President Of Italian Sports Medicine Federation Maurizio Casasco: “Unlikely Football Training Resumes In April”

Maurizio Casasco, the president of the Italian Sports Medicine federation, has discussed the Coronavirus emergency and its effect on Italian football in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

First, he discussed when the players can return to training.

“You have to come to this answer step by step, because the country and the world are struggling with a dramatic health emergency.”

He revealed that the April 3rd date set for a return to training was only the earliest possible restart and is unlikely now.

“We had recommended not earlier than April 3rd as the deadline for starting. I think that the epidemiological trend, the terrible statistics and the ever-changing scientific evidence will suggest to us the possible decision to take. Only then will we officially disseminate, on the basis of the latest scientific information, a protocol indicating the conditions for a return to sporting activity.”

Casasco discussed the criteria they will use to come to a decision regarding a return to training.

“Italy is shaken by a crisis. Health is the first priority. But there will come a time when the country will have to get back on track. The theme of the restart cannot put professional sport, which is an important asset, in front of other essential activities that are priorities at the moment.

“And I am not only talking about the food supply chains, activities related to health care needs and emergency logistics. I would say that the formula could be this, geometric alignment to the decisions that the government and the health and human services will formulate within our country’s system.

“Formula One with colossal interests has stopped, pieces of the economy have stopped. It will have to be restarted taking everything into account, there will be a balance to be achieved, otherwise from the health emergency we will move on to the social emergency of which we already hear the warnings. We must all start again together, Italy must do so. Sport cannot and must not run alone.”

Finally, Casasco discussed how some elderly patients who have passed away from the Coronavirus have been shown to have scars affecting the heart, and whether that could happen to professionals who have been infected like Juventus forward Paulo Dybala. We are not talking about athletes, but mainly elderly people with underlying illnesses.”

“However, every clinical and functional aspect of all organs will be studied in depth, for athletes the various clinical histories will be carefully examined. Great attention will have to be paid to the positive cases, after the tests, in the gradual recovery.

“The professional athletes of the different sports have very high levels of intensity. We must be sure of the integrity of all organs and systems that may have been affected. Not only the heart.

“First of all, the lungs, then the functional capacity of it, then the heart. Competitive sport at a high level undoubtedly entails greater risks in itself and appropriate assessments will be made which, in general, will not be necessary for the population.”

Serie A, like most other leagues around Europe, has been postponed until further notice due to the Coronavirus emergency. Multiple people in the footballing world have contracted the virus, such as Dybala and Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

Inter In Strong Position To Sign Hellas Verona Defender Kumbulla

Inter have already laid the foundations for the purchase of Hellas Verona starlet Marash Kumbulla, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

The report details how the Nerazzurri are incredibly keen to sign the 19-year-old Algerian defender, who has exploded onto the scene with the Gialloblu this season. Inter have already laid the groundwork to sign the player, after meeting with the club in January. The Nerazzurri would offer both Federico Di Marco and Eddie Salcedo to the club, as well as money, in exchange for Kumbulla. Both Inter players are already on loan with the side.

Kumbulla’s valuation is around €25 million, the report continues, and he may be signed on a similar deal to the one that brought Stefano Sensi to Inter. That deal was a loan with a buy option attached, which has proved a successful way to judge Sensi and his value.

Inter Interested In Replacing Diego Godin With Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen

Inter are interested in signing Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen as a replacement for Uruguayan veteran Diego Godin, who seems destined to leave the club this summer, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

The report details how the Nerazzurri aren’t fully convinced by the 34-year-old former Atletico Madrid defender, who is contracted to the Milanese club until 2022. The Belgian defender’s contract expires with the North London club in the summer and could be signed on a free transfer. Godin could make the opposite journey and head to England to play under coach Jose Mourinho, who appreciates the Uruguayan’s qualities and has wanted to sign him since his time in charge of Manchester United.

Italian Report Highlights How Much Inter Could Save If They Reached A Salary Cut Agreement With Players

A report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has given examples of how much Inter could save if they reached an agreement with their players similar to Juventus to temporarily cut salaries.

The report details how the Turin based club have reached an agreement with their players to suspend salaries from March to June, which would save the Old Lady around €90 million. If Inter reached an agreement with their squad, they would also save a significant figure. For example, 26-year-old Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku would lose around €2.5 million, considering he earns around €600 thousand a month.

Former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, who joined the Nerazzurri in January, would also lose the same amount, the report continues. €5 million in savings in just two players shows how much can be saved by the Milanese club should such an agreement arrive. Many clubs are hoping to suspend or reduce the salaries for this period.

Inter Prepared To Offer Bayern Munich A Small Discount On Ivan Perisic

Inter may give Bayern Munich a small discount on Croatian forward Ivan Perisic in order to convince the German side to sign the player in the summer, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The report details how the Bavarian club aren’t fully convinced that Perisic is worth the €20 million price tag and are unsure whether they want to enact the buy option on the Inter owned forward. The Nerazzurri would be willing to give Bayern a small discount in order to stop the 2018 World Cup finalist from returning to Milan.

Perisic’s wages are around €4.6 million net per season, the report continues, a high fee that Inter would prefer to avoid. The 31-year-old has made 22 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1200 minutes. In that time, he has scored five goals and provided eight assists, although he has suffered from injury this season.

Lazio To Provide Strong Competition For Inter In Race To Sign Olivier Giroud

Lazio are ready to fight Inter for the signature of French striker Olivier Giroud in the summer, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The report details how the 33-year-old French forward, who is currently contracted to Chelsea until the end of the season, made Inter his priority in the January transfer window, despite interest from many other clubs including the Biancocelesti. A move never materialised as the Milanese club focused their efforts on signing Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, but when Giroud’s contract expires Inter will try again.

