FIGC President Gabriele Gravina: “Our Priority Is To Finish The Season But We Must Respect The Rules”

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina discussed the Coronavirus emergency and its effect on Italian football in an interview with Italian news outlet Adnkronos earlier today.

First, Gravina discussed the next steps for the FIGC and Italian football.

“We are working on several fronts, our priority is to complete the 2019-20 season, but we must be careful not to compromise the 20-21 season. We have to be very cautious in assuming a series of scenarios.”

He then highlighted how the federation have been in contact with both FIFA and UEFA.

“We are in close contact with UEFA and FIFA, as far as their respective competences are concerned, and we believe a lot in the support that the maximum European body can give at this moment to all the Federations.”

Gravina discussed how difficult the solution will be to reach and the short time frame available to the federation.

“When dealing with a project of this kind, we must never forget that we have a technical time frame of no less than 20-30 days, between questions, checks and controls. We must bear in mind that if we were to go beyond the month of July, there would still be another month that would be needed to fine-tune the organizational machine and above all the control over the teams.”

The FIGC president didn’t think that it was viable to play matches in regions less affected by the Coronavirus contagion, such as those in the south.

“We do not discard any idea, but frankly to think that there is a part of our country that is suffering and continues to be a victim of this great epidemic and on the other hand to think about starting a different path, I do not see it viable. We must think that there is scientific research committed to finding that vaccine or those pharmacological remedies that can help the whole of humanity. We have one available, currently and that already works, which is solidarity, if we do not put this antidote in place and continue to cultivate our selfishness, I believe that we have not understood anything.”

Gravina also suggested that next season was not likely to lower the number of teams in Serie A to 16 or 18.

“Today there are rules in our national licenses, there are federal regulations that establish the formats. We must be careful not to make the most serious mistake, in a certain historical moment like the one we are living in, that we abandon ourselves to desires and assumptions that cannot be lowered into reality. We have rules that must be respected in any case, they can be modified, but there are technical timescales required.”

He highlighted the importance of staying calm and making a good decision, rather than upsetting the regularity of the league in order to provide quick solutions.

“Not forgetting that if we set out on a path that does not fall within the boundary of compliance with regulatory principles, we run the risk of starting disputes and we run the risk, really, of compromising not only this season, but also the next and also the coming seasons. I call on everyone to take a real pragmatic approach. We cannot confuse the book of dreams with reality. I understand that we are in an emergency, an emergency that guides and conditions our choices. We depend on a virus, right now, but we also depend, at the end of this virus, on a principle, which is that of respecting the rules.”

Gravina touched on the discussions with the Italian Footballers’ Association regarding a players’ salary cut for the months that they are not working.

“There’s a lot of contact with the Players’ Association, there’s a lot of activism from different clubs. What is fundamental is to find a common line for all the components that takes into account the general needs that emerge at the moment, but above all takes into account the specific differences of the individual leagues that have peculiarities related to salaries.”

Finally, Gravina spoke about the requests that the Italian football federation has made to the government in order to help protect the institution of football in the country.

“From some conversations we understood that a whole series of amendments were ready that we asked to be able to include in the decree law, which should go into conversion very soon, but we understood that, at the moment, there is a priority being given, within the conversion into law, to the planned amendments concerning the emergency and health protection and I must say that we immediately put the brakes on this, demonstrating that football has a strong sensitivity towards the protection of health and emergency. There will come a time, which is that of a new decree law, when we will ask to be included on an equal footing with every other economic sector in our country, but I stress, without asking for additional resources.”

Inter Coach Antonio Conte Donated 12 Computers To Turin Hospital’s Children School

Inter coach Antonio Conte gifted 12 computers to the school in a Turin hospital yesterday, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Corriere di Torino.

The report details how the Lecce born coach donated the 12 to the Regina Margherita di Torino hospital’s school, which is intended for children’s usage. Tiziana Catenazzo, head teacher of the school, discussed the donation, saying: “An unexpected gift. We had spoken with him and his wife Elisabetta the day before, to talk about the difficulties in neuropsychiatry.”

