European Leagues Could Adopt South American Style System For Coming Seasons

Some European clubs are evaluating the idea of adopting a South American ‘opening’ and ‘closing’ stage style league system according to a report in today’s print edition of La Repubblica.

Such a system could be used from next season until the Summer of 2023 to allow for a bigger Champions League and would also safeguard the national teams. There would be less games played but La Repubblica state that it could make things more interesting.

The report goes on to explain that the ‘opening’ stage of the season could be played up until April and then the finals of the Champions League and Europa League would be played before a break is taken for the European Championship’s and Olympics.

The ‘closing’ stage could then take place between October 2021 and March 2022. The next ‘opening’ stage would start and be finished in time for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the ‘closing’ stage would be concluded by the Summer of 2023 when things would presumably return to normal.

Romelu Lukaku’s Agent Federico Pastorello: “He Always Hoped To Go To Inter Despite Juventus’ Interest”

Federico Pastorello, the agent of Inter striker Romelu Lukaku, has revealed that his client always wanted to join Inter despite the fact there was interest from Juventus too.

Lukaku joined the Nerazzurri on a five year contract this past Summer from Manchester United in what was a club record €65 million transfer deal for the club.

The Belgian national team forward has been in fine form since his arrival in Milan with him having netted 23 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions to date this season.

“It is true [that Inter and Juventus were vying for his signature]. Romelu, however, had always hoped to go to Inter because he had always been impressed by their fans,” Pastorello remarked in an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Turin newspaper Tuttosport.

Pastorello, who also represents the likes of Inter’s Antonio Candreva and Lazio’s Francesco Acerbi, then went on to give his views on how the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic will have an impact on the upcoming Summer transfer window.

It has been widely reported that clubs have lost a significant sum and could lose yet more money the longer the season is on hold and Pastorello believes that there will be a drop in transfer fees paid.

“It will certainly be a transfer market that has never been seen before. We are facing a global crisis and there will be an economic impact on the world of football.

“I expect prices to drop and more creativity, plus lots of swap deals between big clubs.”

Lega Serie A & Italian Players Association Still Yet To Find Agreement Over Player Salaries Being Suspended

Lega Serie A and the Italian players association (AIC) are yet to come to an agreement over the issue of player salaries being suspended according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

The two parties met for talks last night but were unable to find an agreement in the meeting. Lega Serie A would like to see players wages suspended for the entire period of inactivity, however long that may be.

The Italian players association on the other hand only want to suspend players wages for a period of one month. The two parties will continue to negotiate over the period of salary suspensions and once/if they reach an agreement, they will not be able to determine how big the cuts are as it will be entirely down to each club to decide.

Juventus have already struck an agreement with their players which means they will not be paid for the months of March, April, May and June and it is understood that this action will save the reigning Italian champions close to €100 million.

Inter Will Only Accept One Player Plus Cash Deal From Barcelona For Lautaro Martinez

Inter will only accept a player plus cash deal from Barcelona for Barcelona if it contains one player and a significant cash sum according to a report in today’s print edition of Tuttosport.

Inter Defender Ranocchia Played Key Role In Inter Players Opening Up To Possibility Of Giving Up Wages

Andrea Ranocchia played a significant role in Inter players opening up to the possibility of giving up their wages according to a report in today’s print edition of Tuttosport.

The former Inter captain, who is the club’s representative in the Italian players association, is still seen as a leader in the dressing room and had a big role to play in things before club captain Samir Handanovic phoned club chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta to confirm that the players are open to taking cuts to help out.

Should Inter players go down the same route as Juventus players by waiving the wages for the months of March, April, May and June, they will save the club €17 million but this sum is only an estimate and does not take into consideration any individual negotiations that may take place between the club and players over the issue.

The report from the Turin newspaper goes on to state that the Italian players association would only like to suspend salaries for a month but clubs wish to have salaries suspended until the end of June.
