Cesare Prandelli: “Inter Could Still Win The Serie A Title If The Season Resumes”

Former Italian national team manager Cesare Prandelli believes Inter stand a chance of overturning the current deficit they are at from top spot in the table if the season is to resume.

As things stand, Inter currently find themselves sat in third place with 54 points to their name after 25 games played. Lazio are in second with 62 points and reigning Italian champions Juventus are sitting top with 63 points but both Lazio and Juventus have in fact played a game more than Inter have.

“If the season hadn’t stopped, Lazio would really have had a chance to win the title. Inzaghi’s team was full of confidence but how will they start again? The same goes for Inter, who is slightly behind but can overturn the current standings.”

Prandelli, who last managed Genoa during the 2018/19 season, explained in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in today’s print edition.

Prandelli then went on to insist that whilst he still believes Juventus are the strongest of the three sides fighting for the title, the recent and ongoing stop brought about by the Coronavirus crisis could have a real impact on things.

“Sarri’s team is still the strongest and, consequently, they are still the favourite to win the Scudetto but these two months without training will have effects that are unpredictable. How will players react to this period without competitive football that is not even comparable to the summer break.”

He then spoke on the prospect of games having to be played without fans.

“What will it be like to play all the games in empty stadiums? Maybe with three games a week and with a hot summer? In short, it is a leap in the dark that can call into question both the title race and the battle to avoidrelegation. Teams that thought they were already safe will have to keep their eyes open.”

Inter & AC Milan In Favour Of Resuming Season Only If Health & Safety Can Be Guaranteed

Inter and AC Milan are both in favour of the 2019/20 Serie A season resuming if health and safety can be guaranteed according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

The season has been on hold for little over a month now due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic and there is growing optimism that clubs will be allowed to make a return to training – which will be heavily monitored and different from usual – from the beginning of next month.

The aim is then for the season to resume at the end of the month if not the start of June but it is ultimately too soon to determine whether this will be possible given the severity of the current crisis.

The report from the Rome based newspaper goes on to reveal that every Inter player barring one is back in Milan ahead of the possible resumption of training. Alexis Sanchez is expected to return in the coming days having been granted authorisation to return home.

Italian Sporting Minister Spadafora: “Not Certain That Training Will Resume On May 4th”

In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Rai 2 tonight, Vincenzo Spadafora, the Italian minister for sport and youth policies, has spoken about the possible resumption of the Serie A season.

The 2019/20 Serie A season has been on hold for just over a month now due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic and Spadafora, who has been in office since 2018, admits he cannot say for sure if training or the season itself will be able to resume.

“How can we restart? I start from the fact that sport is not only football and that football is not only Serie A, even if it is a big industry from an economic point of view,” he started.

“I will have a meeting on Wednesday with the FIGC who will show me the medical protocol which is mainly for training. Today I absolutely cannot say for certain whether the season will resume or if training will resume on May 4.”

Juventus, Parma and Roma have all reached agreements with their employees with regards to wage cuts and Spadafora was asked what he thinks the remaining 17 Serie A teams will opt to do.

“I don’t get involved in such things. The world of football, especially that of Serie A, is a world that lives very differently from the rest of sport and Italians.

“Each club is bargaining differently. I hope that the world of football can start again, but a restart date cannot be indicated if there are no certainties for the country.

“For now we know that from May 4 the world will gradually start to reopen, but the resumption of training does not mean automatic resumption of matches.

“I will evaluate the resumption of training very carefully and hope that it can resume, but resuming it does not mean that the season is automatically restarted too.”

In conclusion he was asked on the prospect of Serie A games being aired for free on television if the season does indeed resume with games being played behind closed doors without fans in attendance.

“I tried to do this in the period of maximum emergency, I had a heated confrontation with the CEO of Sky and the president of the Serie A League Dal Pino.

“The topic is thorny, when the world of football does not want to decide it says that it is the government that must do it, then when the government tries to decide football it wants to claim its autonomy. We will certainly consider this.”

Napoli Unwilling To Meet Inter Target Mertens Contract Demands

Napoli are unwilling to meet the new contract demands that Dries Mertens have according to a report from Italian news outlet FCInterNews.it.

Napoli have offered him a two year deal worth €4 million a season plus a €2 million signing on bonus but this offer falls short of Mertens’ demands with it understood he wants a three year deal, something Napoli are unwilling to give him.

Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco have meanwhile offered him a two year contract with an annual salary of €7 million but the former PSV Eindhoven player is not keen on a move to them.

The report goes on to add that Inter are very keen to land him on a free transfer and as soon as the lockdown ends, the Nerazzurri club will make what is described as a decisive lunge to sign the 32-year-old.

This season Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored 12 goals and tallied six assists.
