Inter’s fortunes in this season’s UEFA Champions League will depend heavily on the performances of Marcelo Brozovic in midfield, as Corriere dello Sport outlined on Friday.
The Nerazzurri were drawn into a tough-looking Group B last week alongside Barcelona, Tottenham and PSV Eindhoven and will be unable to count upon either Roberto Gagliardini or Joao Mario due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, ensuring that the burden is well and truly on the Croatian’s shoulders to hold the fort in the centre of the park.
“Brozovic has not played in the ‘real’ Champions League since the autumn of 2012, when he was playing for Dinamo Zagreb: since then he’s only featured in the preliminary rounds.
“Having followed the player for a while already, Inter were definitively convinced by Brozovic during an Italy-Croatia game that took place at San Siro in November 2014.
“In that match he was playing in midfield alongside… Luka Modric: had he arrived from Real Madrid this summer the pair would have come full circle.
“During the group stage the Croatian will twice face Arturo Vidal, when Inter play Barcelona. The two of them could have been playing together in midfield this season, when it looked as if the Nerazzurri would finalise a deal for the Chilean to join from Bayern Munich.
“Ultimately, Vidal moved to Barcelona at the start of August instead. To the disappointment of those who had hoped he would arrive in Milan.”
