FIGC President Gravina: “We Hope To Start Again By The End Of May But For Now We Must Comply With The Provisions Of The World Health Organisation”

In an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia earlier on today, Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina has spoken on a range of topics relating to the current situation.

“Football has once again shown sensitivity in trying to be close to its fans, sending messages of solidarity to those who are suffering,” he said.

“Some projects such as ‘the rules of the game’ and some campaigns launched by the 2006 world champions demonstrate this.

“The Italian football federation has also made Coverciano available to firefighters and nurses. We are 100% available to help out.”

He then went on to insist that now is time for unity not division given the current situation.

“Football has found unity of purpose in recognising the centrality of the FIGC, something that has not happened for some time.

“Today is the time to leave behind the controversy and time to be close to those who work on the front line, who my heart goes out to.”

Next he was asked if there are any dates that have been decided for when the Italian football season could potentially resume.

“FIFA has already organised a task force for the extension of contracts beyond June 30. That is still the deadline, we are pending communications from UEFA and FIFA to find a solution that will save the season. We hope to start again by the end of May but for now we must comply with the provisions of the World Health Organisation.”

He was then asked what would happen if the season cannot be concluded by June 30 as European football’s governing body want.

“If we cannot finish by then we will have to reflect on things. I’ve not thought about it much as I’m partially optimistic that we can finish the season by then.

“What will happen with the title if the season does not finish? We will talk about it with the Federal Council on the basis of article 13 of our statute but I like to think that this season will end.

“Some think that Italian football fans only live for the title to be awarded but that is not the case. Places in European competitions need to be decided as does relegation and promotion.”

He then stressed that he would like to see changes made to the rules.

“We ask the world of football for an innovative model. We are not asking for money, but for some rules to be revisited. This does not only just go for football but for all sport. The fundamental sports law is 40 years old. There is a need for modernisation.”

“The betting rules and new stadium rules are ones we are working on but there are others. I also care a lot about copyright.”

Next Gravina went on to discuss the potential economic losses that Italian football could incur as a result of this situation.

“The figures circulating in these days I consider particularly high and beyond any reasonable logic. It is evident, and I underline it that the world of football is experiencing an economic emergency in all countries.”

He was then asked about the possibility of there being 22 teams in Serie A next season.

“There are many ideas being thrown about. It is not easy to change formats because there are special needs such as starting later compared to normal. Serie A would appear schizophrenic at 22 teams, it is a slightly feasible hypothesis.”

Gravina then shared his point of view when it comes to when training can resume.

“There are doctors and specialists who have knowledge of the subject. We must rely on them and I will say that in the meetings.”

In conclusion he spoke on what he has made of several Serie A clubs granting their foreign players permission to return to their native homelands in the past few days.

“I have let the clubs manage things. Players are just like us and they need to feel protected to.”

Inter Linked Acerbi Could Be Given New Contract By Lazio

Francesco Acerbi could be handed a new and improved contract by Lazio as a reward for his performances this season according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

The experienced defender has had one of, if not, the best seasons of his playing career this term for the Serie A title chasing Biancocelesti club and this has led to some clubs developing an interest in signing him.

Acerbi currently earns €1.8 million a season and the report from the Milan based news outlet goes on to state that Lazio could give him a new deal that would come with an annual salary of €2.5 million.

Serie A Clubs Focused On Dealing With Economic Backlash Of Coronavirus Pandemic

Serie A clubs are more focused on dealing with the financial blow the whole current situation has brought about rather than focusing on a possible date the season could resume according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

Reports in the media in the past few days have suggested that there could be a loss as great as €800 million amongst Serie A clubs if the season does not finish and clubs and Lega Serie A are understandably worried about this prospect.

Some Serie A clubs have as many as 13 games left of their 2019/20 season and with at least three weeks of training required to get players back into shape, finding a suitable date to resume the season and have it finished as soon as possible to not disrupt the 2020/21 season too much will be very difficult.