Lazio, however, are set to provide strong competition for the 2018 World Cup winner, the report continues. The Roman club are ready to offer the Frenchman a three-year contract worth €3.5 million a season in order to convince him to head to the eternal city.

Giroud has made 13 appearances across all competitions so far this season, scoring three goals in that time.

Lega Serie A President Paolo Dal Pino: “Serie A Will Return When Health Conditions Allow It”

Lega Serie A president Paolo Dal Pino discussed the coronavirus emergency and its effect on Italian football in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Corriere della Sera.

First, he discussed when Serie A will return and if they are confident that they can finish this season.

“Serie A will return, without taking risks, only when health conditions and government decisions allow it.”

Dal Pino then spoke about how the Juventus players agreed to take a pay cut to help the club move through the current financial climate, which has been heavily affected by the Coronavirus emergency.

“A painful road, but virtuous and obligatory. A sense of responsibility on everyone’s part is essential. In general, we see an inevitable revision of the current model and periods of crisis often open up unique opportunities for innovation and relaunch.”

Serie A, like most other leagues around Europe, has been suspended until further notice due to the spread of the Coronavirus, which has unfortunately killed over 9000 thousand people in Italy alone. Some Serie A players have contracted the virus, including Juventus star Paulo Dybala and Sampdoria forward Manolo Gabbiadini, although both players fully recovered.

UEFA have postponed this summer’s European Championship to next year due to the virus.

Ex-Inter Fullback Grigoris Georgatos On Ronaldo & Christian Vieri: “We Were Like A Family”

Former Inter left back Grigoris Georgatos discussed his time with the Nerazzurri, what he is up to now and how the Coronavirus situation is unfolding in Greece in an interview with Italian media outlet PassioneInter.com today.

First, he discussed the situation in Greece.

“I think the situation is the same for everyone now. Like you in Italy, we are going through a very bad time, trying to stick to what the government’s provisions are. We are all locked in our houses trying to bring patience trying to stay together to defeat this evil.”

The 47-year-old then spoke about what he has been up to over the last few years and whether he is still working in football now.

“Until a few years ago I was sporting director at Olympiakos, doing a lot of liaison between the club and the team, because the roles here are not as clear-cut as in Italy. I was also in charge of the youth sector, helping young people who were pushed into the first team.

“Now I’m out of football, I’m dedicating a little more time to my family, but I’m always following the games and finding out what happens. Who knows, maybe one day I might not be able to get back into the football that matters.”

Georgatos touched on his reaction when he found out that the Nerazzurri had purchased him in 1999.

“A great emotion, it was like going to play in a lineup of the best in the world! All the great players, the biggest names around at the time were playing on that team. As well as exciting, a great professional arrival that I tried to make the most of.”

The 47-year-old revealed what happened after his first season that saw him return to Greece.

“Well, yes, I missed my affections, my family, my friends. I was very isolated, I sought contact with Greece often and willingly. I even tried to fight it… at least in practice and in the game. It was as if Greece wasn’t there and I didn’t miss anything.”

He discussed the relationship between the players at the time and his friendship with Christian Vieri.

“We were a family, very close, although many players of great personality and different characters. We often got along with each other. The relationship with Vieri was a beautiful friendship that was born on the field and developed off. I also remember the birthday parties, we all went out to eat with the coach. All of Ronaldo’s, at the Brazilian restaurant, that evening that Taribo West started singing.”

Georgatos spoke about how he convinced stars like Roberto Baggio to let him take free kicks sometimes.

“With my left foot! I was pretty good at shooting them and they saw it in practice, so it didn’t take me long to convince them. They took most of the free kicks anyway, but sometimes left them to me.”

The former left back touched on what happened in Inter’s 1999/2000 season.

“Ronaldo got injured, that’s what happened. A fact that shocked everybody, that really knocked us down. It affected our performance a lot.”

He highlighted the difficulty of playing against one of the world’s best players, Ronaldo.

“In Appiano we were roommates, we talked a lot together. He was a phenomenon, a force of nature, everything you tried to do, he did something else to be able to get past you.”

Georgatos revealed that he didn’t know about Ronaldo’s transfer away from the club in 2002 until it happened.

“No, I didn’t know that until I saw it. I do remember one funny thing about him, though. In 1999 we went to play a friendly game in Zurich against Grasshoppers, that we won 3-5. I scored one of the goals myself, beautiful, after having beaten 3 opponents.

“From the stadium loudspeaker you can hear: ‘Inter’s goal, Ronaldooo scored’, which blew up the fans present. There were several bald guys on the team, me, Ronaldo, Di Biagio… When I got on the bus, Ronaldo said: ‘Oh, your goal was so good that the speaker thought I scored it!’”

He discussed his relationship with former Inter coach Hector Cuper.

“A professional relationship, normal, though not as friendly as I have been with other coaches.”

The 47-year-old Greek discussed Olympiacos left back Konstantinos Tsimikas.

“He’s a player I know well, because I discovered him. I wanted him very much in the first team, convincing the coach of the time, Marco Silva. He’s a player of perspective, you’ll hear about him. He’s on loan and he’s come back very convinced of his means.

“He can push a lot, but he can also defend. Now he’s complete and could also play abroad in a great team. Inter have the tradition of Greek players and he’s also a full-back.”

Finally, Georgatos highlighted that he still follows European football and Inter.

“I follow European football a lot, in particular Serie A. I like to see Inter’s games, the derby. In my opinion in the next few years they will be back in the limelight and will have a leading role in winning trophies, with Conte.”
