Espanyol Winger Wu Lei Has Tested Positive For Coronavirus, Now In Quarantine At Home

Espanyol winger Wu Lei has tested positive for the Coronavirus, according to a report from Italian news outlet ANSA today.

The report details how previously it was only known that some members of the Catalan club had tested positive for the contagion, but the names were not made public. However, Wu Lei’s positive test has been confirmed from reports in China.

The 28-year-old Chinese forward, who is contracted to Espanyol until 2020, has been put in quarantine in his home in Barcelona and the Chinese Football Federation is in continuous contact with Wu Lei and Espanyol in order to support him.

Wu Lei has made 38 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2101 minutes. In that time, he has scored seven goals and provided one assist, bringing a lot of new viewership to both Espanyol and La Liga as a whole as the player is one of the most successful Chinese players playing in Europe.

Ex-Inter Goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi: “Samir Handanovic’s Absence Was Heavy But It’s Unfair To Criticise Daniele Padelli”

Former Inter goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi discussed Inter, captain Samir Handanovic and a potential replacement in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

First, he discussed how much Inter missed Handanovic when the Slovenian shot stopper was injured earlier this year.

“It was certainly a heavy absence because, in addition to the undeniable technical profile, he has a strong presence on the pitch and in the locker room. A point of reference for everyone. You don’t become captain of a team like Inter at random. Samir is a person who doesn’t talk much, but when he does, he is listened to.”

The 44-year-old Italian then discussed his top three goalkeepers in Serie A at the moment.

“Handanovic and Szczesny are the two who have given the most this season. More for the quality and continuity of performance. They are two top players in everything that is required for the goalkeeper’s role. I don’t know how to choose. As a third I say Donnarumma.”

The former Brescia and Sampdoria shot stopper refused to criticise Italian goalkeeper Daniele Padelli, who filled in for the 35-year-old Slovenian during his injury.

“He was called on in high difficulty matches, with strong pressure. And the difficulties have increased for him too. We can’t even forget that he hadn’t played for a long time, that with a bit of continuity in the Europa League he had two positive matches. And then replacing Handanovic is not easy for anyone, also because the fans always expect the best.”

He then discussed Inter owned goalkeeper Ionut Andrei Radu, who is currently on loan with Parma.

“I was surprised at the choice of Genoa. Radu has always been one of the best on the pitch even when the results weren’t positive. He’s very responsive, he’s very difficult to overcome between the sticks. He’s a goalkeeper with great athletic skills.”

Finally, Castellazzi discussed whether Udinese number one Juan Musso is ready for Inter, considering how much the player has been tipped as the heir to Handanovic.

“It’s a big surprise. I started to appreciate him game after game. Compared to his first year he’s improved a lot, he’s more aware of his potential. He’s a goalkeeper that a lot of teams certainly like.”

Handanovic, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2021, has made 30 appearances across all competitions so far this season, keeping eight clean sheets in that time.

Spanish Report Suggests Barcelona Have Been Following Inter Striker Lautaro Martinez Since 2016

A report from today’s paper edition of the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has highlighted how Barcelona have been following Inter striker Lautaro Martinez since 2016, even noticing then that he was similar to Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.

The report details how the Catalan club have identified the 22-year-old Argentine striker as their main objective of the upcoming summer transfer window. The player will be the long-term replacement for the aging Luis Suarez. In 2016, Barcelona scouts noticed him at International Under-20 Football Tournament, or COTIF. They described him then as follows: “very intuitive and with great determination. Muscular and technical at the same time. Similar to Suarez.”

Barcelona, the report continues, continued to follow Lautaro even after he became a regular first team player for Racing. In March 2018 the belief that Lautaro could fit in well at the club was growing and the expected cost of €7-10 million didn’t seem like a heavy investment. However, Inter’s €25 million offer arrived, a fee considered exorbitant by the Catalan club. Last summer Barcelona also considered Lautaro, but Mauro Icardi’s departure to Paris Saint Germain made the 22-year-old indispensable.

Ex-Inter Goalkeeper Sebastien Frey: “Athletes Must Set An Example, Italians Have My Support During This Emergency”

Former Inter goalkeeper Sebastien Frey discussed the Coronavirus emergency and the lockdown in Italy in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

“Italy is my second home and I have an eye out for Italians, right now it’s like I’m there with them. They have my support.”

