Lega Serie A Have Convened A Meeting For April 3rd To Discuss Future Of This Season

Lega Serie A have announced that a Shareholders’ Meeting will be held on Friday 3rd April to discuss what the next steps to take are, as well as decide what the future of this season will be, according to a report from Italian news outlet ANSA earlier today.

The report details how the meeting was deemed necessary due to the ongoing Coronavirus emergency, which has caused over 9000 deaths in Italy alone over the last few months. With the country in total lockdown, Serie A was postponed until further notice. The future of the season has been hanging in the balance, as it was unclear whether it would be safe enough or not to play the remaining games.

The League meeting will discuss what to do about this season, the report continues, as well as discuss the situation regarding players’ salaries, whilst also touching on the Coronavirus emergency in general. The salary topic has been much discussed since it was announced that the Italian clubs wanted either a reduction or temporary suspension of players’ salaries in order to guarantee their financial stability.

Italian Report Details FIFA’s Coronavirus Emergency Plans Ranging From The Transfer Window To Contract Dates

A report from Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia has examined the Covid-19 task force set up by FIFA to tackle the issues related to the contagion.

The report details how the Coronavirus emergency has been considered equal in impact to the Second World War, with it now being defined in legal matters as a cause of force majeure.

Any discussion, therefore, that involves the virus will be treated as a cause of force majeure, exempting football federations, clubs and players from responsibility.

First, the task force has come up with a solution regarding loan deals and contracts, which usually conclude at the end of June, the report continues. Considering that the leagues are likely to be played past that date, it’s suggested that there should be an agreement to postpone or reduce salary for the players in the period that they cannot train or play. For loan deals, the June 30th date can be overridden at the discretion of each country’s football federation, allowing a new date to be agreed upon.

Regarding the transfer market, the report adds, the ideas are either to change the dates of the market or extend it by one month. 12 weeks are set for the transfer window, but it could be pushed up to 16 weeks at the discretion of federations. In economic matters, FIFA will, among other things, make grant funds available to clubs and federations in case of extreme necessity.

FIFA haven’t given specific advice regarding the end of the seasons, the report highlights, instead leaving it up to their respective federations. For the Champions League and Europa League, the current idea is single match rounds in a neutral place, although the two competitions could be suspended completely if the emergency isn’t any better.

Inter Midfielder Christian Eriksen Has Returned To Denmark After Completing 14 Day Quarantine

Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen has returned to Denmark in order to be with his family, according to a report from Italian media outlet FcInterNews today.

The report details how the 28-year-old Danish midfielder, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2024, has returned to his native country after finishing the two-week isolation period he was forced to undergo following on from the announcement that Juventus defender Daniele Rugani had tested positive for the Coronavirus.

Eriksen will now undergo yet another quarantine in Denmark, the report continues. The player will have to stay at home and avoid travelling for 14 days like all other Danes who have returned from abroad, in order to combat the spread of the virus. The date of his return to Italy remains uncertain, although it will be clearer once a date has been picked for Serie A to be restarted. Eriksen initially spent the lockdown in a hotel in Milan before being moved to the club’s training ground in Appiano Gentile.

Cagliari Sporting Director Carli: “Transfer Market Ending In December Is Excessive But Something Needs To Be Done”

Cagliari sporting director Marcello Carli discussed the idea of an extended transfer window finishing at the end of December in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I think it’s still too early to give a definitive answer, I couldn’t go out of my way already. Let’s say it’s more of a ‘Why not? Let’s talk about it.’ I won’t hide the fact that there might be some organizational difficulties, it would be big news anyway, but the market remains fundamental for teams. So, it has to be done somehow.”

He highlighted what the priorities are at the moment as well as highlighting how the December closure on the extended window may be too long.

“Needless to say, the health of our people is all that matters today. A market of 4-5 months, with closure set for 31 December, would be excessive. However, it would be an interesting scenario.”

Finally, Carli touched on the suggestion that some players may be influenced by the open transfer window and could be less focused on their current club.

“Distraction, you mean for the players? It may be, we’re not used to negotiating for so long, but clubs need to be protected.”

Serie A, like most other leagues around Europe, has been postponed until further notice due to the Coronavirus emergency, which has seen Italy go into a total lockdown. The country has been hit the hardest in Europe, with thousands of deaths already. UEFA have agreed to postpone Euro 2020 until next summer in order to allow leagues to finish with regularity, although that depends on the current conditions of the emergency.

Fiorentina Captain German Pezzella: “Inter’s Romelu Lukaku & Stefan De Vrij Are Some Of The Best Players In Italy”

Fiorentina captain German Pezzella discussed the Coronavirus emergency, its effect on Europe and the strongest defenders in the world in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

“I’ve had a few symptoms, luckily nothing particularly serious. Then knowing that there was already one positive in the team, which was Vlahovic, I thought it could be the coronavirus.”

The 28-year-old Argentine defender revealed that he wasn’t initially worried that he had contracted the virus, before the scale of contagion was fully realized.

“Not at first. It seemed like it might be a pretty narrow thing. Then when I started to see that the range was widening and spreading like wildfire, I thought it could be anyone’s turn. We are not immune, we are normal people like everyone else, it is a virus that can affect anyone, that is why we all have to respect the directives of the institutions, even to defend those who are more fragile.”