Catenazzo also highlighted how Conte’s gift will allow the children to establish a relationship with their teachers from a distance, currently impossible given the situation gripping north Italy.

“Because of the coronavirus emergency, even those hospitalized in child neuropsychiatry were left without teachers, without mobile phones, without computers for distance learning. With the gift of the Conte we will be able to re-establish with them a minimum of relationship, even more precious in this period.”

Finally, Catenazzo touched on how Conte’s gesture will make a real difference to the students.

“It is a gesture of particular attention and usefulness that we appreciate very much. The absence of the school, the real one, in reality, causes enormous discomfort to the hospitalized students because education is an integral part of the therapeutic protocol.”

Conte has previously spent two spells of his life in Turin, the first as a Juventus player in the years 1991 to 2004, before returning as head coach from 2011 to 2014. The Lecce born coach considers the city his second home and maintains many friendships there.

Lega Serie A Will Propose Three Month Salary Suspension To AIC On Monday

Lega Serie A will propose their idea about suspending players’ salaries to the Italian Footballers’ Association in a meeting next Monday, according to a report from Italian broadcaster La7 earlier today.

The report details how the idea of the League is to suspend the players’ wages for the next three months, waiting to see if and when the league will restart before paying their players again. The clubs’ justification for this is that the Coronavirus emergency poses serious risk to their financial stability and reducing players’ wages is an easy way of solving many fears.

The AIC have made it clear that there is no rush to pay the wages for the months affected by the situation, the report continues. The union, led by Damiano Tommasi, have said that there is time until May to pay for the months prior that haven’t had any games played. Regardless, the clubs will still attempt to fully suspend the wages for the time being.

Genoa Forward Goran Pandev: “Inter Were The Team That Brought Me To Italy & I Felt Indebted”

Genoa forward Goran Pandev, who won the Treble with Inter in the historic 2009/10 season, discussed his time at the Nerazzurri and experiences under coach Jose Mourinho in an interview with Italian media outlet Calciomercato.com earlier today.

“I worked with Mourinho six months at Inter and we won it all. He’s a sincere person, very loyal, he talks to you a lot, he gets in tune with his players. He always tells you everything to your face, personally and in front of the team, and in that period with so many champions, this quality has made the difference.”

The 36-year-old Macedonian forward then discussed the court ruling that allowed him to play in December of 2009.

“I went crazy with joy at the moment of pronouncement. I ran away from football, Milan was flooded with snow. I was joined by my attorneys. We hugged each other and rejoiced as if we had won a final. How much tension accumulated inside, without them I would have collapsed. And thanks to lawyer Grassani, who defended me, we managed to get the better of them.”

Pandev also discussed how uncertain his future was after the ruling, before a dream move appeared.

“I remember that the next day I came home for the Christmas holidays without knowing my destiny. When Carlo called me, it was early January. He told me only this, ‘Mourinho wants you’. I felt like I’d gone back to that day long before, I didn’t believe it. Inter is the team that brought me to Italy and I felt indebted. I had other proposals, but all I wanted was Inter.”

The Genoa striker spoke about his first experiences at Inter after arriving in January of 2010.

“The team had returned from Dubai, where they were training. I arrived at Pinetina on 3 January. When Mourinho called me and explained a few things, I thought: I’m home. I felt I had to give my all. I want to tell you something. At that moment, my physical condition after six months of inactivity was about 80%.”

Pandev highlighted how Mourinho managed to push him back to his best so quickly.

“Despite all my efforts to train separately, only the best pace gives you the right condition. If I did what I did, good or bad, it was only because of the emotional tension that I had accumulated during the months in limbo and that Mourinho was able to turn into a nervous charge and a desire for revenge. The body always keeps some hidden energy for itself. Mourinho drew there, I can’t explain better how. If I’d been told we’d win the Treble, I wouldn’t have believed it, but instead we won the whole thing. It was a dream. Like I said before, you don’t know what life brings you.”

