Luciano Spalletti was told he would be sacked by Inter via a phone call from the club’s CEO Beppe Marotta on Thursday morning, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Spalletti officially lost his job as the Nerazzurri’s head coach yesterday after months of speculation surrounding Antonio Conte, who was announced as his replacement today.
The Italian was in Tuscany on Wednesday to attend his brother’s funeral and was still there when Marotta called to inform him of the club’s decision.
Inter also sent confirmation via email before revealing the news to the club’s supporters on social media, which was followed by a heartfelt post from president Steven Zhang.
Samir Handanovic, Andrea Ranocchia and Stefan De Vrij are the only three players to have dedicated Spalletti a message so far, reflecting the tense atmosphere which had engulfed the Inter dressing room during the second half of the season.
Spalletti finished fourth in both seasons at Inter, securing the club’s return to the UEFA Champions League after six seasons in exile.
