Sporteconomy Editor Marcel Vulpis: “Suspending Financial Fair Play Is A Good Idea, It’s A Horrible Season Economically”

Italian journalist and editor of Sporteconomy Marcel Vulpis discussed the risk of collapse in the football world in an interview with Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb earlier today.

“For the minor leagues there will be a bad awakening after the coronavirus emergency is over. Deloitte has estimated a negative economic impact of €200 million even in the event of a restart of the league. It would go up to €720 million in case of cancellation of the league.”

He then discussed why there is a risk of collapse.

“The risk of collapse is strong because the costs are still running for football clubs while revenues have stopped. There is a need to restart but always within the protection of public health. There will be 75-80% of clubs that will go into the red so I expect big sales of valuable players from many clubs that will try to earn cash to try and end the season with a less heavy negative.”

Vulpis highlighted what could have been done differently to limit the negative impact of an emergency like the ongoing Coronavirus situation.

“It was a situation that no one could have predicted. If there hadn’t been the strong debt exposure of our system and if there had been more liquidity the clubs would probably have been able to solve this unique and unrepeatable situation better.”

The sports economy expert then spoke about the rumours that UEFA may suspend Financial Fair Play in order to help the clubs.

“I think it’s correct, it’s a horrible season from an economic point of view for all European countries. It is right that the system is saved and protected and that clubs are given the opportunity to restart with a little more strength because it is clear that if all the stakes of the PSF were applied many clubs would risk bankruptcy and, in many cases, be excluded from the European cups. UEFA’s position with respect to this initiative is correct.”

Finally, Vulpis discussed the problems Italian football are facing thanks to the Coronavirus emergency.

“Looking at the Italian system we are faced with a situation that is already indebted and the coronavirus emergency has brought into the system the so-called black swan, i.e. the very negative economic element that is impacting on the whole system.”

Serie A, like other top leagues around Europe, has been postponed until May at the earliest due to the Coronavirus emergency. The virus has caused the continent to go into a lockdown in order to try and limit the spread. Euro 2020 was postponed to next summer to allow the leagues to finish on time.

Valentino Lazaro: “Inter Are Special, I Love The Club With All My Heart, We’ll See What Happens In The Summer”

Inter owned midfielder Valentino Lazaro discussed football, his move and subsequent departure from Inter to Newcastle on loan and his personal life in an interview with Italian media outlet FcInterNews earlier today.

First, the 23-year-old Austrian discussed how he is doing now and what is occupying his time whilst in isolation.

“I’m home. I wake up and have breakfast, work out, read something. I study Italian and play the PlayStation with my friends.”

The former RB Salzburg midfielder then touched on the differences between the British and Italian governments’ response to Coronavirus.

“People in general must take this situation seriously and help reduce the number of new infections. Staying at home is helping a lot to prevent the spread of the virus, which helps doctors working day and night to keep this situation under control. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them.”

He thought it was correct to stop football for the time being.

“Yeah, absolutely. Stopping football and even any event with large crowds is necessary right now. Human health is worth more than anything else. That’s what matters most.”

Lazaro spoke about his adaptation problems whilst working under coach Antonio Conte.

“It’s just a little different with Newcastle. But, I also performed well with Inter. I love the club with all my heart, like the fans. The situation was difficult for me because of the injury I suffered, plus the fact that I didn’t speak the language, which also contributed. Sometimes it’s just a matter of psychology. I needed to play more to gain confidence again. I felt very good against Bologna, Dortmund and at the San Siro against Hellas Verona. I was in good shape and with renewed confidence, ready to take to the pitch, but then again, I didn’t play for many weeks, so it was difficult for me. In any case, I will never stop working on myself and I will continue to be ready for all the challenges I have to face in the future.”

He revealed that he still talks to many Inter players and Conte.

“Sure. I’m in touch with Conte and all the guys. I watch every game and talk to them. Especially with Romelu I feel a great connection. He’s like a big brother.”

The 23-year-old spoke about why he decided to join Newcastle in the January transfer window.

“It’s no secret that I had the opportunity to go to a top club in Germany, RB Leipzig, and play in the Champions League in a team where many of my friends play. But I wanted to try a new experience, something I hadn’t experienced yet. So, I chose to test myself in the Premier League.”

The Austrian discussed Conte’s reaction to his decision to join the English club.

“He respected my decision precisely because he knows England and thinks it might be a good step for me to play in the Premier League and have continuity. To go back to being what I’d shown in the past.”

He touched on his positive thoughts of Inter and a possible return in the summer.

“Inter are amazing, a fantastic and special club. Wearing the Nerazzurri jersey is a source of pride. But it wouldn’t be right to talk about it now. I’m focused on Newcastle and I’ll give my all here. Then next summer we’ll see what happens.”

He spoke about whether his price tag put pressure on him to perform.

“I wouldn’t say pressure, but I certainly know I should have provided certain services. In the end, it’s a professional business. I know my qualities and I will show everyone what I can really do.”

Finally, Lazaro discussed whether he thinks Inter can still win the league, once everything returns.

“Inter have quality and mentality. The coach and the staff to win, although obviously it’s not easy. I think it’s possible with hard work and concentration.”

Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho Could Be Included In Deal For Inter Striker Lautaro Martinez

Barcelona owned forward Philippe Coutinho could be included in the deal for Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Turin based newspaper Tuttosport.

The report details how the 27-year-old Brazilian, who is currently on loan with German giants Bayern Munich, could return to Inter in the summer if the Blaugrana decide to include him in a deal for Lautaro. The Blaugrana are incredibly keen to sign the 22-year-old Argentine striker and believe he would be the perfect replacement for the aging Luis Suarez.

