Antonio Conte: “I Chose Inter Because They Matched My Ambitions”

Antonio Conte says Inter’s ambition to win was the main reason he agreed to become the club’s new head coach.

Conte was officially announced as Luciano Spalletti’s replacement this morning and will attend Saturday’s Champions League final alongside CEO Beppe Marotta and sporting director Piero Ausilio.

The former Chelsea boss spoke to the BBC before leaving for Madrid and explained what had convinced him to join the Nerazzurri.

“Inter have a big history and at the moment they have the same ambition as me to win things,” Conte said.

“That’s why I decided to come here. It’s a new challenge, a new chapter in my life.

“I won a lot of trophies with Juventus and I’d like to do the same here. We have to respect Inter’s history and and take the club back to its former glories.”

Conte, who has signed a three-year contract, was then asked how Inter would deal with Mauro Icardi this summer following reports the striker was not part of the Italian’s plans for next season.

“We’ll look at every situation and we’ll take the decisions which are best for the club,” he assured.

“We’ll work very hard to take the best decisions because the club is the most important thing both now and heading forward.”

Conte also remained tight-lipped on rumours linking Inter with a move for Manchester United outcast Romelu Lukaku.

“It’s difficult to talk about this,” he said.

“What’s for sure is we have a plan to improve the team. The important thing though is to have the ambition to close the gap [to Juventus].

“If I were to summarise the challenge which awaits us at Inter I would use these words: hard work and ambition.”
