Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has defended Inter manager Luciano Spalletti’s decision to not call Mauro Icardi up for tonight’s loss to Lazio.
Icardi returned to full training at the start of last week and many expected him to be called up but when he wasn’t, his lawyer Paolo Nicoletti, who has acted as a mediator between him and the club, spoke out against the club for not alerting him that the 26-year-old wouldn’t be called up.
“I respect Nicoletti a great deal for his professionalism, but you cannot expect a lawyer to know who is called up to a match before anyone else. That’s fantasy football,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.
“Icardi is being brought back in gradually. It’s a very difficult role, but the Coach has the right to choose his collaborators, the players to put on the field and the players to call up for every match.
Marotta concluded: “Nobody can complain about Spalletti, as he acted for the good of the club.”
