quickly became obstructive to his career. After only a single season in Spain he returned to Italy, where he bounced around clubs, including AC Milan, Inter, Parma and Sampdoria.

In his one season with the Nerazzurri, Cassano made 39 appearances across all competitions for the Nerazzurri in the 2012/13 season. In that time, he scored nine goals and provided 15 assists.

The Lega Calcio & Club Presidents To Meet Tuesday To Discuss Finishing The Serie A Season

Lega Serie A and the club presidents will meet next week on Tuesday to discuss the restart of the league and what the calendar could look like, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The report details how some presidents, who were previously very keen to close out the season now rather than play out the remaining games, have expressed an openness to a dialogue. These presidents, apart from Torino’s Urbano Cairo and Brescia’s Massimo Cellino, could now reach an agreement with the League to restart the season.

The meeting on Tuesday next week will be important, the report continues, as the clubs look to emerge from it with a sense of clarity and understanding of the situation.

Some clubs are pushing for a quicker return to the pitch, like Lazio president Claudio Lotito, whilst others have indicated that they must wait for the approval of health authorities before restarting the league.

Inter Striker Romelu Lukaku Training Hard As He Targets Winning His First Trophy Since 2012

Inter striker Romelu Lukaku is warmed up and ready to go, hoping to win a trophy with Inter this season, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The report details how the 26-year-old Belgian forward, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2024, has never stopped training during the lockdown and has clear dreams for this season.

Lukaku has not won a trophy since 2012 and intends to win something with the Nerazzurri straight away, with either the league title or Europa League exciting goals.

Lukaku wants to play all the remaining games of the season, the report continues, which would bring his season total of appearances to 51, a career high. The player also wants to score at least four more goals, which would surpass the 27 goals he scored with Manchester United in the 2017/18 season, his best ever goal tally in a single season.

Inter’s Training Ground Less Equipped To Deal With Quarantine Measures When Compared To AC Milan’s

Inter’s rivals AC Milan are more equipped to deal with the return to training, due to the safety requirements that must be followed, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Libero.

The report details how the Rossoneri’s foreign players will return to Milan next season, who will undergo a short quarantine before returning to Milanello at the start of May. AC Milan’s training ground has 56 rooms, two dining rooms, two locker rooms and seven pitches, giving them adequate space to guarantee the safety of all the players.

The Nerazzurri, on the other hand, have a smaller training centre, the report highlights. Appiano Gentile only has four training pitches, two locker rooms and a restaurant, as well as 27 rooms, which won’t help to guarantee isolation. Therefore, Inter will have to create a support structure near the training ground to ensure the safety of the squad and staff.

Inter Legend Beppe Bergomi: “Lionel Messi To Inter Is A Dream, I’d Only Accept €111M In Cash From Barcelona For Lautaro Martinez”

Inter legend Beppe Bergomi discussed the Nerazzurri’s season so far, the squad and the ongoing Coronavirus emergency in an interview with Italian journalist Giammarco Menga on Instagram today, with the interview being reported in its entirety on Italian media outlet FcInterNews

“I think we need to finish the league, but in maximum safety and following all the instructions given by the doctors. From a sporting point of view, never before has a certain balance been created at the top, all the more reason to conclude.

“All Serie A clubs have the chance to resume in safety, while other clubs in the smaller leagues are in greater difficulty. We need to take these aspects and all the categories into account, in my opinion, with a view to recovery.”

The 56-year-old Italian spoke about the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where the Nerazzurri won their third World Cup.

“The moment that I remember with the greatest emotion is undoubtedly Zoff’s safe on Oscar’s header in the group stage match with Brazil. That would have been the 3-3 goal, instead Dino saved us with an extraordinary intervention.

“I consider him a true master of life, he was 40 years old, I was only 18, he was a pillar for me and for the whole group. The biggest regret, instead, was the semi-final in 1990 against Argentina, a wound that is still open, we were really a great squad, with a lot of names like Maldini, Baresi, Baggio, Donadoni, we were really a great team and we came from a beautiful path, since we had never lost a game.

“There was a surreal atmosphere in Naples, with the fans on the one hand supporting Italy and on the other not being able to deny their love for Maradona, our opponent. It was really a big regret to go out.”

The former Nerazzurri defender spoke about two former teammates, Lothar Matthaus and Ronaldo.

