Samir Handanovic is partially responsible for five of the six points Inter have amassed during their first two Champions League games of the season, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Slovenian was at the centre of attention during the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 win over PSV on Wednesday after avoiding a red card in the first half, which drew him criticism from portions of the Dutch press the following morning.
However his contribution to the cause in Europe so far this season has been immense, thanks to a serious of miraculous saves in midweek and against Tottenham on match-day 1, when Inter had flirted on numerous occasions with a two-goal deficit.
“Everyone was talking about him in Eindhoven on Wednesday,” the Milanese publication wrote on Friday.
“The Dutch supporters were frustrated he hadn’t been sent off and were booing him every time he touched the ball, as if it had been his decision to only award him a yellow card.
“Then, all of a sudden, everyone fell silent: it was the 79th minute and the Slovenian dived to his left to pull off an incredible stop. His left hand somehow reached Donyell Malen’s acrobatic effort – a world-class save which made up for that moment of poor decision-making in the first half.
“Ultimately he is partially responsible for at least five of the six points Inter have amassed in the Champions League. Against Tottenham, before the remarkable comeback, Handanovic had kept them in the game with three saves to deny Erik Lamela.”