Pandev joined Inter in 2001 but failed to make a single appearance for the Nerazzurri’s first team. After returning in 2010, the Macedonian forward would go on to make 69 appearances for Inter across all competitions, for a total of 4336 minutes. In that time, he scored eight goals and provided 15 assists.

Chelsea Striker Olivier Giroud: “Inter Was The Most Interesting Project To Met, I Spoke To Antonio Conte”

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud discussed his failed January move to Inter in an interview with French broadcaster Tele Foot earlier today.

“I was watching myself leave Chelsea in January. I saw six complicated months ahead of me and that’s why I had the desire to change my air. So, I tried to leave in January. It was all done, but in the end, Chelsea wouldn’t let me go. The conditions weren’t there for my farewell and they couldn’t find a replacement. At the end of January, I still had the hope of leaving.”

The 33-year-old Frenchman then highlighted that other clubs were also interested in him in January.

“Everyone knows that Inter’s sporting project was the most interesting for me, then Lazio and Tottenham also looked for me. At one point it was a question of where I wanted to play.”

The 2018 World Cup winner touched on the advantages that Inter had in the race for his signature.

“I spoke to Conte on the phone, he knew me from when he was coach of Chelsea. This was an advantage for me. Inter play in the Champions League, it’s a great club, Lazio, for its part, tried everything and even came to London to try something but the deal was blocked.”

Finally, Giroud discussed how French side Lyon also attempted to sign him.

“I spoke to the president on the phone who expressed his interest in me, but I told him that my priority was going to Inter. Postponed departure? Who knows.”

Inter looked to sign Giroud in January because coach Antonio Conte wanted a reliable alternative to Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku. The 33-year-old Frenchman has made 13 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 684 minutes. In that time, he’s scored three goals.

Giroud struggled to convince coach Frank Lampard of his qualities and was largely out of the match squad for parts of this season, before having a renaissance period in the last four games before the league’s postponement.

Inter Defender Diego Godin: “We Were Exposed Until The Last Moment, They Made Us Play”

Inter defender Diego Godin discussed the Coronavirus emergency, its effect on Italy and the postponement of the league in an interview with International media outlet ESPN earlier today.

First, he discussed how the players were forced to continue playing for as long as possible.

“We were exposed until the last moment, they kept pulling the rope to see if we could continue playing, until the situation became untenable. And today we are experiencing a difficult moment.”

The former Atletico Madrid defender then touched on the Coronavirus’ devastating effect on the Italian health care system.

“The health care system has collapsed, there are no intensive care beds to take care of so many seriously ill people and others who may have another disease they cannot cure. There are not so many professional doctors, it’s a very difficult situation.”

The Uruguayan veteran also spoke about how the Nerazzurri were forced to play Juventus behind closed doors in Turin.

“The team continued to train normally, even playing behind closed doors. Just on March 8, Inter played their last match against Juventus, a team that within five days would confirm the first positive case for Coronavirus, Daniele Rugani. At that point we and the Juventus players were quarantined. There the league stopped, but first we continued to play behind closed doors. Surely there were other potentially infected players in that game, so they directly quarantined all of us.”

Godin discussed how the Italian government’s slow response made the situation much worse.

“At first it wasn’t given much importance, it was thought to be a Chinese problem and that it wouldn’t reach other countries. They took the measures little by little, rather slowly. They warned us about what was happening, but at government level no drastic measures were taken to prevent what could have happened.”

Finally, Godin highlighted the heroes of today, the doctors and nurses treating those infected with the contagion.

“The effort that doctors and people in the health service are doing is impressive, everything that can be paid to these people is not up to scratch. Today they are really heroes, you have to see the images of what they do, it’s really moving.”

Godin has returned to his native country after finishing the mandatory two-week isolation period. The 34-year-old defender, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, has made 25 appearances across all competitions so far this season under coach Antonio Conte.