The Fiorentina captain did not think that the Italian government had underestimated the virus.

“I don’t think it was underestimated, especially in Italy. I simply think that, being completely new, nobody really knew how to deal with it at first. When the situation became clearer, in its drama, the government took strong decisions and I hope that the results can start to be seen soon.”

He revealed which players he thought were his strongest opponents.

“There are a lot of strong players in Italy, lately more and more are coming. It’s difficult to name a single name but Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku are no joke.”

Pezzella highlighted how finishing the season was much less important than ensuring the safety of the general public.

“Honestly, I don’t know. It’s not our decision. There are the institutions, football or not, that will decide for the best. Right now, what matters is everyone’s health, then there will be time for everything else.”

Finally, Pezzella discussed the strongest defenders in the world currently.

“Here too the list would be long. Both in Italy and in Europe. The list would be very long, here in our league there are champions like Giorgio Chiellini or Stefan De Vrij, abroad Virgil Van Dijk from Liverpool comes to mind.”

Pezzella, who is contracted to the Florence based club until 2022, has made 24 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2047 minutes. In that time, he has scored two goals and provided one assist, as well as helping the side keep seven clean sheets.

Italian Report Highlights Two Ideas For Suspending Serie A Players’ Salaries

A report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has highlighted two ideas regarding players’ salaries during the ongoing Coronavirus emergency.

The report details how the clubs have asked for players’ wages to be suspended for the time that they are unable to train or work due to the contagion, as the clubs have highlighted the financial instability this places upon them.

The first idea that has been proposed is to totally suspend the salaries for this period, the report continues. The other idea is to ask players to take a proportional cut in their salary, with the maximum percentage of salary that would be lost being 30%, only for those who earn the most. For those with contracts worth less than €50 thousand a year, there will be a supplementary redundancy fund or extension of solidarity contracts.

Everything depends on a common line between the Italian government, the League and the FIGC, the report highlights. The AIC will only be able to advise players but not impose anything on its members, and so now the players’ thoughts must be heard.

Everton Coach Carlo Ancelotti: “Those Who Are Complaining About Not Being Able To Train Make Me Laugh”

Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti discussed the Coronavirus emergency and its effect on football in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

“We are all living a life to which we were not accustomed and which will change us deeply. I’m sure it will. We’re all going to have to get downsized, starting with football.”

The former AC Milan and Napoli coach then discussed how fighting the virus is a priority and teams shouldn’t worry about training.

“What matters now is to fight the virus effectively, I repeat. Then, of course, if we can continue the season, fine, otherwise ah well. It makes me laugh those who insist on talking about the preparation time, there are even those who talk about three weeks of training. It’s ridiculous. It’s a joke, the preparation is a false myth.”

Ancelotti then gave an anecdote from his time in charge of the Rossoneri during the Calciopoli scandal.

“I remember that in 2006, because of Calciopoli, AC Milan were initially out of the top four and then out of Europe. Suddenly, in order not to push Lazio back, part of our penalty was taken away and we were forced to do preliminaries for the Champions League. I had to phone the guys who were on holiday because four days later we had to face Red Star. Cafu returned from Brazil 24 hours earlier and played for 90 minutes. If you want, I can remind you how it ended in May. But I think you already know.”

He also revealed that the Milanese club were close to signing Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the summer of 2006, before the player agreed a move to rivals Inter.

“I also remember that in the summer of Calciopoli we were about to sign Ibrahimovic, all right. And when Galliani finally managed to convince Berlusconi, Zlatan had already agreed with Inter.”

Finally, Ancelotti discussed how some people have speculated that Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid spread the virus as much as the game between Atalanta and Valencia in Milan. Both games were played with a busy stadium full of fans.

“I spoke to Klopp the other day, he told me that playing the game in those conditions was a criminal act, I think he was right.”

The Coronavirus emergency has caused most leagues around Europe to be postponed until further notice, with UEFA agreeing to postpone Euro 2020 until next summer to allow the leagues to finish on time.

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi: “I Have A Solution, A Shorter Transfer Window Only Open In August”

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi discussed the idea of extending the upcoming summer transfer window to close at the end of the year in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I have no doubt, the standard duration, the summer duration, is already far too long. So, you can imagine my thoughts on four to five months of negotiations. It doesn’t exist. And the players could be influenced.”

The 72-year-old Italian entrepreneur further elaborated on the reasons why he is against an extended transfer window.

“Teams call, maybe they offer a lot of money and bigger contracts, they make promises, projects come up and agents move. And the players, in these conditions, what spirit would they take the field? I understand that we need a solution, personally, I could have one.”

Finally, Preziosi discussed his solution and highlighted how it could be the perfect idea for this situation.

“A shorter transfer window. Finish the official games maybe half way through or the end of July. So, the month of August alone, and I stress alone, would be for the market. Start playing again when September begins, 25-30 days would be more than enough.”

Genoa are one of the clubs likely to suffer from the extended transfer window, as it gives bigger teams more time to pick apart the successful parts of their squad. The Ligurian side sold Polish striker Krzysztof Piątek to AC Milan in January of 2019, but in this scenario, they would have likely lost the player much earlier in the season due to his strong performances straight from the beginning.

The idea of an extended transfer window is currently only an idea, with further discussions required.
