Inter Midfielder Joao Mario: “I Had To Be Patient For My Chance, It Was Hard To Not Play Often”

In an interview with DAZN, Inter midfielder Joao Mario has reflected on his recent positive spell and discussed the period where he was completely frozen out.

“Every so often, at the end of the games, I thought that at least I had given everything on the field even if it had not gone very well from a technical point of view,” he said. “I saw that people were angry with my behaviour and I had to review things a bit in order to get better.

“A year ago I did not think it could have been like this where I was stating regularly. I had to be patient and in the past I was very worried about what I could not control. One thing I have learned is that even if you work to the maximum there is some things that you still can not control, you have to be calm because sooner or later the opportunity comes. It was hard to not play often but it makes you mature.”

He then spoke on his surprise at being selected for Inter’s match away to Lazio which was the first game in this ‘re-birth’ period he is experiencing.

“I did not expect to play as it was a difficult match away from home. I had the opportunity and I knew I had to give everything to have continuity. Spalletti tries to help everyone on the psychological side.”

He concluded by speaking on his exclusion from Inter’s Champions League squad list.

“I already knew that I could not play because of Financial Fair Play. In the group we faced two very strong teams but we did not manage to get through.”
