Napoli will make a serious attempt to sign Mauro Icardi this summer but the Inter striker is unlikely to accept a move, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Icardi represents the ‘dream’ signing for Carlo Ancelotti as he seeks a centre-forward with his qualities to complement Arkadiusz Milik.
The Argentine would need to be persuaded to leave Inter, though, and in any case his current preference were he to move is Juventus.
“Napoli will have a go at signing Icardi but it’s not a simple deal to pull off,” Gazzetta reported this morning.
“Inter would like either Piotr Zielinski or Fabian Ruiz as part of a deal but Aurelio De Laurentiis has already said neither are for sale.
“There wouldn’t be any problems economically speaking because Napoli would be willing to offer Icardi the €7 million per season he wants, plus a series of add-ons helping him to earn another €2 million.
“De Laurentiis is ready to invest €60-70 million to sign Icardi, but the player’s desire or otherwise to join Napoli is probably the most significant factor.”
Napoli already made an approach for Icardi in 2016 but the forward ultimately opted to stay at Inter.
“We’re only at the start of the market, in any case, so nothing will stop Napoli from hoping their dream can eventually come true,” the paper concluded.
