Bergomi: “Inter Can Compete In Serie A & In Europe This Season”

Beppe Bergomi believes Inter have enough squad depth to compete both domestically and in Europe this season and has dismissed Francesco Totti’s claim that the title race in Italy is a foregone conclusion.

Totti told Roma Radio on Wednesday that Juventus are in a different league to their nearest competitors in Serie A and cannot be challenged for the Scudetto this season, but Bergomi remains convinced that the Bianconeri will be given a run for their money and has nominated Luciano Spalletti’s side as one of their antagonists.

“I don’t agree with Totti on this occasion,” the former Inter and Italy defender wrote in his Gazzetta dello Sport column on Friday. “I don’t think this season’s title race is a foregone conclusion at all.

“Never have Juventus’s closest rivals strengthened like they have this summer. The first team I think of is Milan: they already had a strong team that was well-structured and now they have added [Gonzalo] Higuain. In terms of the quality of football they’re the team I’ve liked the most during these first few games.

“Inter have built a physical team with good squad depth, which will enable them to be competitive both in Italy and in Europe. Napoli are the same team as last year, changing their head coach, while Roma have made the most changes and are struggling to find the right balance.

“All of these teams, though – and I would add Lazio to that list too, as they’re a side I’ve always liked a lot – will give Juventus a run for their money this season. They won’t just be fighting for second place.”
