Inter manager Luciano Spalletti reflected on Inter’s far from pretty 2-0 victory over SPAL at San Siro this afternoon.
Goals from Matteo Politano and Roberto Gagliardini secured the victory for the absence hit Inter side and Spalletti first spoke on the number of absences.
“There were still 11 Inter players and we should’ve done better. We allowed the tension to strangle us, as it sometimes does, and we lose sight of our qualities, become too timid and insecure. Quality is most important and the ability to show quality must not be confused by fear and shyness.”
Next he spoke on the need for character at Inter.
“Players need to be aware of what jersey they are playing for and that they need to win games. These emotions have to be inside every player. We have this fire inside of us, a fire that sometimes become a flame and everything gets difficult.
“For example, Gagliardini, after the goal he became a totally different player. And also the other players shifted gear. We become shy because we get emotional, but fear is something else. I know these players very well, because I see them every day. Take Dalbert as an example, he will become a great football player one day, you can take that to the bank.”
Spalletti was then asked about Mauro Icardi who missed yet another game but was not keen to speak on length about him.
“I don’t want to talk about Icardi. We have an objective and that is to bring home victories and you cannot do that by entering the pitch holding each others arms, but with the desire to bring home the result.
“Otherwise it becomes difficult to remaining as an Inter player. It is only the victories that determine that you are an Inter player, if you don’t get the win everything becomes more difficult.
“The common goal has to be assumed by everyone. I don’t talk about him, if you want to hear me out I can talk about Politano’s goal. Both him and Gagliardini scored great goals today and Lautaro showed a great character. Today I was only looking at my team.”
He concluded by insisting that there was no fall out pre-match.
“Today before the match I didn’t end up in any argument, a gentleman told me that only Inter counts and I told him: ‘Good, Forza Inter.’
“It is only Inter that counts and Inter is at the centre of our thoughts.”