There is currently a split amongst the clubs with some adamant that they want the season to be concluded whilst other clubs are of the belief that there will be no more of the 2019/20 season played due to the unprecedented situation.

Inter Among Clubs Of The Belief 19/20 Season Is Finished & No More Of It Will Be Played

Inter are one of a number of clubs who hold the view that the 2019/20 Serie A season is over and will not be resumed at any point according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

Reports in recent days have spoken about a split amongst the 20 Serie A clubs but up until now it was unclear which side of the divide Inter and a number of other clubs were on.

Napoli and Lazio are strongly for concluding the remainder of the season no matter how long it will take whilst Sampdoria are strongly against this and consider the season done.

Inter are also part of the group of teams who believe there will be no more football played alongside Genoa, Brescia, Udinese and Torino.

The report from the Rome based newspaper goes on to state that as things stand Juventus, AC Milan, Bologna and Sassuolo are not for or against either option.

Everton Join Inter In Being Interested In Atletico Madrid’s Arias

Inter face competition from Everton for the signature of Atletico Madrid’s Santiago Arias according to a report from Colombian broadcaster Antena2.

The Colombian full back is understood to be considering his future in the Spanish capital with things not having gone as planned for him in the two years since his arrival at the club from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in an €11 million deal.

Inter have been linked with him in Italian and Spanish media as of late with it understood that Inter have identified him as a player who could bolster their full back department.

Everton have now also sparked an interest in signing him and it is not the first time that Carlo Ancelotti has courted the 28-year-old either as Ancelotti also showed an interest in Arias whilst he was in charge at Napoli.

This season Arias has made 11 appearances across all competitions, in which he has provided a single assist for teammates.

Fiorentina Join Inter In Being Interested In Gianluca Busio

Fiorentina have sparked an interest in signing Sporting Kansas City starlet Gianluca Busio according to a report from Florence based newspaper La Nazione.

The 17-year-old sensation broke through at the MLS franchise in 2018 with him barely 16-years-old at the time and he is widely regarded as one of the league’s most promising looking players.

Busio is a United States international at under 17 level and he also has dual American-Italian citizenship due to his father being from Brescia thus meaning he would not count as a non-EU player in Serie A.

Fiorentina are not the first Serie A club to have shown an interest in the central midfielder with Inter also having shown an interest in signing him too in recent weeks.

The report from La Nazione goes on to state that Busio could cost interested clubs €4 million.

Busio has played in each of Sporting Kansas City’s games this season to date but he has been unable to make any goal contributions.

Inter Not Interested In Doing Perisic & Tolisso Swap With Bayern Munich

Inter are not interested in doing a swap deal with Bayern Munich involving Ivan Perisic and Corentin Tolisso according to a report from FCInterNews.it.

Croatian national team winger Perisic is currently out on loan at the Bundesliga club and they have an option to buy him but rather than pay it, they would seemingly be keen on doing a deal with Inter that would see the players swapped.

However, with Perisic valued at €20 million and Tolisso valued at €30 million, Inter would likely have to add a sum of cash to even things out.

Inter, as per the report, would not be keen on this idea as they would like to sell Perisic to help raise funds for the Summer transfer window.

Moreover, the report states that Inter are not keen on Tolisso at the moment and he is not one of their priorities, mainly because Antonio Conte does not want him.

Inter Willing To Pay €11m For Atletico Madrid’s Arias In The Summer

Inter are willing to pay €11 million to Atletico Madrid’s for Santiago Arias according to a report from Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

Inter are looking to bolster their full back department in the upcoming Summer transfer window and have identified the Colombian national team player as a player who could do just that.

Arias joined the Wanda Metropolitano club two seasons ago from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven but has not lived up to expectations and as per the report he would not be opposed to leaving the Spanish capital given things have not went as hoped.

Inter had in fact showed an interested in landing Arias back in the January transfer window but no deal materialised between the clubs but things could be different come the Summer.

This season Arias has made 11 appearances across all competitions to date. In just under 900 minutes in total on the park, Arias has provided his Rojiblancos teammates with a single assist.
