Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio met with Romelu Lukaku’s agent to agree personal terms with the forward, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Lukaku has agreed to cut his wages – which will in any case decrease by 25% if he stays at Manchester United, given their failure to qualify for the Champions League – in order to join the Nerazzurri.
However, United remain in a strong position as the Belgian has three years left on his contract, meaning they are still asking for €70 million.
Inter cannot afford to meet the Red Devils’ asking price and hope to arrange a swap deal with Ivan Perisic or Mauro Icardi, but United would only want Milan Skriniar in such a deal.
United have removed Lukaku from all the club’s promotional content ahead of the 2019-20 season, confirming their desire to move the striker on this summer.
Inter will be able to sign Lukaku if they can sell Icardi for cash, whereas a move to Juventus would most likely result in the Nerazzurri signing Paulo Dybala instead.
Icardi wants to stay at Inter despite all evidence suggesting he has no future at the club, leading Antonio Conte to consider excluding him from their preseason training camp in Lugano if he sticks around.
Inter’s legal team are also studying a ‘solution’ which does not give the 26-year-old a chance to be released from his contract, but the paper did not specify more.
