With the Azzurri, I have experienced a beautiful moment when Conte made me a part of the squad at the European Championships. He brought the team to life and we had a lot of fun before losing on penalties to Germany. After the change of manager we had some tough times, but sometimes that happens in sport. Now there is a new generation. We have a coach who has won in his career and shown that he can do well with big team. He called Balotelli, but from Inter there was only D’Ambrosio.”

Finally, the player was asked whether he would every consider playing for Cagliari in the future. “The Rossoblu are a team that I respect a lot. They have always been difficult to beat. I remember players like Langella, Esposito and Suazo – I faced them when I was at Empoli. You never know what will happen in football and the market, so why not?”