“Lothar had a winning mentality, to win we certainly needed the mentality of the champions, which he and Breme brought us. He wanted to put himself out there and drag us along, even in difficult times. His mentality was truly unique, he knew how to inspire a truly unique charisma.

“Ronaldo, on the other hand, was a champion. Despite his physical problems he still managed to win a World Cup and as top scorer. Despite the injuries, you could see his undisputed value. In 97-98 he did something unique, an extraordinary season. For quality he was really unique.”

He touched on the rumors that Inter could try to sign Barcelona star Lionel Messi and the reports that Nerazzurri striker Lautaro Martinez may be sold to the Catalan club.

“I think this is purely a dream. I don’t see Messi outside of Barcelona, where he tends to be fine, seeing him elsewhere seems impossible to me. It’s also an incredible economic effort. Inter is growing, but I want to be realistic, I don’t believe it much.

“As far as Lautaro Martinez is concerned, I think he’s the player who’s growing and Inter are taking the best years. I heard about Griezmann, but the age difference is too big in my opinion. I wouldn’t sell Lautaro for an exchange, but if Barça paid the €111 million, the ideal would be Timo Werner.

“He creates superiority, great in insertions, he would create a great tandem with Lukaku. If Lautaro were to remain, I still consider him a potential champion, I have no doubt about that, he’s clearly growing.”

Bergomi then spoke about breakout Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni.

“Bastoni is the typical modern defender. He’s left-footed, has personality and knows how to play football, I’ve known him since he played for Atalanta’s youth team and since the national team U17’s. Like all things, being young, he still has to grow on certain aspects, such as defending on the open field since Inter want to keep a high centre of gravity in their game.

“He has to improve and grow, so far, he has made some mistakes, it’s true, but at the end of the day who doesn’t make mistakes? If you make mistakes, you grow up. He’s this kind of player. He’s 20-years-old, he’s improving a lot and he has to keep it that way.”

He spoke about the comparisons between Nicolo Barella and Nicola Berti.

“I like the comparison, both have temperament and change of pace. Nicola had a speed and timing that Barella doesn’t yet have, but it’s a question of role in my opinion. Barella has better feet, but in terms of physical strength I say Berti, it’s still an interesting comparison.”

Bergomi discussed two players who joined Inter in the January transfer window, former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen and former Manchester United full back Ashley Young.

“Young has proven to be the best buy so far in January. He’s doing the best he can, and he’s doing it well. The only deficit is being right-footed and having to come back from the left, but he’s doing very well for the Nerazzurri.

“Eriksen, on the other hand, finds little room in a 3-5-2 in my opinion. Under this aspect Conte had some difficulties, in order to enhance him we could change the formation to a 3-4-1-2, personally I would keep a 3-man defense anyway.

“I would try to adapt myself to Eriksen, in order to enhance him. I can see him well behind the strikers, he has also sacrificed himself as a mezzala, but that’s not his role, it has been seen, he is not a player who likes to go fight for the ball.

“In England, tactically he was freer, he didn’t have all the tasks required here. He has to adapt to our football, and at the same time Conte has to find the right solution to make him return to his best. Antonio is one of the best coaches, I’m sure he will figure it out.”

Finally, Bergomi spoke about two players who have been linked with Inter, Sandro Tonali and Manuel Locatelli.

“Tonali knows how to cover more roles, he can play as a trequartista like Nainggolan, even if for me the ideal role for him is a mezzala. Locatelli, on the other hand, I know him well. The time at Sassuolo has helped him, starting from his experience at AC Milan which has helped him a lot, he’s a very interesting player.”

Italian Report Claims Inter’s Defense Alone Valued In Excess Of €150M

Inter’s confirmed defense for next season is worth at least €150 million, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how coach Antonio Conte has already informed the club that he doesn’t want to lose any of the four confirmed players, who are all set to play leading roles next season.

These four players are Slovenian shot stopper Samir Handanovic, Italian youngster Alessandro Bastoni, Slovakian defender Milan Skriniar and former Lazio centre back Stefan de Vrij.

Uruguayan veteran Diego Godin has not been confirmed, the report highlights, and the Nerazzurri are hoping to sell the player in the summer. The club are hoping to sell him abroad, which would end up saving them around €20 million, due to his high wages of €5 million net per season.

The Nerazzurri are looking to sign either Hellas Verona starlet Marash Kumbulla or Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen to replace him.
