Improved fitness levels and effective squad rotation are among the key explanations for Inter’s five-game winning run, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Nerazzurri’s campaign has been turned on its head since the 1-0 defeat at home to Parma on 16 September, with consecutive victories over Tottenham, Sampdoria, Fiorentina, Cagliari and PSV Eindhoven distancing them from their early-season crisis.
And the Milan-based publication believe there are five principal reasons for this upturn in form – one for each win they have notched up during the last three weeks.
One of the reasons cited for the turnaround is improved performances from Inter’s key players.
“If and when Inter make it out of their Champions League group,” they write, “everyone will pinpoint Mauro Icardi’s wonder-goal against Tottenham as the moment their European destiny changed.
“Radja Nainggolan is the face of this team at the moment, but Spalletti has also had important responses from Marcelo Brozovic, whose goal against Sampdoria enabled them to build on the win over Tottenham.”
However Gazzetta also write that Spalletti’s decision to choose one system and stick with it (4-2-3-1) has been crucial, praising him for “picking the system the team knows best.”
The comeback successes against Spurs and PSV, along with the ability to soak up pressure and score at the right moment against Fiorentina, are said to be proof of Inter’s emboldened character on the pitch, while Spalletti’s careful squad rotation since the September international break is described as “the shortcut which has allowed him to increase the group’s self-esteem.”
Finally, the team’s improving fitness levels are highlighted as a key factor in Inter’s recent results, with Nainggolan taken as a specific example.
“Whereas last year Inter could afford to start like a house on fire, this year they had to be more cautious with their physical preparation,” they write.
“What’s for certain is that at the start of October, Inter are what people had said they would be before the start of the season. They still have time to dream big.”