Whilst Inter CEO Beppe Marotta would prefer Barcelona midfielder Arthur, the report continues, it is still a possible deal. Coutinho’s return to Inter would trigger a tactical change by coach Antonio Conte, as he would change the formation to a 3-4-2-1, putting the 27-year-old Brazilian alongside Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, behind Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku. The former Juventus and Italy coach had a similar set up at Chelsea, where he placed Eden Hazard and either Willian or Pedro behind Diego Costa.

Inter Considering Future Of Diego Godin As Hellas Verona’s Marash Kumbulla Continues To Tempt

Inter are considering the future of Uruguayan defender Diego Godin, following on from the player’s relatively muted impact under coach Antonio Conte, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The report details how the 34-year-old veteran defender, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, has only started alongside Stefan De Vrij and Milan Skriniar 11 times out of 25 so far this season. The player has struggled to adapt to Conte’s three-man defense and has often been pushed out of the starting lineup by 20-year-old Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni.

Both Godin and Inter are considering what to do in the summer, the report continues. Both Manchester United and Valencia are interested in him, with the Red Devils having attempted to sign him last summer before the Nerazzurri eventually secured his signature.

Inter are also following 20-year-old Hellas Verona defender Marash Kumbulla, the report adds. The player, who has impressed massively in his 19 appearances so far this season, is worth at least €20 million, and has experience in a three-man defense. The Nerazzurri may sign him as a replacement for Godin.

Serie A Clubs Including Inter Submit Proposals To Government To Save The Football System

Serie A clubs met yesterday to discuss the proposals to submit to the government to try to save the football system, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how the clubs send the Italian football federation their estimates of the damage caused by the Coronavirus emergency, whilst also proposing that players’ salaries be temporarily suspended. The clubs’ justification for this request is that the players are currently not training or playing and so the clubs would like a freeze on wages from the 8th March to whenever the players return to training again.

Work is being done to ensure that all clubs are on the same page, the report continues, to stop each president having to deal with the situation on their own. The proposal is likely to be questioned by Fifpro, the international representative of footballers. Other proposals the clubs made to the government concern the allowment of sports betting sponsorship, a modification of the law governing TV rights and a simplified process for clubs who want to build new stadiums.

Italian Report Highlights Two Strikers Inter Could Sign If They Sell Lautaro Martinez This Summer

A report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has highlighted two strikers Inter could potentially buy this summer should they sell Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez.

The report details how Spanish giants Barcelona are big fans of the 22-year-old Argentine striker, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023. Lautaro has made 31 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2437 minutes. In that time, he’s scored 16 goals and provided four assists, justifying the Blaugrana’s interest in him.

The first player that Inter could sign to replace Lautaro is 30-year-old Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The 30-year-old Gabonese striker’s contract expires with the Gunners at the end of next season and currently a renewal doesn’t look close. He has scored 20 goals in 32 games across all competitions this season.

The other player the Nerazzurri may look to is Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud, the report continues. The 33-year-old Frenchman’s contract expires with the Blues at the end of this season and could be signed on a free transfer. He was close to a move to Inter in the January transfer window, but the deal failed to materialise in time.

Juan Musso’s Agent: “It Would Be Irresponsible Of Me To Confirm Anything, Inter Are A Great European Team”

Juan Musso’s agent Vicente Montes has praised Inter and Inter’s current number one goalkeeper Samir Handanovic amid speculation which has seen his client linked with a move to the Nerazzurri club.

As per various reports, Inter have set their sights on bringing in Musso to initially act as Handanovic’s deputy and then become the team’s number one goalkeeper and Montes discussed the reported interest in an interview with CalcioMercato.com.

He was firstly asked if he thinks his client can be considered as one of the three best goalkeepers currently plying their trade in Serie A: “Without a doubt he is. Game after game since his arrival in Serie A he is proving to be a great goalkeeper.”

He was then asked if there has been any contact with Inter and what he thinks of Inter as a potential destination for Musso.

“Confirming something today would be irresponsible of me but there are several teams from various leagues that are following him closely.

“It is obvious that, with his age, with two seasons in Europe behind him, with an Italian passport, demonstrating quality and professionalism, as well as him being in Argentine national team, Musso is destined to become the goalkeeper of a great European team.

“Inter are a great European team, they have always had fantastic goalkeepers. Handanovic is the best goalkeeper in Serie A. Juan loves Handanovic, they are similar profiles.”

He then went on to reveal that some other clubs have come knocking in the past.

“When we decided to sign for Udinese we knew it was an ideal team for Juan to continue his progression. We have never considered changing teams but of some Serie A sporting directors have asked me about Juan.”

Montes was also asked if he thinks a valuation of €30 million is about right for his client.

“The value on the market is something so relative. If Kepa cost Chelsea €80 million, Courtois more or less the same amount and Donnarumma is worth €100 million, how much is Juan Musso worth? He would surely be a very important investment for a club who decided to do a deal with Udinese.”

UEFA Relax Financial Fair Play Rules Amid Ongoing Coronavirus Crisis

UEFA have agreed to relax Financial Fair Play rules by extending the deadline clubs have to prove that they have no overdue payables until the end of April according to a report from The Athletic.

European football’s governing body have taken this action in a bid to help clubs out during the current crisis situation which has come about as a result of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Leagues across the continent have been put on hold as governments try their utmost to contain the virus and stop it spreading any further but the decision to postpone leagues has had a huge financial impact on clubs who are still having to pay their players wages despite regular income such as gate receipts not coming in for the foreseeable future.

Clubs were originally supposed to have proven they have no overdue payables, such as unpaid tax bills, transfer instalments or wages, by the end of this month but have been given an extra 30 days to get things in order.
