Materazzi: “Inter Missing A Spark & 2-3 Top Purchases To Challenge For Scudetto”

Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi recalled the famous semi-final second leg performance against Barcelona on the Nerazzurri’s way to winning the Champions League back in the 2009/10 season.

“We were a team that was willing to do anything to succeed and we proved it. After Thiago Motta’s sending off, Mourinho changed the match and told us: “Guys, in training you always defend 6 against 4, or 7 against 4. Here we are 10 against 11, they can not score a goal. In the end they only got one at the end and it was through a defender. To pull that off it takes a lot of awareness of your own resources,” Materazzi explained in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

Materazzi proceeded to speak on the importance of having a “captivating player” within your squad.

“Tottenham has changed a little since the last meeting, while Barça has a lot and of course still have Messi, but Spalletti has Nainggolan. He is a captivating player, one who knows how to convey something to the team.”

The ex-Italian internatinoal then spoke on Inter’s poor start to the campaign.

“After playing so well in the first half, you can not fail to win like they did against Torino. The standard at the San Siro must be that of the first 45 minutes. With the crowd that there it is easy to play. Inter fans are the least demanding fans in Italy. Find me another supporters base that always appears in those numbers regardless of the results.”

Materazzi then spoke on the potential partnership of Mauro Icardi and Lautaro Martinez as well as the defence.

“Certainly, Spalletti tried them together all summer and will not just abandon them after one bad game.

“Skriniar can and must play. His aggression reminds me of Walter Samuel’s, but he should take on more responsibility during the build=up phase. He’s not the player who arrived a year ago and he is a leader and a leader must also know how to take risks in the game. As for De Vrij, I like him. He is better in a three-way defence, and like me, the Dutchman is good at setting up from the back.”

He concluded by revealing when he thinks Inter can really challenge for the Scudetto.

“I think that in two years we will be there. For the time being a spark is missing as are 2-3 top purchases.”