He discussed how he is experiencing the Coronavirus emergency in France.

“We’re locked in our house now, like what happened ten days ago in Italy. I also want to tell the French to use their common sense and their heads, and to stay indoors. Unfortunately, I see a lot of people who are underestimating the situation, if we don’t make a sacrifice, everything becomes more complicated. When I saw the images of the military vehicles in Bergamo my heart was crying.”

The former Parma and Fiorentina shot stopper discussed his experience contracting a skin virus last year.

“What happened to me was very strange. I had a fever of 40 for ten days, despite the antibiotics and medication. One morning I woke up and couldn’t move, I went to the emergency room and was in intensive care for eight days. It was hell. They told me it was an autoimmune disease and I came home thinking it was the beginning of the something but it wasn’t. If you were an athlete it’s not easy to understand that you have to start walking again but, thanks to my family, I came out of it. Also, for this reason you have to respect the rules, for the good of all.”

The 40-year-old Frenchman discussed what athletes can do to help in this situation.

“Athletes must set an example. Lots of people are sending messages and creating initiatives to keep people close.”

He spoke about whether he thinks the league can realistically restart in May.

“I don’t know if the league will restart this year, also because we don’t know when we’ll start up again. I too had to inaugurate the summer camps around Italy and France with the goalkeeper academy that I created but I’ve chosen to postpone it until a date yet to be set.”

Finally, Frey highlighted the important work of the doctors and nurses who are fighting the Coronavirus.

“The absolute heroes are the doctors and nurses who put their own health at risk for that of others. They are the champions of today. Every night in France we give a round of applause at 8pm, mine is also for Italy and the whole world.”

Frey spent three years with Inter between 1998 to 2001, although he spent a season on loan at Verona in that time. For Inter, the Frenchman made 47 appearances across all competitions, keeping 14 clean sheets and conceding 62 goals.

The Coronavirus emergency has caused Euro 2020 to be postponed by UEFA, to give more time to domestic leagues so they can finish with regularity.

Sampdoria Forward Manolo Gabbiadini: “I Could Have Transmitted Coronavirus To An Elderly Person If I Didn’t Take The Test, I Felt Fine”

Sampdoria forward Manolo Gabbiadini, who tested positive for the Coronavirus contagion, discussed the situation and his condition in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

First, the former Napoli and Southampton forward discussed when he first started feeling symptoms.

“I felt a little fever on the night of Tuesday the 10th, but I didn’t think about the virus. That night I slept badly, woke up often and in the morning my head was dizzy but I wasn’t hot. I only measured the fever out of concern and I was 37.5. I called Dr. Baldari from Samp, but again I didn’t think about the virus. Martina, my wife, however, suggested I ask for a swab, we have two small children at home. The doctor came to do it and we made an appointment for the next day. On Thursday I was fine, my fever had ended. At 3 p.m. the doctor called me to tell me that I was positive.”

The 28-year-old Italian then spoke about his reaction once he found out that he tested positive for the contagion.

“I asked him if he was joking, even though it was obvious he was serious. I didn’t expect it because the fever had ended right away. And from that moment on, I really started thinking about the coronavirus. If the doctor had told me to wait another day before deciding whether to do the swab, I wouldn’t have asked him again since I was feeling very well. And maybe, thinking I wasn’t positive, I would have gone to buy fruit at home and risk transmitting the virus to an elderly person in an absolutely unconscious way, a very bad thought, which torments me. I understood that there are so many positive cases who don’t even know it and then the battle can only be won in one way, respecting the directives and staying at home. I don’t have any political or health care responsibilities, but probably closing everything for a fortnight would have been right.”

He revealed that he underestimated the virus before he received the positive test.

“I think we all underestimated the problem a little bit. It was difficult to predict such a serious epidemic. It’s true that we’re always in buses, in hotels, in contact with people we don’t know. But you don’t think about these things until later and I can’t know how I got infected anyway.”

Gabbiadini agreed with the decision to postpone the league until the emergency is more under control.

“I don’t like to get into other people’s decisions because I think it wasn’t easy to stop the league. But in hindsight I think he was right, health is a priority.”

Finally, Gabbiadini discussed whether he is already thinking about the return in the league.

