Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti has both agreed and disagreed with current Italian national team manager Roberto Mancini’s calls for Italian clubs to start bedding in young Italian talent over foreign players in order to benefit the national team going forward.
“After failing to qualify for the World Cup, it is certainly necessary to work to improve young Italians in the national team. Mancini is certainly the right person for that,” Zanetti agreed before going on to add – and disagree, “In the league though, regardless of nationality, I think talent must be rewarded. Basically, whoever is the best should be playing.
Despite being Argentine, Zanetti revealed the joy it gives him seeing a young Italian player on the pitch.
“The Italian national team needs to start again and needs the best young players. Everyone is happy when there are good Italian players on the pitch, it reflects well on a club’s youth system.”
