With January transfer rumours already beginning to surface, Corriere dello Sport have taken the opportunity to remind fans around the world of one of the big changes to the Champions League and Europa League.
Previously the second a player played a second for any one club in European competition he was cup tied and should he move on during the transfer window, he would be unable to play for his new club in the European competition. However, new for this season, clubs can sign and utilise players even if they have played for someone else. There are limitations however and club can only register three new players in the window.
With this new rule in place, increased transfer activity in the January transfer window is to be expected and teams signing players from their potential opponents to weaken them can not be ruled out either.
The Rome based newspaper use the example of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric as an example. The Croatian has drawn strong interest from Inter and could join the Nerazzurri in January and given both clubs progress through the group stage, Modric could in fact end up facing his former employers in the competition.