“For now, no, because it’s going to take some more time and the most important battle to win is against coronavirus. The champions are the doctors, the scientists, the nurses, all those who are fighting for us. Football will start again and it will be beautiful. The postponement of the European Championship opens an important window in the calendar, now let’s beat the virus and then come back and challenge each other on the pitch.”

The 28-year-old Italian forward, who is contracted to Sampdoria until 2023, has made 23 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1427 minutes. In that time, he has scored seven goals and provided two assists, despite the Ligurian side’s poor season so far.

Italian Report Suggests Ex-Inter Coach Luciano Spalletti Could Replace Stefano Pioli As AC Milan Coach In The Summer

A report from today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport has suggested that former Inter coach Luciano Spalletti could take the AC Milan job from Stefano Pioli in the summer.

The report details how the person at the top of the list to replace Pioli is former RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim coach Ralf Rangnick. Another option is former Valencia coach Marcelino, who is also available, although the Rossoneri could decide to simply place their trust in Pioli and give him another season to improve the team and their position in the league table.

However, Spalletti could also take over as head coach at AC Milan, the report continues. The 61-year-old Italian is still on Inter’s payroll after his dismissal at the end of last season. He didn’t find an agreement with Inter in October to terminate his contract, which is why he didn’t take the AC Milan job after Marco Giampaolo was dismissed. However, the Rossoneri may still look to hire him as he has shown that he can transform a team from a 5th-8th place squad to a top four squad.

Italian Lawyer Rinaldo Romanelli: “Juventus Players Like Gonzalo Higuain Shouldn’t Have Left Italy, They Had Close Contact With Coronavirus”

Italian lawyer, and author of the study ‘Coronavirus: rules and possible criminal consequences of non-compliance’, Rinaldo Romanelli discussed the departures from Italy of Juventus players Gonzalo Higuain, Sami Khedira and Miralem Pjanic in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

“Who authorized this?”

The lawyer discussed his confusion at the situation and the fact that the players went to their home countries.

“Quarantine has been in place since the Ministry of Health decree of February 21, 2020. In Article 1, the health authorities are obliged to apply it for fourteen days. There are no exemptions and the imposition has been repeated with the same formula in various subsequent regulatory measures.”

Romanelli refuted Juventus’ claims that it is an acceptable situation because the players were in voluntary isolation and not quarantine.

“Voluntary isolation is a definition that does not exist in any norm. There is ‘fiduciary home stay’, which is provided for people coming from risk areas, and ‘quarantine with active surveillance’, which applies to those who have ‘had close contact with confirmed cases of the contagious infectious disease Covid-19’. The definition of ‘close contact’ is given by the Ministry of Health and also includes a handshake or sharing a closed environment, it goes without saying that having used the same locker room or trained together is part of the case history of close contact. Rugani’s teammates, for example, should have been subject to quarantine with fourteen-day restrictions. Not up to fourteen days, reductions of this period or alternative protocols are only foreseen for exceptional cases.”

Finally, Romanelli discussed what the alternative protocols are and who they would apply to.

“I am thinking of the military on their return from abroad or health workers, who in an emergency situation like this can be exempted from the respect of all fourteen days if they are considered healthy, i.e. without being a risk to themselves or others. This certainly does not apply to footballers.”

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani was one of the first topflight players to test positive for Coronavirus, before five Sampdoria players and multiple Fiorentina players tested positive for the contagion. Despite the Italian government’s lockdown and guidelines for those who have been in contact with an infected person, the three Juventus stars still went to their native countries in order to spend the emergency with their families.

Lazio President Claudio Lotito Has Insisted The Squad Return To Training As Soon As Possible, A Decision Not Shared By Inter & Juve

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has insisted that the squad return to training at Formello as soon as possible, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how the Roman club have pushed back their return to training from the initial date of the 23rd March to the 26th, a delay of only three days, although there is a chance it could be pushed back by a further week.

The Lazio president’s intention is to ensure that his squad remain fully fit in order to fight for the league title, the report continues. Lotito wants to ensure that the players work in maximum safety, with preventive checks and dividing the squad into groups on the pitch. The Italian businessman’s decision wasn’t shared with other clubs, like Juventus and Inter, with AIC president Damiano Tommasi furious with the decision.

Lazio are eight points ahead of Inter in second place, although they have played one more game. The Biancocelesti are one point behind league leaders Juventus.
