Italian sports journalist Ivan Zazzaroni gave his thoughts on that penalty decision from last nights game between Fiorentina and Inter.
Fiorentina were awarded a penalty deep into injury time for a handball by Danilo D’Ambrosio in the box. After consultation with VAR and viewing many replays referee Rosario Abisso decided to confirm his decision to award the penalty even though the replays appeared to show that the ball hit the defenders chest and not his arm.
Zazzaroni didn’t hold back with his summation of the what he thought happened and said “In the world of football without VAR Inter wouldn’t have been awarded a penalty and they would have conceded a goal by Biraghi which was initially awarded by Abisso. These correction were rightfully made. In the world of football with VAR in the 101st minute of the game fear and the referees compensation came into play: a non existent penalty was awarded. Is this better?”
Zazzaroni went on to explain “when I say compensation I mean the referee was terrified to correct a decision for the third time against one team only. The home side. He was fragile. My personal opinion? He bottled it!”
